Foxn1 and CD205 (DEC205) are novel thymic epithelial markers that are important for thymic organogenesis and the positive selection process for thymocytes, respectively. These markers were immunohistochemically applied to a total of 77 cases of thymic epithelial neoplasms comprised of 58 cases of thymomas, 17 cases of thymic carcinomas, and 2 cases of thymic neuroendocrine carcinomas. Foxn1 was diffusely expressed in nuclear staining in all cases of type B thymoma and all but 1 case of type A thymoma, whereas the expression was generally focal in thymic carcinoma (76%). The expression was iden

Thymolipoma is a rare benign tumor of the anterior mediastinum. Only a few reports describing thymoma arising within a thymolipoma have been documented in the literature. We report herein a detailed description of thymolipoma giving rise to 2 thymomas of different histological subtypes. A 74-year-old male with history of metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma gradually developed 2 soft tissue nodules within a large right hemithorax fatty mass that was present for the past 20 years. Computed tomography (CT)-guided needle biopsy revealed one of the soft tissue nodules to be a thymoma, and the en

90% of all thymomas are localized in the anterior-superior mediastinum, seldom in the inferior or posterior mediastinum. We report the rare case of a 61 year-old female patient who presented with a large thymoma of the anterior-inferior mediastinum with the chief complaint of position-dependent dyspnoea secondary to compression of the left lung. Surgical resection of a tumor weighing 1053 g was successfully performed and 8 months postoperatively the patients is asymptomatic and without evidence of recurrence.

Thymic hyperplasia is a rare condition generally caused by lymphoid follicular hyperplasia associated with autoimmune disorders. True thymic parenchymal hyperplasia unassociated with lymphoid follicular hyperplasia is extremely rare and may give rise to difficulties in diagnosis. We have studied 44 patients with true thymic hyperplasia (38 females and 6 males) aged 7 months to 64 years (mean, 36 years). Eighteen patients presented with symptoms of chest discomfort or shortness of breath; in 20 patients, the lesions were discovered incidentally. Imaging studies demonstrated enlargement of the m

A 26-year-old man presented with shortness of breath on exertion that was gradually getting worse. His history revealed a mass in the left hemithorax that had been growing on follow-ups. Physical examination only showed that the respiratory sounds were fainter on the left. Thoracic computerized tomography was performed to elucidate the left hemithorax lesion seen on chest x-ray and a giant mass of lipid density extending from the anterior mediastinum to the diaphragm and filling almost the entire left hemithorax was observed. Total excision of the 25 × 21 × 8 cm mass weighing 1580 g was perfor

Ectopic cervical thymoma is a rare tumour that probably arises from thymic tissue trapped during the migration of the thymus into the anterior mediastinum from the third and fourth pharyngeal pouches. As it occurs in the region of the thyroid gland it mimics thyroid lesions and can cause confusion to the clinician, sonologist and cytologist. Misinterpretation of frozen sections can also occur if knowledge of this entity is not present. We are reporting a case of this rare entity in an elderly lady who presented with a neck mass that mimicked a thyroid lesion. Ectopic cervical thymoma should be

We report herein the case of a 77-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital for further evaluation of an abnormal shadow in the right upper mediastinum that had been revealed by a routine chest X-ray. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans confirmed the presence of a thymic tumor, but did not show any evidence of invasion into the central vessels or adjacent structures. Thus, an extended thymectomy with resection of the tumor was performed. Microscopically, normal thymic tissue was found among the tumor cells, and a pathological diagnosis of well-differentiat

The paper presents detailed morphological characteristics of 31 thymomas and 25 microscopically similar neoplasias of the anterior mediastinum (carcinoid, seminoma, lymphogranulomatosis, angiofollicular lymphoma, etc). The term "thymoma" is determined as a tumour consisting of two components: mandatory epithelial one and lymphocytes. The diversity of the morphological picture of thymomas is determined mainly by the variability of the epithelial component. The special features of the ultrastructural organization of thymomas (the presence of desmosomes, tonofibrils and basal membrane) were revea

Radiologic findings in the thymoma-hypogammaglobulinemia syndrome are encountered in three stages reflecting the natural history of the syndrome. Initially, a mediastinal mass is apparent on chest x-ray in an asymptomataic patient. At this stage a failing immune system has apparently induced compensatory thymic hyperplasia which progresses to frank neoplasia. In 55% of the cases this thymic tumor is paracardiac in location. With progressive failure of immunoglobulin production, acute and chronic pulmonary infiltrates occur secondary to infection. Markedly, decreased IgA in the bowel may eventu

CONTEXT: -Numerous histomorphologic and staging classifications of thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) have been proposed during the last century, suggesting that the classification of these tumors is challenging and controversial. Difficulties of classifying TETs include various combinations of epithelial cells and lymphocytes and the paucity of these tumors. The prognostic significance, specifically of the histomorphologic classifications, has been debated. Early classifications were also challenged by the uncertainty of the neoplastic component(s) of the tumor.
OBJECTIVE: -To discuss the evolu

Although thymomas are rare neoplasms, they are the most common tumor of the anterior mediastinum in adults. Preferred therapy for these neoplasms is complete surgical resection. If a thymoma cannot be completely resected, postoperative radiotherapy may produce satisfactory results in controlling the tumor. Significant 5- and 10-year survival rates have been recorded for patients with advanced thymomas who have been treated by radiation therapy alone. Chemotherapy may be used in patients with unresectable thymomas as well, but the results are less promising than with radiotherapy. Combinations

Thymic epithelial tumour (TET) histologic subclassification has not been well described in the veterinary literature as it has in humans. The objective of this study was to identify and describe TET subtypes in dogs and to determine the utility of immunohistochemistry (IHC) in differentiating these subtypes. Samples were reviewed and classified according to a modified World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for human tumours of thymic origin. Signallment, presenting signs, treatment and survival data was collected from medical records. Histologic review confirmed the same subtypes as describe

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs), comprising thymomas, thymic carcinomas, and thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms, are rare prevascular (anterior) mediastinal malignancies characterized by histologic and clinical heterogeneity. Their management is complex because of overlapping pathologic features, variable clinical behavior, frequent associations with autoimmune conditions, and lack of standardized therapeutic algorithms. This review addresses current challenges across the diagnosis, management, and treatment of TETs. We outline diagnostic difficulties, including distinguishing TETs from histologi

Objective: Intrathyroid thymic carcinoma(ITTC) is a rare thyroid tumor that lacks typical clinical manifestations and imaging features, making preoperative diagnosis challenging. The primary treatment for ITTC is radical surgery; however, the effectiveness of adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy post-surgery is not well-established. This paper presents a case of ITTC , analyzing the clinical data and correlating it with the literature to explore the clinical manifestations, diagnostic approach, treatment, and prognosis of ITTC.

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are a relatively rare type of thoracic tumor, accounting for less than 1% of all tumors. The incidence of TETs is about 3.93/10000 in China, slightly higher than that of European and American countries. For resectable TETs, complete surgical resection is recommended. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be used as postoperative adjuvant treatment. Treatment for advanced, unresectable TETs consist mainly of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but there is a lack of standard first- and second-line treatment regimens. Recently, targeted therapies and immune checkpoint inhib
