The impact of COVID-19 lockdown on maintenance of children's dental health: A questionnaire-based survey.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with several changes in maintenance of children's dental health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extent of these changes. METHODS: Parents were asked to respond anonymously to a questionnaire regarding alterations in their children's oral habits, such as frequency of eating and drinking, toothbrushing, signs of stress, and receiving oral health care during the lockdown period. The participants were reached either during their visit to the clinics or via the social media groups of the authors. RESULTS: There were 308 parents of c…

[Wedge-shaped defects of the neck of the tooth in regular brushing with an amine fluoride gel].

Gingival recession and wedge-shaped defects are caused mainly by incorrect tooth brushing procedures. The aim of this epidemiologic study was to determine if in addition there is a relationship to the regular use of an amine fluoride gel (pH 5.2) applied by a toothbrush. In a regression analysis, the effect of age, sex, education, toothbrushing frequency, gingival bleeding (PBI) and use of the gel on the occurrence of wedge-shaped defects was investigated. Similarly, the influence of these variables on the occurrence of gingival retraction without any hard tissue defect was investigated. Both …

Oral Hygiene and Dietary Behaviors Associated with Major Carious Lesions in Primary Dentition: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Dental caries in primary dentition is strongly related to daily oral hygiene routines and sugar-related dietary behav … ated caries, or advanced caries with pulpal/periapical involvement. The primary analysis focused on toothbrushing onset and frequency, toothbrush and toothpaste type, night feeding duration, sweets intake, and sweetened or carbonated beverage intake. Effects of daily home-use water flossing as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy in the treatment of stage I-II periodontitis: a 6-month randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the adjunctive effects of daily home-use water flossing alone or in combination with an herbal mouthrinse on the treatment of stage I-II periodontitis following non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). METHODS: This 6-month randomized trial was performed in 72 patients with stage I-II periodontitis. These patients underwent full-mouth scaling and subgingival instrumentation and then were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control (toothbrushing), water-flossing (toothbrushing + water flossing), or water-flossing/herb-containing mouthrinse (toothbrushing + water …

Microstructural changes of human enamel surfaces by brushing with and without dentifrice containing abrasive.

Toothbrushing with and without dentifrice containing abrasive was performed on human enamel pieces attached to resin plates exposed to the oral cavities of 3 human subjects for 8 weeks. The effects on the ground enamel surfaces with engraved scratches were examined by scanning electron and scanning laser microscopy. Brushing with such a dentifrice caused smaller scratches to disappear, large scratches to expand and new microwear to appear; in some samples, prism structures were exposed. Under brushing without dentifrice, these scratches were protected by an organic pellicle with mineral deposi…

The relationship between chewing sticks (Miswak) and periodontal health. 2. Relationship to plaque, gingivitis, pocket depth, and attachment loss.

For centuries, chewing sticks have been used as a tooth-cleaning device. One of the most commonly used types is known as the Miswak. Despite its common use, few studies have examined possible effects on the gingiva and the surrounding structures. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Miswak and periodontal health. The incisors, canines, and premolars were examined in 236 patients. All patients were interviewed regarding their demographic data, oral hygiene habits, and use of Miswak. Clinical examination included scoring of plaque, gingival inflammation, pocket depth

Formation of hydroxyapatite on tooth surfaces by calcium hypophosphite in saliva.

AIM: This in vitro study aimed to investigate whether calcium hypophosphite (CaP) mediates hydroxyapatite (HAP) formation in artificial and human saliva and, in a proof-of-principle toothbrushing model, promotes mineral deposition and occlusion of dentinal tubules. METHODS: A CaP solution was added to artificial saliva and human saliva, respectively. The resulting precipitate was analyzed using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). For the toothbrushing simulations, human dentin specimens were allocated to a test group treated with 2 wt% CaP solution and a control group treated with deionized water…

Testing a multi-behavioral intervention to improve oral health behaviors in the pediatric dental surgery population: protocol for the PROTECT trial.

Severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) is a common disease within marginalized pediatric populations. S-ECC is often treated under general anesthesia to facilitate extensive treatment in young children, but treatment does not address etiology of an infectious disease that is rooted in health behaviors. Without behavior changes related to toothbrushing and sugar consumption, many children experience recurrent disease, and some require subsequent surgeries. To improve post-surgery oral health, we developed PROTECT (Preventing Recurrent Operations Targeting Early Childhood Caries Treatment), a com…
