Optokinetic nystagmus with spontaneous reversal of transparent motion perception.

When two visual patterns moving in opposite directions are superimposed, they appear to be at different depths and to slide over each other. Because the stimulus does not specify the depth-order between the surfaces, this transparent motion perception is essentially ambiguous. With prolonged observation, the perceived depth-order of the two moving surfaces reverses spontaneously. In the present study, the correlation between the perceived direction of transparent motion and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) was examined. While viewing superimposed random-dot patterns moving in opposite horizontal or

Visual processing of the motion of an object in three dimensions for a stationary or a moving observer.

A rate of change of relatively disparity is a sufficient binocular stimulus for the perception of motion in depth. For motion within the meridian that contains the eyes, disparity change associated with approaching motion is processed through four channels, each tuned to a different direction of motion in depth. Directional discrimination is most acute but detection sensitivity falls to a minimum for a trajectory passing approximately midway between the eyes. This can be explained if discrimination depends on the relatively of the four channels. Two binocular retinal-image correlates of the di

Studies on visual perception of locomotion.

The problem about visual discrimination between seeing objects in motion and perception of motion of the perceiver (locomotion) was taken up. A flow of vertical motion was presented to limited areas of the far periphery (45 degrees-90 degrees) of the retina simultaneously with optical information about a stationary room over the rest of the retina. The result was that most subjects perceived themselves as sitting in an elevator continuously moving upward or downward. Thus, peripheral motion stimulation over a few percent of the retinal area determines locomotion perception in apparent competit

Reaction time as a diagnostic measure in senility.

Both simple and disjunctive reaction times (RT) are known to slow with aging but there is a paucity of information on RT changes in senility. Since disjunctive RT involves cognition in addition to the sensory-motor speed and attentional components of simple RT, it was hypothesized that disjunctive RT would be a reliable index of age-related mental decline. To test this prediction, simple and disjunctive RT were measured in matched groups of 20 normal and 20 cognitively impaired elderly. Simple RT was slower in the senile patients than in the normal subjects, but this difference was accounted f

Fetal movements are related to maternal characteristics: a prospective ultrasound study.

BACKGROUND: Fetal movements are important indicators of well-being that are associated with stillbirth. Yet neither a universal definition nor gold standard exists for what constitutes normal or abnormal. Current monitoring methods such as maternal perception lack diagnostic accuracy, while ultrasound provides detailed assessment in real time that is not practical outside the clinic setting. Maternal perception remains the primary method of fetal movements detection in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: To assess normal fetal movements patterns using real-time ultrasound and maternal perception a

The influence of various factors on the performance of repetition tests in adults with cochlear implants.

A variety of internal and external factors influence speech perception performance following cochlear implantation (CI) in adult deaf patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the speech perception performance during repetition testing according to various factors and to identify the predictive factors associated with postoperative speech perception. The performances on speech perception under audio-only conditions were examined over time in 61 adult patients with CI. Mono- and bi-syllable and sentence repetition testing, using both the Korean version of the Central Institute for the Dea

Measuring the Moment-to-Moment Variability of Tinnitus: The TrackYourTinnitus Smart Phone App.

Tinnitus, the phantom perception of sound without a corresponding external sound, is a frequent disorder which causes significant morbidity. So far there is no treatment available that reliably reduces the tinnitus perception. The research is hampered by the large heterogeneity of tinnitus and the fact that the tinnitus perception fluctuates over time. It is therefore necessary to develop tools for measuring fluctuations of tinnitus perception over time and for analyzing data on single subject basis. However, this type of longitudinal measurement is difficult to perform using the traditional r

Stimulation rate reduction and auditory development in poorly performing cochlear implant users with auditory neuropathy.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) exhibit altered neural synchrony in response to auditory stimuli. It has been hypothesized that a slower rate of electrical stimulation in programming strategies for cochlear implant (CI) users with ANSD may enhance development of neural synchrony and speech perception abilities. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. SETTING: Tertiary otologic practice. PATIENTS: Twenty-two patients with ANSD underwent CI. Patients with complete postoperative audiometric data and at least 2 years of follow-up were included in further a

Temporal binding and social perception - A replication study.

Previous studies reported action-effect binding for social contexts in a variety of experimental contexts. When confronted with social information, perceptual or conceptual, participants underestimated the duration of time intervals between their actions and subsequent social events, as compared to only observing social events. Current evidence demonstrates stronger temporal binding both for conditions of believing in an interaction with a social partner, and for perceiving an interaction partner. Fewer data exist about the influence of exclusively perceptual social cues such as interaction wi

No aftereffect of motor duration production on auditory duration perception.

Adaptation to stimulus duration causes a repulsive aftereffect on the perceived duration of subsequent stimuli. Most studies investigating duration adaptation have found that the effect is confined to the adapted modality, highlighting unimodal components of duration processing. Here, we use adaptation to test whether motor and auditory duration processing rely on partially shared neural mechanisms by looking for a transfer of the duration aftereffect between these modalities. We asked participants to estimate the perceived duration of auditory stimuli following auditory or motor adaptation. W

The influence of developmental noise exposure on the temporal processing of acoustical signals in the auditory cortex of rats.

Previous experiments have acknowledged that inappropriate or missing auditory inputs during the critical period of development cause permanent changes of the structure and function of the auditory system (Bures et al., 2017). We explore in this study how developmental noise exposure influences the coding of temporally structured stimuli in the neurons of the primary auditory cortex (AC) in Long Evans rats. The animals were exposed on postnatal day 14 (P14) for 12 minutes to a loud (125 dB SPL) broad-band noise. The responses to an amplitude-modulated (AM) noise, frequency-modulated (FM) tones,

Global attention facilitates the planning, but not execution of goal-directed reaches.

In daily life, humans interact with multiple objects in complex environments. A large body of literature demonstrates that target selection is biased toward recently attended features, such that reaches are faster and trajectory curvature is reduced when target features (i.e., color) are repeated (priming of pop-out). In the real world, however, objects are comprised of several features-some of which may be more suitable for action than others. When fetching a mug from the cupboard, for example, attention not only has to be allocated to the object, but also the handle. To date, no study has in

Vestibular rehabilitation following mild traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Vertigo, dizziness, and imbalance are a symptom complex that is commonly found following concussion. Early metabolic changes following concussion may lead to worsening of the injury and symptoms in individuals not properly managed from the outset. When symptoms do not recover spontaneously, skilled vestibular rehabilitation can be an effective modality in an attempt to normalize the individual's vestibular responses. PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to appraise the current and accepted methods available to the skilled clinician in quantifying and treating vestibular dysfun

Multiple sources of information and time-to-contact judgments.

Four experiments examined how the visual system deals with multiple information sources for perceiving dynamic events. Two tau-type optical variables, one defined by the expanding object's image and the other defined by the expanding angular extent composed of the line of sight and the object's shadow, were manipulated in time-to-contact judgments. When the information specified by both variables was consistent, little perceptual accuracy was gained by having two information sources. When the two sources conflicted, perceptual accuracy deteriorated in proportion to the degree of conflict. Base

The role of IQ in a component model of reading.

The purpose of this study was to test the role of visual processing speed and IQ in a model of reading. This study investigated whether the processes involved in reading differ between a group of children with and a group without reading disability. These two groups of children completed tests of reading comprehension, listening comprehension, decoding, processing speed, and intelligence. The results indicated that processing speed explains a significant amount of variance in reading comprehension over that accounted for by the simple view of reading. Also, IQ accounts for a significant amount

Pulfrich revisited.

The Pulfrich phenomenon is a stereo-illusion resulting from latency disparities in the visual pathways. It is common after optic neuritis, but is also to be found with other conditions. The symptoms are often difficult for the patient to explain and for the physician to understand. Symptoms may be sufficiently disturbing to significantly interfere with a patient's life (e.g., prevention of driving). Treatment with the use of monocular tints is simple and effective.

Cross-dimensional interference between time and distance during spatial navigation is mediated by speed representations in intraparietal sulcus and area hMT.

When navigating a straight path, perceived travel time and perceived traveled distance are linked via movement speed. Behavioral studies have revealed systematic interferences between the perception of travel time and distance, but the role of neuronal representations of movement speed for these effects has not been addressed to date. Using a combined fMRI-behavioral paradigm, we investigate the neuronal representations that underlie cross-dimensional interferences between travel time and traveled distance. Participants underwent fMRI while experiencing visual forward movements for either a sh
