PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize the injuries involving periorbital region in our severely burned patients.
METHOD: A 2 years retrospective study was conducted with a total of 210 severe burns admissions. Periorbital burn injuries (all produced in association with facial injuries) were encountered in 126 patients, representing the study group that was further analyzed for multiple parameters: demographics, mechanism of injury, TBSA (total body surface area), burn depth, inhalation injury, need for intubation and mechanical ventilation. The presence and severity of ocular injuries wer

BACKGROUND: About 50 cases of azygos venous system injuries following civilian trauma have been published in current literature. The purpose of our study was to investigate the incidence of these injuries, the causative mechanism and type of trauma, the co-existing injuries, and the mortality rate in our institution.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all trauma patients who were admitted to the surgical department of the General Hospital of Rethymno during an 11-year period. Our study included patients arriving at our institution dead or alive with an azygos venous system injury

PURPOSE: This is a descriptive study of the annual incidence of brain injuries in motor vehicle crashes by type, seat belt use, and crash severity (delta V) using national accident data. The risk for concussion, diffuse axonal injury (DAI), and severe head injury was determined.
METHODS: 1994-2011 NASS-CDS was analyzed to estimate the number of brain injuries annually in nonejected adults involved in motor vehicle crashes. Crashes were grouped by front, side, rear, and rollover, and the effect of belt use was investigated. Light vehicles were included with model year 1994+. Head injuries were

A Physiologic State Severity Classification (PSSC) derived from clustering of 17 cardiorespiratory variables was used to predict cytokine response in critically ill posttrauma patients. The PSSC defined physiologic states: A-State (A), normal stress response; B-State (B), metabolic insufficiency; C2-State (C), respiratory insufficiency. Bayesian analysis of these states defined a probability of death (Pdeath). 416 studies from 60 newly studied multiple trauma patients (70% males, Injury Severity Score = 27.5) were analyzed; 45 (75%) had sepsis (s), 28 (47%) had sepsis-adult respiratory distres

METHODS: We queried our Trauma Quality Improvement Program registry for patients who presented between 6/1/2011 and 9/1/2015 with severe (injury severity score (ISS)>15) blunt traumatic injury during anticoagulant use. Patients were then grouped into those prescribed warfarin and patients prescribed any of the available novel Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOAC) medications. We excluded severe (AIS≧4) head injuries.
RESULTS: There were no differences between DOAC and warfarin groups in terms of age, gender mean ISS, median hospital or intensive care unit lengths of stay, complication proportions

INTRODUCTION: With an incidence of less than 0.2% of all pediatric fractures, pelvic ring injuries are rare. Historically they were conservatively treated, but because malunion and long-term morbidity are associated with unstable injuries, a trend towards operative treatment can be observed. The purpose was to determine clinical and radiographic outcomes following these complex pediatric pelvic ring injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This Level IV retrospective analysis was completed at a private orthopaedic practice in association with a Level One teaching trauma center. There were 33 children

BACKGROUND: Forty percent of critically ill trauma patients will develop an infectious complication. Pneumonia is the most common cause of death of trauma patients surviving their initial insult. We previously demonstrated that polytrauma (PT), defined as two or more severe injuries in at least two areas of the body, induces emergency hematopoiesis characterized by accelerated myelopoiesis in the bone marrow and increased myeloid cell frequency in the peripheral tissues. We hypothesized that PT alone induces priming of neutrophils, resulting in hyperactivation upon secondary exposure to bacter

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that distinct extremity injuries are associated with worse outcome following major trauma. The aim of the present study was to determine epidemiological data of extremity injuries in multiple trauma patients with respect to prevalence, injury pattern, specific mechanisms of injury and their impact on mortality.
METHODS: The Trauma Register of the German Society for Trauma Surgery anonymously documents data on critically injured patients since 1993. Trauma cases documented between 2002 and 2009, older than 16 years of age and with an ISS ≥ 16 were di

Specific features and outcomes of wounds with a traumatic weapon of self-defense "Osa" were analyzed in 24 patients. Mean age of the wounded was from 21 to76 years. In 20 patients there was a single wound, in 4 patients it was multiple, in 7--blunt, in 12--perforating and 5 patients had gutter wounds. All the patients were treated according to the principles of field military surgery. Five patients had severe wounds: penetrating fracture of the skull (2 of them died), fracture of the shoulder (1 case), injury of the main artery (1 case), of the pleura (1 case). The wounds were closed up by pri

INTRODUCTION: Although gunshot and stab wounds are a common cause of self-inflicted injury, very little is understood about this mechanism of injury. The aim of this study was to characterise the epidemiology and outcomes of patients who injured themselves with a gun or sharp object.
METHODS: After IRB approval, the LAC+USC Trauma Registry was utilised to identify all patients who sustained a self-inflicted injury caused by firearm (GSW) or stabbing (SW) from 1997 to 2007. Demographic data, injury characteristics, surgical interventions, and outcomes were abstracted and analysed.
RESULTS: Du

The Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus or Selenarctos thibetanus), also known as the Tibetan black bear, the Himalayan black bear, or the moon bear is a omnivorous mammal. This animal is declared threatened animal and rarely comes in human contact. Recent decrease in forest area has, however, increased the chances of bear-human interaction, hence causing injuries to humans. There is only one published report in English literature on Himalayan black bear mauling. We present 5 cases referred to our department over a period of 1 year.

BACKGROUND: Terror-related injuries caused by secondary fragments (SF) from explosive devices show a distinctive pattern in severity, distribution, outcomes of assault, and health-system resource use as compared with terror-related penetrating injuries caused by gunshot wounds.
STUDY DESIGN: A case-comparison study conducted in a tertiary university hospital and the only Level I trauma center in the Jerusalem vicinity. During a period of 4 years, over 1,500 casualties of terror-related injuries were treated in one Level I trauma center. The study included 533 patients who were admitted for ho

BACKGROUND: After the introduction of the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in the United States in 1971, deaths and injuries in both adults and children rose dramatically. In 1988, the Consumer's Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and all manufacturers of ATVs signed legally binding "Consent Decrees," designed to decrease the number of ATV-related deaths and injuries, especially in children.
METHODS: This report reviews retrospectively the mechanism of injury as well as the injuries in 51 children caused by ATV crashes during a 5-year period after the signing of the decrees.
RESULTS: Data included ag

The predominant tool used to predict outcomes after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI), in association with the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Impairment Scale (AIS). These measures have evolved based on analyses of large amounts of longitudinal neurological recovery data published in numerous separate studies. This article reviews and synthesizes published data on neurological recovery from multiple sources, only utilizing data in which the sacral sparing definition was applied for determ

BACKGROUND: There have been no large randomised controlled trials to determine whether soccer headgear reduces the incidence or severity of sport-related concussion (SRC) in US high school athletes.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether headgear reduces the incidence or severity (days out from soccer) of SRCs in soccer players.
METHODS: 2766 participants (67% female, age 15.6±1.2) (who undertook 3050 participant years) participated in this cluster randomised trial. Athletes in the headgear (HG) group wore headgear during the season, while those in the no headgear (NoHG) group did not. Sta

BACKGROUND: Recent observational studies have shown an association between gabapentinoid anticonvulsants and greater motor recovery after spinal cord injury. There is preclinical evidence to suggest that other anticonvulsants, such as sodium channel blockers, may also confer beneficial effects.
PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to determine if non-gabapentinoid anticonvulsants were associated with neurological recovery after acute, traumatic spinal cord injury.
METHODS: This was an observational cohort study using data from the Sygen clinical trial. The primary outcome was total moto
