INTRODUCTION: The misuse of and addiction to opioids are a national public health crisis. The complexity of delivering patient care in emergency departments exposes nurses to stressful work situations with complex patient loads and increasing levels of compassion fatigue. Emergency nurses were asked about their feelings of compassion fatigue while caring for patients with opioid use and/or substance use disorders.
METHODS: Twenty-four focus groups with emergency nurses (N = 53) at a level I trauma center were conducted in late 2019 and early 2020 are used in this qualitative study using thema

BACKGROUND: The quality of nurses' work environments in hospitals is of great concern. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses has specified 6 standards essential to a healthy (ie, satisfying and productive) work environment. These standards are sufficiently aligned to the Essentials of Magnetism processes to make this tool suitable for measuring healthy work environments.
OBJECTIVES: To identify differences in staff nurses' perceptions of the work environment by type of intensive care unit.
METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive design with strategic sampling was used in this secon

BACKGROUND: Americans experiencing homelessness are uniquely vulnerable to traumatic injuries and morbidity. Despite a high and increasing number of persons experiencing homelessness (PEH), American researchers have not comprehensively described the impact of this social problem on trauma patients in recent years.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study using the American College of Surgeons TQIP 2021-2022 data. We performed descriptive statistics and multivariable modeling to test for differences in clinical characteristics and discharge dispositions between adult trauma patients experienci

AIM: We describe our experience of developing a modified vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) dressing for open abdomens.
BACKGROUND: We see a high volume of trauma in our department. Massive delays in presentation of patients with acute abdomen are common. Closure at initial laparotomy is not possible in many cases, either because the patient has or will develop abdominal compartment syndrome, or because several re-look laparotomies will be required. A significant proportion of our patients who have undergone laparotomy therefore spend some of their stay in hospital with an open abdomen. The manage

Occupational injury is a major source of ocular trauma and is often preventable. A statewide population-based survey of severe work-related ocular injury was generated by using the California Hospital discharge database to identify hospitalized ocular injury and workers compensation as principal payor to identify work-relatedness. Information concerning diagnoses, procedures, causes of injury, length of hospital stay, total hospital charges and disposition at hospital discharge were obtained for injuries occurring during the calendar year 1988. A total of 455 admissions for work-related ocular

Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare pathological condition affecting the corpus callosum (CC), characterized by progressive demyelination and necrosis. While usually found in patients with chronic alcoholism, it has rarely been characterized in non-alcoholics. We describe a trauma patient with an unknown mechanism of injury, who was found to have MBD after remaining comatose for a prolonged period of time. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated restricted diffusion involving the genu, body, and splenium of the CC. The patient eventually awoke but was non-communicative and uncomp

BACKGROUND: Unplanned emergency department (ED) visits of nursing home residents (NHR) are common, with many transfers not leading to hospitalization. However, there is little research on what diagnostic and therapeutic measures are performed during visits.
AIMS: We analyzed underlying diagnoses, characteristics and performed medical procedures of unplanned outpatient ED visits by NHR.
METHODS: We conducted a multi-center study of 14 nursing homes (NHs) in northwestern Germany in 03/2018-07/2019. Hospital transfers were documented by nursing staff using a standardized questionnaire for 12 mo

INTRODUCTION: Fragility fractures (FF) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality and reflect a dramatic turning point in the life of older adults. The scientific discourse is dominated by proximal femoral fractures, but FF affect multiple parts of the body and often precede hip fractures. Orthogeriatric co-management has multiple shown to improve patient's outcome. We hypothesize that all geriatric patients with FF benefit from orthogeriatric co-management.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated all patients over 70 years with FF (hip joint, periprosthetic, spine, pel

Many U.S. Veterans have experienced the burdens of mental illness and suicide. The current article focuses on Veterans who served from 2001-2015. Although combat exposure and suicidal ideation are linked, approximately one half of all suicides among Active Duty service members (who have served since 2001) occurred among those who never deployed. Researchers who sought additional risks for suicide found that Veterans have greater odds of adversities in childhood than the general population. Adverse childhood experiences are stressful and traumatic experiences, including abuse and neglect, as we

Since october 1996, the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital of Navarra has carried out continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation in the bulb of the internal jugular vein (SjO2). This technique, used in patients with severe cranioencephalic trauma (SCET), is designed to facilitate care an ensure the use of adequate therapeutic measures in such patients. The present study has two parts: In the first part, SjO2 monitoring is defined and catheter insertion techniques, technical problems, and nursing care are described. In the second part, a retrospective review is made of patients admitted to the

This poster has been designed to impart information which was gathered for a seminar as part of an Anaesthetic Nursing Course. It looks at the research which has been compiled on this subject, both in the Nursing and the Medical fields and illustrates the recommendations made by these pieces of research. The poster also depicts the breakdown of fluid compartments in the body and the physiological transference of fluids within the body in times of crisis. There is another section in the poster which explains the differences between certain fluids which are typically used during hypovolaemic res

INTRODUCTION: Emergency and trauma surgery practitioners routinely perform primary and secondary surveys as a systematic approach to trauma care. While this approach has broad applications, clinicians must also be versed in the nuances of caring for special populations in trauma. One such example is the obstetric patient. The incidenc

Chronic pain is experienced by between one third and one half of the UK population. Nurses should ensure that patients' pain is assessed and managed when they present to hospital, including pre-existing chronic pain and acute pain as a result of trauma or surgical interventions. Acute pain that is inadequately managed may result in chronic pain, impeding the patient's return to normal function and daily activities. Depression and increasing age affect the likelihood of patients experiencing chronic pain. Nurses should be familiar with the pain assessment tools available for use with older peop

This is a synopsis of the presentation delivered at the Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses' Annual Congress and Nursing Symposium, September 11, 2012 in Washington, DC. We all have imperfections in our faces and bodies that we would like to change. Consider, though, the cancer patient or the trauma victim who must deal with a facial disfigurement that completely changes their appearance, and often, their ability to function normally. Anaplastology, which combines art and science through creativity and functionality, can make monumental improvements in the quality of a person's

Middle ear infections and ossicular disorders can cause conductive hearing loss. Ossicular disorders include fibrous unions in which scar tissue replaces the long process of the incus; disarticulations caused by previous surgical procedures or cholesteatomas; fixation from otosclerosis, cholesteatomas, or congenital malformations; and dislocations caused by trauma. Surgical reconstruction procedures, with the insertion of partial or total ossicular replacement prostheses, help restore conductive hearing. Patients who undergo these delicate procedures have significant hearing deficits and requi

The aim of the study was to monitor difficulties being experienced by community nurses when removing suprapubic catheters in 94 patients living in two area health services in Sydney. The study identified one catheter brand (Simpla) that was associated with more pain and bleeding for patients, and increased difficulties in removal for the nurses. It was found that muscle relaxant medications taken by patients contributed significantly in ease of catheter removal. In over 50% of all-silicone catheters surveyed, there was evidence of hysteresis leading to balloon cuffing on deflation. This phenom
