Genetic and environmental contributions for the relationship between tooth loss and oral potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association between tooth loss and oral potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma, focusing on epidemiological factors and genetic variants. METHODS: Case-control study, including histologically confirmed oral potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma cases and healthy controls. Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios for this association were calculated. Single-nucleotides polymorphisms were tested for individuals with and without missing teeth. RESULTS: Case individuals were more edentulous while controls had fewer mi…

Association between tooth loss and adherence to oral maintenance in a dental clinic: A retrospective study of more than 20 years.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between adherence to professional oral maintenance visits and tooth loss is generally accepted in periodontal treatment; however, this relationship has not been clarified in general dental practices. We evaluated the effectiveness of adherence to professional maintenance by a retrospective survey in a private practice. METHODS: We retrospectively extracted data of 395 patients in a general dental practice who had been followed for more than 20 years. For comparisons, two patient groups were created based on oral maintenance rates: a high- (≥75%) and a low- (<75%) …

Association of Sleep Duration with Tooth Loss and Periodontitis: Insights from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2005-2020).

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disorders such as insomnia, apnea, and restless leg syndrome can negatively affect a person's overall health and may cause hypertension, heart failure, and coronary heart disease. Likewise, periodontitis, a gum disease, can lead to both physical and psychological health issues, exerting a considerable effect on one's overall well-being-periodontitis stands as a primary cause of tooth loss. Nevertheless, there has been insufficient research on the correlation between the amount of sleep individuals get and the occurrence of periodontitis/tooth loss among Americans. Therefore, t…

A long-term follow-up analysis of associations between tooth loss and multiple cancers in the Linxian General Population Cohort.

Poor oral health, indicated by tooth loss and periodontal disease, may be an important risk factor for various cancers. Prior studies have found inconsistent associations between tooth loss and several cancer types. Here, we examined the relationship between tooth loss and incident cases of multiple cancers in the Linxian General Population Nutrition Intervention Trial cohort. In this large prospective cohort of over 29,000 participants, there were 3101, 1701, 626, 327, 348, and 179 incident esophageal, gastric cardia, gastric noncardia, liver, lung, and colorectal cancer cases, respectively, …

Evaluation of Single Tooth Loss to Maxillary Sinus and Surrounding Bone Anatomy With Cone-Beam Computed Tomography: A Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Posterior maxillary tooth loss may complicate the implant treatment due to the alterations in alveolar anatomy and maxillary sinus pneumatization. This study aimed to comprehensively examine the anatomical structure of this region from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The posterior maxilla regions with single tooth loss were analyzed by dividing the variables into 3 subgroups from images of 597 patients chosen from 1160 CBCTs. Variables associated with sinus membrane (SM), sinus dimensions, ostium, septa, sinus neighborhood, alveolar bone height …

Loss of the E3 ubiquitin ligase LRSAM1 sensitizes peripheral axons to degeneration in a mouse model of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous condition characterized by peripheral axon degeneration with subsequent motor and sensory deficits. Several CMT gene products function in endosomal sorting and trafficking to the lysosome, suggesting that defects in this cellular pathway might present a common pathogenic mechanism for these conditions. LRSAM1 is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that is implicated in this process, and mutations in LRSAM1 have recently been shown to cause CMT. We have generated mouse mutations in Lrsam1 to create an animal model of this form o

Multiple tooth-losses during development suppress age-dependent emergence of oscillatory neural activities in the oral somatosensory cortex.

Tooth and tooth-related organs play important roles in not only mastication, but also sensory perception in the oral region. In general, sensory neural inputs during the developmental period are required for the maturation of functions in the sensory cortex. However, whether maturations of oral somatosensory cortex (OSC) require certain levels of sensory input from oral regions has been unclear. The present study investigated the influence of multiple tooth-losses during the developmental period on age-dependent emergence of rhythmic activities of population neurons in the OSC. Low-frequency e

An infant with primary tooth loss and palmar hyperkeratosis: a novel mutation in the NTRK1 gene causing congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis.

Patients with congenital insensitivity to pain and anhidrosis (CIPA), caused by mutations in the NTRK1 gene, can be difficult to diagnose because of their variable presentation, the lack of simple diagnostic tests, and the paucity of cases reported in North America. We describe a 1-year-old infant who had tooth loss and palmar hyperkeratosis as the primary manifestations of CIPA. He was initially evaluated by a pediatric dentist and epidermal dysplasia syndromes were considered, but insensitivity to pain was suspected after a skeletal survey revealed an unrecognized skull fracture. Nerve condu…

Tooth Loss and Oral Health-related Quality of Life in a Sub-cohort Within the Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease Consortium.

Chronic graft-versus-host-disease (cGVHD) is a major complication of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) that frequently affects the oral cavity with manifestations of oral mucosal inflammation, salivary gland hypofunction, and trismus. However, the long-term consequences of oral cGVHD on oral health outcomes are not defined. This report assesses long-term tooth loss and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQL) measures in patients who have received alloHCT. Participants were evaluated at an initial post-transplant dental visit which consisted of dental and periodontal e…

Smoking modifies the effect of diabetes on severe tooth loss: Cross-sectional analysis of Hawai'i BRFSS data from 2012 to 2020.

Smoking and diabetes have detrimental effects on tooth loss, though few studies have examined their interaction. Using five waves of cross-sectional data from the state of Hawai'i in the United States, this study aimed to examine the interaction effects between smoking and diabetes on severe tooth loss (≥6) among adults, using a weighted logistic regression approach. In Hawai'i, the overall prevalence of severe tooth loss was 9.7%. Among never smokers, diabetes was associated with a 10.3% higher prevalence of severe tooth loss compared with those without diabetes. The differences due to diabet…

Prevalence of Periodontitis and Tooth Loss Among Older Adult Women With Low Bone Mineral Density: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis and low bone mineral density (BMD) are both highly prevalent among older women and share inflammatory and metabolic pathways, yet their co-occurrence and combined impact on tooth loss remain insufficiently characterized, particularly in Middle Eastern populations. Active matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8), measured by point-of-care testing (PoCT) in oral rinse, is a candidate biomarker that may support periodontal screening in geriatric settings. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to determine and compare the prevalence and severity of periodontitis, classified usi…

Association between multiple long-term conditions and tooth loss among middle-aged and older Indians: A population-based cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral health, though linked with overall health and well-being, is often neglected in low- and middle-income countries such as India. Tooth loss, primarily caused by dental caries and periodontal disease, has been associated with malnutrition, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even mortality. Despite the increasing burden of multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs), limited research in India has explored the association between tooth loss and MLTCs. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of complete tooth loss and assessed its association with MLTCs using nationally …

ADGRU: Adaptive DenseNet with gated recurrent unit for automatic diagnosis of periodontal bone loss and stage periodontitis with tooth segmentation mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Periodontics and gingivitis are two of the most widely prevalent illnesses that affect people nowadays. The sixth most common disease in the world is periodontitis, and detecting periodontal bone loss is essential in the earlier condition and is crucial for the development of the proper diagnosis. Early bone loss detection can be assisted by using computer-assisted radiography examination. Understanding disease progression helps to select the most effective treatment action. OBJECTIVES: An effective deep model is suggested to detect periodontal bone loss at an earlier stage for pr

Association of rotating night shift work with tooth loss and severe periodontitis among permanent employees in Japan: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Severe aortic stenosis (AS) can be treated with transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). There is emerging evidence suggesting that high lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) levels may be associated with worse outcomes after TAVI. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs) within 12 months after TAVI and long‑term survival in patients with high and low Lp(a) levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter cohort study we included patients with severe AS qualified for TAVI with stored plasma available for Lp(a) measurement.

Tooth loss mediates the association between smoking and an increased risk of dementia among older adults: The JAGES prospective cohort study.

AIM: Tooth loss has various causes; however, its cause-specific effects on health outcomes remain unclear. This study evaluated whether the association between past/current smoking and risk of dementia was mediated by tooth loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This 9-year-follow-up prospective cohort study targeted adults aged ≥65 years. Dementia incidence during 2013-2019, smoking status (never, past/current) in 2010 and the number of remaining teeth (≤19, ≥20) in 2013 were the outcome, exposure and mediator, respectively. We used causal mediation analysis to fit the Cox proportional hazards model a…
