Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the commonest parasitic infection affecting the central nervous system in the world. However, sudden death is rare in these cases. Increased intracranial pressure, hydrocephalus, acute encephalitis, meningitis and reaction to antilarval drugs are the common causes of death in NCC. The case reported here is a rare case of sudden death, in an apparently healthy asymptomatic young adult male, who met with a vehicular accident and died almost instantaneously due to ruptured cysts of cysticerci produced by trauma. Possible mode of death is also discussed.

In 1868, J.M. Charcot published his memoir "sur quelques athropathies qui paraissent dépendre d'une lésion du cerveau ou de la moelle épinière "based on 4 cases of tabes dorsalis. This work was subsequently developed and presented in London in 1881 when Sir James Paget acknowledged the significance of this entity. "Charcot's joint" has come in use to mean that particular joint disease which results, from nervous lesions, whatever its nature. A controversy lasted between those who thought, e.g. Volkman, that mechanical trauma is the significant pathophysiological factor and those, e.g. Charcot,

A total of 100 clinical records have been studied to as certain the diagnostic use of brain CT. Most frequent diagnoses are: hypoxic-ischemic encephalopaty, seizure disorders, psychomotor delay, head enlargement and trauma. The first years of life was the period with a higher frequency of applications and the greater percentage of pathologic results (75-80 por 100) was found among intracranial hypertension, fetal distress, macrocephaly or infections of Central Nervous System and their sequelae. Minus than 50 por 100 of CT scans requested for seizures, psychomotor delay and trauma demonstrated

The records of 600 dogs injured in motor vehicle accidents and admitted as emergencies to the Trauma Emergency Service of the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital were studied. Young males were the most frequently injured dogs. The motor vehicle accidents resulted in a wide variety of injuries. Superficial wounds were diagnosed as the only manifestation of trauma in 190 (31%) dogs. Among the remaining 410 dogs, skeletal injury was diagnosed in 87% and soft organ injury in 27%. Multiple region injury occurred in 36% of all dogs. Among specific injuries, it was found that the pelvis wa

Our mouth is the mirror of our health and it might be said that numerous diseases which affect our organism may be manifested in the mouth. Early symptoms occurring within the oral cavity may emerge with diseases related to our blood system, gastrointestinal system, renal system, cardiovascular system, and mental system. They are manifested as a hyperkeratosis, which may have an erithematous background. What we talk about here is lichen ruber planus. Lichen ruber planus is a common chronic immunological inflammatory disease of mucosa and skin, whose manifestations vary from karatolytic to erit

The role of laparoscopic proctectomy in rectal cancer has not clearly been defined. Publications on long-term outcomes after laparoscopic proctectomy is lacking and there is a wide variation of practice patterns of rectal cancer management. Current data supports the feasibility of laparoscopic proctectomy for rectal cancer but due to surgeon, patient and tumor related factors open technique may be favored. Current series suggest that laparoscopic proctectomy can be performed with similar oncologic adequacy with regards to, circumferential resection margin, distal margin, local recurrence and q

Stimulation of the somatosensory system is more likely to evoke pain in patients with chronic pain after nervous system injury than in patients without somatosensory abnormalities. We now describe results of stimulation through a microelectrode at microampere thresholds (threshold microstimulation; TMIS) in the region of the human thalamic principal sensory nucleus (ventral caudal; Vc) during operations for treatment of movement disorders or of chronic pain. Patients were trained preoperatively to use a standard questionnaire to describe the location (projected field) and quality of sensations

BACKGROUND: Studies of trauma deaths have had a tremendous impact on the quality of contemporary trauma care. We studied causes of trauma death at a Level I Canadian trauma center, and tabulated preventable deaths from hemorrhage using explicit criteria.
METHODS: Trauma registry data were used to identify all trauma deaths at our institution from January 1, 1999 to December 31, 2003. Demographics, mechanism, and time or location of death were recorded. Registry data analysis and selective chart or autopsy review were then performed to assign causes of death.
RESULTS: A total of 558 consecuti

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify the causes and time to death of all trauma victims who died at a level I trauma center during an 11-year period.
STUDY DESIGN: Autopsies were performed on all patients who died secondary to trauma. Retrospective review of these autopsies was carried out and appended to existing trauma registry data. Standard definitions were used to attribute the cause of death in each case. Preventable deaths were determined by a standardized peer review process.
RESULTS: Between January 1985 and December 1995, a total of 900 trauma patients died. This r

Rumination, or thinking repetitively about one's distress, is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Current theories suggest that rumination contributes to PTSD symptoms directly, by increasing negative reactions to trauma cues (i.e., symptom exacerbation), or represents a form of cognitive avoidance, if verbal ruminations are less distressing than trauma imagery. The goal of this study was to test the symptom exacerbation and cognitive avoidance accounts of trauma-focused rumination. We recruited 135 trauma-exposed participants (n = 60 diagnosed with PTSD) and randomly assig

Trauma is the number one cause of death among Americans between the ages of 1 and 46 years, costing more than $670 billion a year. Following death related to central nervous system injury, hemorrhage accounts for the majority of remaining traumatic fatalities. Among those with severe trauma that reach the hospital alive, many may survive if the hemorrhage and traumatic injuries are diagnosed and adequately treated in a timely fashion. This article aims to review the recent advances in pathophysiology management following a traumatic hemorrhage as well as the role of diagnostic imaging in ident

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic spinal cord herniation (SCH) is a rare and often misdiagnosed condition characterized by displacement of the spinal cord through an anterior defect of the dural sac. This condition determines continuous focal trauma of the spinal cord, causing slowly progressive myelopathy. The peculiar MR scan findings, particularly sagittal T(2)-weighted images, allow its recognition.
OBJECTIVE: Herein, we report 3 cases of SCH and suggest a possible association with trauma-related neurodegenerative or chronic inflammatory diseases.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical files of all pati

The carotid body and carotid sinus are localized in the area of the carotid bifurcation and respond to pressure fluctuations in the arterial blood vessel system. In case of irritation or stimulation, nervous impulses can reflexively increase the ventilation or slow down the heart rate and blood pressure, respectively. The external stimulation of the carotid sinus by neck compression with subsequent bradycardia or asystolia, especially in pre-existing heart-disease, is discussed controversially in the literature. Histological examination of the tissue of the carotid bifurcation, particularly wi

Head pain can be a challenging, difficult, and interesting diagnostic problem. A detailed history and carefully performed and directed physical and laboratory examination will aid in the complex differential diagnosis--which includes structural disease of the eye, ear, nose, throat, teeth; trauma; central and peripheral nervous system infections and tumors; and various neuropathies of unknown cause. Systemic abnormalities such as hypertension are a frequent cause, as are emotional upset and tension. Other isolated and extremely rare causes, such as the anatomic abnormality of an elongated styl

BACKGROUND: Neurological symptoms following head trauma are common; however, the cause may not always be obvious. In the absence of open wounds, fractures, or surgical interventions, infectious causes may not be considered, especially viral infections such as Herpes simplex, and investigations may not be targeted to investigate this possibility.
CASE: A 39-year-old male presented with a severe headache, reduced consciousness, and confusion. Two days earlier, he had been discharged from the hospital, where he had been treated for traumatic brain injury with subarachnoid hemorrhage following a

The cannabinoids, Δ9 tetrahydrocannabinol and its analogue, nabilone, have been found to reliably attenuate the intensity and frequency of post-traumatic nightmares. This essay examines how a traumatic event is captured in the mind, after just a single exposure, and repeatedly replicated during the nights that follow. The adaptive neurophysiological, endocrine and inflammatory changes that are triggered by the trauma and that alter personality and behavior are surveyed. These adaptive changes, once established, can be difficult to reverse. But cannabinoids, uniquely, have been shown to interfe

Medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) are frequently associated with a history of traumatization. The first purpose of the present review paper was to investigate systematically the evidence for such relation in a subset of clinical samples with MUS presenting with functional somatization: chronic pelvic pain, irritable bowel syndrome and conversion and somatization disorder. The second purpose was to critically review three dominant models explaining the relation between trauma and MUS (i.e. dissociation, conversion and hierarchical cognitive models). The latter model in particular adequately

Full development of the frontal sinus is not achieved until approximately 19 years of age. An evaluation of frontal sinus injuries isolated to the subset of patients less than 20 years old has yet to be reported. In order to determine whether age was a factor in the clinical course of patients with frontal sinus fractures, 209 patients who sustained frontal sinus fractures from January 1985 to April 1990 were identified using the trauma registry from all six major trauma centers, one of which is a pediatric trauma center, in a county of 2.5 million people. Forty patients (19%) were between the
