Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography findings in Alström syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Alström syndrome is a multi-system recessive disorder caused by mutations in ALMS1 gene. The aim of this study was to characterize morphological retinal changes in Alström patients using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. METHODS: We studied volunteer patients attending the conference of Alström Syndrome International, a support group for affected families, using hand-held spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in an office setting. Patients had a clinical dilated retinal examination. Past medical records were reviewed. RESULTS: Twenty-two Alström patien

Aborted choroidal coloboma: fundus imaging and optical coherence tomography.

Choroidal coloboma is characterised by poor embryonic development of chorioretinal structures and is of different types. We present a case of choroidal coloboma where the retinal pigment epithelium was present, clinically and on imaging, but rest of the structures were poorly formed. This observation suggests that in some cases, fusion of the fetal cleft may occur aberrantly, resulting in an aborted choroidal coloboma.

[Optical coherence tomography for differentiation of parathyroid gland tissue].

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution imaging technique that allows the identification of microarchitectural features in real-time. OBJECTIVE: Can OCT be used to differentiate parathyroid tissue from other cervical tissue entities? MATERIAL AND METHODS: All investigations were carried out during cervical operations. Initially, ex vivo images were analyzed to define morphological imaging criteria for each tissue entity. These criteria were used to evaluate a first series of ex vivo images. In a second phase the practicability of the technique was investigated in

[Intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography In Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty].

BACKGROUND: Like penetrating keratoplasty (pKPL), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) is a standard treatment for keratoconus and stromal corneal dystrophies. Intraoperative optical coherence tomography permits live or real-time monitoring during surgery, especially if it is necessary to estimate distances or if the anterior chamber view is limited. METHODS: Review of literature from PUBMED and our own clinical and experimental data. Key words were "intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomograph", "DALK", "Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty" and "iOCT". The time frame was set from 2005 to

Retinal vessel calibre measurements by optical coherence tomography angiography.

PURPOSE: To compare the vessel calibre measurements between optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and colour fundus photography. METHODS: In this retrospective comparative study, OCTA and colour fundus images of healthy eyes and eyes with optic atrophy were evaluated. The colour fundus image was registered manually using Image J software to the OCTA image of the optic disc. Two independent graders measured the vessel calibre of the widest vein and artery in each peripapillary quadrant on a 3.4 mm diameter circle centred on the optic disc in the same location on both images. The diff

Estimating Retinal Blood Flow Velocities by Optical Coherence Tomography.

IMPORTANCE: While optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography has been considered to evaluate retinal capillary blood flow instead of fluorescein angiography, the reflectance pattern of blood vessels on structural OCT might also provide retinal capillary flow data in the absence of fluorescein angiography. This potential has been insufficiently explored, despite promising data concerning a possible relationship between the reflectance pattern of blood vessels and their perfusion velocity in a laboratory setting. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential of retinal blood flow velocity estimation

Optical coherence tomography imaging of optic disc cavernous haemangioma.

Optic disc cavernous haemangiomas are either found incidentally or after presentation with vitreous haemorrhage. They are characterised by a cluster of grapes appearance to the multiple vascular saccules that make up the tumour. They are more often found in the retinal periphery but rarely occur at the optic disc. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging may be a useful non-invasive imaging modality to follow-up these lesions. We present the case of an asymptomatic 60-year-old lady referred from her optometrist with a lesion overlying the optic disc and the ensuing diagnosis of cavernous hae

Applications of optical coherence tomography in pediatric clinical neuroscience.

For nearly two centuries, the ophthalmoscope has permitted examination of the retina and optic nerve-the only axons directly visualized by the physician. The retinal ganglion cells project their axons, which travel along the innermost retina to form the optic nerve, marking the beginning of the anterior visual pathway. Both the structure and function of the visual pathway are essential components of the neurologic examination as it can be involved in numerous acquired, congenital and genetic central nervous system conditions. The development of optical coherence tomography now permits the pedi

The application of optical coherence tomography in neurologic diseases.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become an increasingly popular tool in various disciplines of medicine, particularly ophthalmology and neurology. It is an imaging technology that has revolutionized the practice of ophthalmology by providing anatomic detail of pathologic changes in the retina and optic nerve. OCT is routinely used as an ancillary test that can aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of neuro-ophthalmic diseases such as papilledema, optic neuritis, and neuroretinitis. OCT measurements have also been shown to predict visual prognosis in compressive optic neuropathies. Changes

One specific velocity color mapping using optical coherence tomography.

Depth resolved coherence gating along with Doppler shift detection of the carrier frequency is used for one predetermined velocity mapping in different flows. Bidirectional rapid scanning optical delay of optical coherence tomography system is applied in the reference arm. Tilted capillary entry is used as a hydrodynamic phantom to model a sign-variable flow with complex geometry. Structural and one specific velocity images are obtained from the scanning interferometer signal processing in the frequency domain using analog and digital filtering. A standard structural image is decomposed into t

Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging of Haab Striae.

The authors present a case series demonstrating the anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) findings of Haab striae in three patients with congenital glaucoma. The use of AS-OCT in the assessment of Haab striae in pediatric glaucoma is novel, previously undescribed, and possibly allows differentiation between acute and chronic corneal changes.

Optical coherence tomography and autofluorescence imaging of human tonsil.

For the first time, we present co-registered autofluorescence imaging and optical coherence tomography (AF/OCT) of excised human palatine tonsils to evaluate the capabilities of OCT to visualize tonsil tissue components. Despite limited penetration depth, OCT can provide detailed structural information about tonsil tissue with much higher resolution than that of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and Ultrasound. Different tonsil tissue components such as epithelium, dense connective tissue, lymphoid nodules, and crypts can be visualized by OCT. The co-registered AF imaging can pr

Retinal neurodegeneration on optical coherence tomography and cerebral atrophy.

Neurodegeneration in dementia is mainly evaluated by assessing cerebral atrophy, while retinal neurodegeneration can be quantified in vivo using optical coherence tomography (OCT). We examined the association of retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thinning with global and regional cerebral atrophy on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Malay participants aged 60-80 years from the Epidemiology of Dementia in Singapore Study underwent comprehensive examinations, including 3-Tesla cranial MRI. RNFL and GC-IPL thicknesses were obtained from spectral doma

Optical coherence tomography imaging of ocular and periocular tumours.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become pivotal in the practice of ophthalmology. Similar to other ophthalmic subspecialties, ophthalmic oncology has also incorporated OCT into practice. Anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT), ultra-high resolution OCT (UHR-OCT), spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) and enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI-OCT), have all been described to be helpful in the diagnosis, treatment planning and monitoring response of ocular and periocular tumours. Herein we discuss the role of OCT including the advantages and limitations of its use in the setting of common intraocular and adnexal

Optical coherence tomography imaging of the proximal lacrimal system.

INTRODUCTION: There are currently no routinely used imaging modalities for the proximal lacrimal system. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a safe and non-invasive method of high resolution cross-sectional imaging of tissue microstructures using infra-red radiation. In this study we investigate whether OCT may be used to image the punctum and proximal canaliculus. METHODS: A cohort of healthy subjects with normal ocular anatomy and no symptoms of epiphora were prospectively invited to enrol. Spectral OCT images of the lower punctae were captured with a Topcon 3D Optical Coherence Tomograph

Morphological phenotyping of mouse hearts using optical coherence tomography.

Transgenic mouse models have been instrumental in the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms behind many genetically based cardiovascular diseases such as Marfan syndrome (MFS). However, the characterization of their cardiac morphology has been hampered by the small size of the mouse heart. In this report, we adapted optical coherence tomography (OCT) for imaging fixed adult mouse hearts, and applied tools from computational anatomy to perform morphometric analyses. The hearts were first optically cleared and imaged from multiple perspectives. The acquired volumes were then corrected for refr
