Statistical analysis was made of a total of 5530 patients (6798 cases) of dermatophytoses presenting at our private clinic during the period 1992 to 2001. The number of patients and cases represents 8.0% and 9.8% of the entire outpatient population during that time, respectively. Sex ratio (male/female) was 1.5. Among the 6798 dermatophytoses cases, tinea pedis was most frequent (65.8%), followed by tinea unguium (20.7%), tinea cruris (7.2%), tinea corporis (3.9%), tinea manuum (2.4%) and tinea barbae (0.04%). The incidence of tinea unguium increased, whereas that of tinea pedis, tinea cruris,

The koranic schools are in poor socio-economical conditions in Dakar and skin diseases are common in these conditions. The goal of our descriptive study was to determine the prevalence of skin diseases occurring in these situations. One hundred five boys from four koranic schools of Dakar were examined. Eighty percent of the examined boys were with unless one skin disease. Tinea capitis (42.66%), scabiosis (13.33%), pyoderma (15.33%), plantar keratodermia (100%) were the skin diseases. In 34.52% these skin disease were associated and antecedents of skin infections diseases were reported in 89.

INTRODUCTION: Kerion celsi is a form of deep inflammatory tinea capitis, presenting with suppurative, tender plaque, often with pustules and purulent drainage. Tinea capitis is believed to be increasing in incidence worldwide. It mostly affects children and is most commonly caused by zoophilic dermatophytes. Globally, the most common transmission route is anthropophilic.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a case of a 92-year-old female without associated chronic diseases, who lived alone in urban apartment and developed kerion in addition to having chronic untreated toenail onychomycosis and

Cell-mediated immunity is generally considered as the principal immunological response to dermatophyte infection. However, certain clinical manifestations associated with a humoral antibody response occasionally occur as complications to dermatophytosis (e.g. vasculitis, urticaria). Immediate wheal reaction to intradermal application of "trichophytin" is frequent in patients with chronic T. rubrum infection and can be passively transferred with serum, which demonstrates the presence of specific IgE antibodies in these patients. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis and modifications thereof were appli

Internationally adopted children often present diseases contracted in the country of origin. Skin diseases are common in new arrivals, and diagnosis may prove challenging for GPs or even dermatologists if they are inexperienced in the extensive geographic and ethnic diversity of international adoptees. To analyse the frequency and characteristics of skin diseases in international adoptees. In total, 142 adoptees were evaluated for a cross-sectional cohort study. The most frequent diseases observed at arrival were dermatological conditions. Of the adoptees, 70% presented at least one skin disea

During a two year period all patients referred to the Dermatology Department with the diagnosis of dermatophytosis were studied. We obtained 158 dermatophyte isolated belonging to 12 species of dermatophytes. The most frequent causal agents were M. canis in 58 (36.7%), T. mentagrophytes var mentagrophytes in 36 (22.7%), E. floccosum in 29 (18.3%) and T. rubrum in 17 (10.7%). M. canis was the most prevalent causal agent of tinea capitis and tinea corporis. The most frequent species in the tinea cruris was E. floccosum. In 4 patients there were simultaneous infection by two different agents. The

Keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD) is a rare inherited disorder of keratinization clinically characterized by diffuse follicular hyperkeratosis, progressive scarring alopecia of scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes, corneal dystrophy and photophobia. Woolly hair is a hereditary condition, transmitted as an autosomal dominant or recessive trait, usually seen in Caucasians at birth or shortly after, in which there are curly, thick, often heavily pigmented hairs. We report two cases, a son and his mother, in whom KFSD occurred in association with woolly hair. In addition, various dental a

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis and tinea corporis are highly prevalent fungal skin infections, which globally are mainly caused by Microsporum canis and Trichophyton rubrum, respectively. While in the United States and Great Britain Trichophyton tonsurans is widely prevalent as a causative pathogen, it so far only plays a minor role in Germany.
OBJECTIVES: Since the frequency of pathogenic species varies regionally and temporally, this study assesses the proportion of Trichophyton tonsurans infections in the dermatology department of a large university hospital in Germany from 2019 to 2022 and tho

Scalp hyperkeratosis is common in childhood and adolescence. Diagnosis is affected by age, race, and history of infectious exposure, and associated symptoms including atopic features, alopecia, inflammatory nodules, presence and type of cutaneous lesions outside of the scalp, and nuchal lymphadenopathy. Tinea capitis is common in children with skin of color, especially black and Hispanic children. In adolescents, seborrheic dermatitis predominates as the cause of scalp hyperkeratosis, but tinea is still of concern. This article aims to help the practitioner comfortably diagnose and treat scalp

Dermatophytosis is an infection of the hair, skin, or nails caused by a dermatophyte, which is most commonly of the Trichophyton genus and less commonly of the Microsporum or Epidermophyton genera. Tinea capitis, tinea pedis, and onychomycosis are common dermatologic diseases that may result from such an infection. The treatment of fungal infections caused by a dermatophyte has been successful when treated with oral or topical antifungal agents. Terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole are oral antimycotics that are effective in the treatment of superficial mycoses, although, depending on th

The invisible long-wave ultraviolet radiation (340-450 nm, max.365 nm) produced by a Wood lamp can help to diagnose dermatoses with a characteristic fluorescence (tinea capitis, erythrasma, tinea versicolor, Pseudomonas infections, porphyrians, and pigmentary alterations). It is also used in the detection of medications that are taken systemically (tetracycline) or that are applied to the skin. Recently, a fluorescence technique with Wood light has been used as a preventive measure to monitor and quantify skin protection at the workplace and to teach workers in high-risk occupations the proper

This literature review aims to comprehensively evaluate the clinical and dermoscopic presentations of common pediatric diseases among children with skin of color (SoC) while also addressing potential variations based on racial backgrounds. This review encompasses various conditions, such as nevi subtypes, viral infections, infestations, and inflammatory dermatoses, as well as hair diseases and abnormal vascular formations, occurring in pediatric populations. Overall, we identified 7 studies on nevi subtypes, 24 studies on skin infections, 6 on inflammatory dermatoses, 10 on hair diseases and d

In the framework of a survey on dermatophytoses, 14,619 clinical specimens taken from outpatients with symptoms suggestive of tinea and referred to a Medical Mycology laboratory in Tehran, Iran, were analyzed by direct microscopy and culture. In total, 777 dermatophyte strains recovered in culture were randomly identified by a formerly established RFLP analysis method based on the rDNA ITS regions. For confirmation of species identification, 160 isolates representing the likely entire species spectrum were subjected to ITS-sequencing. Infection was confirmed in 5,175 collected samples (35.4%)

Dermatophytoses are of worldwide distribution. Epidemiological studies concerning dermatophyte infections have been performed in many countries and differences in the incidence and the aetiological agents have been reported in different geographical locations. This study was undertaken to investigate the prevailing species of dermatophytes in the island of Crete, Greece, and their pattern of infection during a 7-year period (1997-2003). A total of 5544 samples obtained from 3751 patients with clinically suspected dermatomycoses were examined mycologically in the laboratory of Clinical Microbio

Dermatophytoses are common fungal infections caused by dermatophytes but there are few data about this condition in the childhood. 137 children below the age of 12 and clinically diagnosed as tineas were investigated prospectively at Instituto de Puericultura e Pediatria, Rio de Janeiro, from 1994 to 1999. Hair, skin/nails scraping and pus swabs were collected from lesions and processed for fungus. Male children from 2 to 12 years were mostly affected; tinea capitis (78 cases) mainly caused by Microsporum canis (46 cases) was the most common clinical form. Tinea corporis (43 cases) mainly caus

In their early stages, some dermatoses of the scalp such as psoriasis seborrheic dermatitis, tinea capitis and discoid lupus erythematosus are often hardly noticeable to others. However, the eruptions are occasionally severe and extensive. Reaching an adequate diagnosis is of utmost impor¬tance for an adequate healthcare.

Tinea blepharociliaris is a rare dermatophyte infection affecting the eyelashes and eyelids, often misdiagnosed as blepharitis, eczema, or bacterial infection, leading to ineffective treatments and recurrent symptoms. We report a case of a 10-year-old girl with erythematous plaques and fine scaling on the eyelids and eyelashes, initially suspected to have facial tinea or contact dermatitis. Direct mycological examination confirmed the presence of fungal filaments and spores, with culture identifying Trichophyton rubrum as the causative organism. Systemic and topical antifungal therapy resulted
