An 18-year-old man with an ulceration of his right tonsil and cervical lymphadenopathy was examined. The patient also had a papular eruption in his face, chest, abdomen, and upper extremities. There were no signs of genital involvement. Routine serological tests for syphilis were reactive and histological findings of a cervical lymph node biopsy were characteristic for syphilitic lymphadenitis. Spirochetes were also identified in the tissue sections. A diagnosis of secondary syphilis of the tonsil with cervical syphilitic lymphadenitis was made. In recent years, the number of new cases of syph

Some conditions of the tonsils and adenoids often present problems in diagnosis for the surgical pathologist. These include variations of normal histologic features, atypical reactive and metaplastic lesions, hamartomas, papillomas, carcinomas, and some types of lymphomas. The reasons for errors in histopathologic diagnosis have been emphasized, and the clinicopathologic features that can help to prevent misdiagnoses are discussed.

A case of Burkitt's lymphoma is reported in which both its location in Waldeyer's ring and the age of the patient, 2 years, are rare. The disease is found in an endemic and a sporadic form. OBJECTIVES: Tonsillotomy with radiofrequency (RF) is one of the newest treatments for chronic tonsillitis, but the mechanism of RF effects and complications are still pending. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of RF on the histological and bacteriological characteristics of the tonsils (Case-control study).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In fifty-two patients with chronic tonsillitis in 2017-2018, immediately after tonsillectomy, the tonsils were divided into 2sections; one sample treated with RF, and the other one considered as control, without intervention. All tonsil samples sent f…

The palatine tonsils, localized in the oropharynx, are easily accessible secondary lymphoid tissue in humans. Inflammation of the palatine tonsils, local and chronic in case of chronic tonsillitis (CT) or acute in the presence of a peritonsillar abscess (PTA), ranks among the most common diseases in otolaryngology. However, the functionality of tonsillar immune cells, notably T-cells, in the context of these immune pathologies is poorly understood. We have examined the functional status of human tonsillar T-cells in CT and compared it to the acute inflammatory setting of a PTA. Patients presen…
