Invasive cervical resorption: clinical and radiological diagnosis and treatment of 3 cases.

Invasive cervical resorption is a relatively uncommon form of external root resorption. Etiologic factors include trauma, orthodontic treatment, intracoronal bleaching, and inflammation, but invasive cervical resorption is often idiopathic. There may be no external signs of this disorder, and the resorptive lesion is often detected by routine radiographic examination. This article describes the clinical and radiological diagnoses and treatment modalities of invasive cervical resorption in 3 patients. Two of the 3 cases were incidental radiographic findings and the teeth concerned were symptom

Increasing the amount of attached gingiva using a modified apically repositioned flap.

The purpose of this study is to describe a modification in the apically repositioned flap technique. Unlike the original technique, this technique preserves the marginal gingiva thus avoiding the risk of recession. It is recommended in cases where an increase in attached gingiva is desired. This study reports on the results of 54 single buccal areas consecutively treated in 38 healthy patients. The increase in the amount of attached gingiva, the impact on marginal tissue recession, and the impact on probing depth were analyzed. All 54 areas were evaluated at 8 weeks; 21 areas were analyzed for

External cervical resorption treatments in routine dental practice: a nationwide registry-based cohort study with long-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: External cervical resorption (ECR) is a dental condition characterized by irreversible loss of tooth structure due to periodontal tissue activity, with varied treatment approaches. Evidence on outcomes mainly comes from retrospective studies in specialized settings with limited follow-up, whereas population-level real-world data are scarce. The Swedish National Dental Health Registry (SNDHR) provides a unique opportunity to examine treatment patterns and long-term outcomes of ECR at a national level. This study aimed to map treatment modalities used for teeth diagnosed with ECR in

Surgical repair of invasive cervical root resorption with calcium-enriched mixture cement: a case report.

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) occurs in the cervical area of the teeth due to the formation of a soft tissue that progressively resorbs dentin. The disease is asymptomatic unless the pulp is exposed. This article presents a case involving a mandibular canine that was treated with a calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement. After a full mucoperiosteal flap was performed, the soft tissue was curetted away and the cavity filled with CEM biomaterial. One week later, the supragingival surface of the CEM was polished and covered with composite resin. At a 1-year follow-up visit, the pulp was healt

Correlation analysis of alveolar bone loss in buccal/palatal and proximal surfaces in rats.

The aim was to correlate alveolar bone loss in the buccal/palatal and the mesial/distal surfaces of upper molars in rats. Thirty-three, 60-day-old, male Wistar rats were divided in two groups, one treated with alcohol and the other not treated with alcohol. All rats received silk ligatures on the right upper second molars for 4 weeks. The rats were then euthanized and their maxillae were split and defleshed with sodium hypochlorite (9%). The cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) was stained with 1% methylene blue and the alveolar bone loss in the buccal/palatal surfaces was measured linearly in 5 poin

Resin bonding to cervical sclerotic dentin: a review.

Several reports have indicated that resin bond strengths to noncarious sclerotic cervical dentine are lower than bonds made to normal dentine. This is thought to be due to tubule occlusion by mineral salts, preventing resin tag formation. The purpose of this review was to critically examine what is known about the structure of this type of dentine. Recent transmission electron microscopy revealed that in addition to occlusion of the tubules by mineral crystals, many parts of wedge-shaped cervical lesions contain a hypermineralised surface that resists the etching action of both self-etching pr

Structure and mechanical properties of Ank/Ank mutant mouse dental tissues--an animal model for studying periodontal regeneration.

Enamel, dentine and cementum are dental tissues with distinct functional properties associated with their unique hierarchical structures. Some potential ways to repair or regenerate lost tooth structures have been revealed in our studies focused on examining teeth obtained from mice with mutations at the mouse progressive ankylosis (ank) locus. Previous studies have shown that mice with such mutations have decreased levels of extracellular inorganic pyrophosphate (PP(i)) at local sites resulting in ectopic calcification in joint areas and in formation of a significantly thicker cementum layer

Efficacy of acellular dermal matrix and coronally advanced flaps for the treatment of induced gingival recession defects: a histomorphometric study in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession (GR) defects can be treated by various methods, including acellular dermal matrix (ADM) or coronally advanced flaps (CAFs). The aim of this histomorphometric experiment is to compare the efficacy of ADM and CAF for treating GR defects in dogs. METHODS: In eight beagle dogs, a critical-size labial GR defect was surgically induced on bilateral maxillary cuspids under general anesthesia. Test sites received ADM and CAF, and control sites underwent CAF treatment alone. Plaque index (PI), bleeding index (BI), and gingival index (GI) were measured at 4 weeks (baseline

Invasive cervical resorption following orthodontic treatment: Two cases involving the same patient.

UNLABELLED: Invasive cervical resorption (ICR), a destructive form of external root resorption, is characterized by invasion of the fibrovascular tissue. This phenomenon is very rare and appears in 0.02% of the general population where the leading factors are orthodontics in addition to trauma, restorations, and bleaching. Heavy orthodontic force may increase the incidence to 1%. One of the main concerns regarding ICR is that it is often misdiagnosed with conventional diagnostic tools. In recent decades, a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging technique has become more common and can le

Assessment of parameters affecting the presence of the central papilla using a non-invasive radiographic method.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to assess the relationship between radiopaque landmarks and central papilla presence and height. The probability of the presence of a central papilla has been related to the bone crest-contact point distance. Papilla height has been measured by inserting a dental probe under local anesthesia, but this method is invasive. It would be desirable to assess the influence of other dental landmarks on the presence and height of the papilla and to use a non-invasive method for measurement of papilla height that is simple, accurate, and accepted readily by patients.
