[2 cases with unusual lid-jaw co-movements].

General review of the literature makes it apparent that there exist various combinations of associated movements between cranial nerves. Most of them involve four of nerves, the oculomotor, the abducens, the facial, and the motor potion of the trigeminal nerve. We report two patients in whom left upper eyelids produced peculior up and down movements in accompany with mastication. The one was a 9-year-old female who had shown left eye-lid retraction since 3 months; the other, a 4-year-old male, had produced the synkinesis one year since. Either children showed contraction of left palpebral leva

A comparison of the postnatal development of muscle-spindle and periodontal-ligament neurons in the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus of the rat.

The trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) is known to include primary afferent neurons of jaw muscle spindles (MS neurons) and periodontal ligament receptors (PL neurons). The aim of this study was to clarify the postnatal development of Vmes neurons by comparing MS neurons with PL neurons using horseradish peroxidase labeling. We measured somal diameter and somal shape of MS and PL neurons in rats from postnatal day (P)7 to P70. No significant changes were seen between postnatal day P7 and P70 in somal diameter or somal shape of MS neurons. Conversely, PL neurons showed a larger somal diame

Structure-function relationships in the rat brainstem subnucleus interpolaris: VI. Cervical convergence in cells deafferented at birth and a potential primary afferent substrate.

Possible substrates for peripheral injury-induced receptive field (RF) changes were assessed in the trigeminal (V) subnucleus interpolaris (SpVi). In adult rats with infraorbital nerve section at birth, 449 cells were studied ipsilateral to the lesion by using electrophysiological methods. Of these, 33 (7.4%) had RFs that included facial vibrissae, guard hairs, and skin, as well as ipsilateral regions normally innervated by cervical primary afferents (ear, neck, shoulder, arm, forepaw). Such non-V convergence was never seen in 373 normal SpVi cells or in 641 V ganglion cells ipsilateral to the

Mecp2 deficiency induces dysphagia in a preclinical model of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is an x-linked genetic neurological disorder primarily caused by mutations in the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. This progressive neurodevelopmental condition hinders patients' ability to breathe and eat normally. It remains unclear how Mecp2 deficiency leads to the high prevalence of dysphagia and aspiration pneumonia observed in individuals with Rett syndrome. This study aims to determine the effects of Mecp2 deficiency on swallow-related neuromuscular mechanisms that contribute to dysphagia in Rett syndrome. Swallow-related submental complex duration and amplitude

Distribution of mRNA for vanilloid receptor subtype 1 (VR1), and VR1-like immunoreactivity, in the central nervous system of the rat and human.

The cloned vanilloid receptor VR1 has attracted recent attention as a molecular integrator of painful stimuli on primary sensory neurons. The existence of vanilloid-sensitive neurons in the brain is, however, controversial. In this study, we have used an antibody and a complementary RNA probe to explore the distribution of neurons that express VR1 in rat and in certain areas of human brain. In the rat, we observed VR1-expressing neurons throughout the whole neuroaxis, including all cortical areas (in layers 3 and 5), several members of the limbic system (e.g., hippocampus, central amygdala, an

[Effect of stimulation of the tooth pulp on gastrointestinal motility in rabbits].

Effects of electrical stimulation of the inciser tooth pulp on the gastrointestinal motility were investigated in the rabbit anesthetized with urethane and chloralose. Pulpal Stimulation caused an excitatory or an inhibitory effect in the gastric body and antrum and the ducodenum. After bilateral splanchnicotomy the excitatory response to the pulpal stimulation was reinforced or the inhibitory response converted to the excitatory response. An additional cervical vagotomy abolished the excitatory and inhibitory response. Atropine diminished the spontaneous efferent discharges of vagal gastric b

Excitatory Impact of Dental Occlusion on Dorsal Motor Nucleus of Vagus.

Neurons in the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vme) have axons that branch peripherally to innervate the orofacial region and project centrally to several motor nuclei in brainstem. The dorsal motor nucleus of vagus nerve (DMV) resides in the brainstem and takes a role in visceral motor function such as pancreatic exocrine secretion. The present study aimed to demonstrate the presence of Vme-DMV circuit, activation of which would elicit a trigeminal neuroendocrine response. A masticatory dysfunctional animal model termed unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) model created by disturbing the den

Persistent Fos protein expression after orofacial deep or cutaneous tissue inflammation in rats: implications for persistent orofacial pain.

This study was designed to systematically examine the effects of persistent orofacial tissue injury on prolonged neuronal activation in the trigeminal nociceptive pathways by directly comparing the effects of orofacial deep vs. cutaneous tissue inflammation on brainstem Fos protein expression, a marker of neuronal activation. Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) was injected unilaterally into the rat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or perioral (PO) skin to produce inflammation in deep or cutaneous tissues, respectively. Rats were perfused 2 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, or 10 days following CFA injection

Mapping of phenytoin-inducible cytochrome P450 immunoreactivity in the mouse central nervous system.

The distribution of phenytoin-inducible cytochrome P450 in non-treated mouse brain and spinal cord was analysed immunohistochemically using polyclonal antibodies against phenytoin-induced mouse cerebral microsomal P450. This P450 protein was proved in Ouchterlony [Volk B. et al. (1988) Neurosci. Lett. 84, 219-224], Western blot, and immunohistochemical analyses to be reactive to the specific antibodies and an IgG fraction raised against phenobarbital-induced rat liver microsomal P450IIB1. The phenytoin-induced P450 is designated P450IIB1* because immunologically it is comparable with P450IIB1;

Age-related degeneration of the serotoninergic fibers in the zitter rat brain.

The serotonin neuron system was studied using immunohistochemical and neurochemical techniques in zitter mutant rats aged 1-14 months, which are characterized by abnormal metabolism of superoxides. The morphology of the serotoninergic neuron system and the serotonin level in the zitter rat were compared to those of age-matched Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Up to age 4 month, the density and distribution of serotoninergic fibers in the zitter rat brain were similar to those of control rats. However, several serotoninergic fibers with abnormal morphology, characterized by swollen varicosities, were

Evaluation of the Effects of Eye Drops for Dry Eyes on Neuronal Pain Receptors in a Primary Culture Model of Trigeminal Ganglion Cells.

Background: Dry eye disease is a multifactorial ocular surface disorder characterized by tear film instability, inflammation, and neurosensory abnormalities that can lead to corneal pain and discomfort. In this study, we evaluated the effects of specific eye drops for dry eyes on neuronal pain receptors to gain insight into the mechanisms underlying corneal nerve pain in patients with dry eyes using a primary cell culture model of murine trigeminal ganglion cells. Methods: Trigeminal ganglia were obtained from wild-type postnatal day 7-10 mice. Primary cultures were prepared using the cell sus

Long-range GABAergic projections from the nucleus of the solitary tract.

The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) plays a crucial role in integrating peripheral information regarding visceral functions. Glutamate decarboxylase 2 (GAD2) inhibitory neurons are abundant in the NTS, and are known to form local and short-range projections within the NTS and nearby hindbrain areas. Here we performed whole-brain mapping of outputs from GAD2 neurons in the NTS using cell-type specific viral labeling together with ultrahigh-speed 3D imaging at 1-μm resolution. In addition to well-known targets of NTS GAD2 neurons including the principle sensory nucleus of the trigeminal (PSV

Embryological origin for autism: developmental anomalies of the cranial nerve motor nuclei.

The underlying brain injury that leads to autism has been difficult to identify. The diagnostic criteria of the disease are not readily associated with any brain region or system, nor are they mimicked by vascular accidents, tumors, or degenerative neurological diseases occurring in adults. Fortuitously, a recent report of autism induced by thalidomide exposure provides evidence that the disease originates by an injury at the time of closure of the neural tube. The human data suggest that the initiating lesion includes the motor cranial nerve nuclei. To test this hypothesis, we first examined

A dual effect of sympathetic nerve stimulation on jaw muscle spindles.

In anaesthetized and paralyzed rabbits, electrical stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve at physiological frequencies induces in jaw muscle spindle afferents a short-latency decrease or suppression of discharge. This effect is very stereotyped in pattern and is attributed to direct sympathetic innervation of spindles. It is mediated by preganglionic S1-S2 sympathetic fiber groups. A longer-latency facilitatory effect follows, probably vasomotor in origin and mediated by S3-S4 groups. Both responses are eliminated by administration of alpha-adrenergic blocking agents. The latencies, pat

Morphologic alterations in Macaca mulatta following destruction of the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve.

In two adolescent male Macaca mulatta monkeys, small unilateral electrolytic lesions were produced in the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve. The side contralateral to the muscle paralysis served as the control side. The animals were killed 130 and 300 days postoperatively. One animal (animal A) was prepared as a dry skull preparation. Alterations in craniofacial form were noted clinically in both animals and included paralysis and atrophy of the muscles of mastication on the lesion side and mandibular asymmetry. In animal A (300 days postoperative survival), alterations in form included de

Behavioral and neurophysiological correlates of nociception in an animal model of photokeratitis.

Ocular exposure to ultraviolet irradiation (UVR) induces photokeratitis, a common environmental concern that inflames ocular tissues and causes pain. The central neural mechanisms that contribute to the sensory aspects of photokeratitis after UVR are not known. In awake male rats, ocular surface application of hypertonic saline evoked eye wipe behavior that was enhanced 2-3 days after UVR and returned to control levels by 7 days. Similarly, under isoflurane anesthesia, hypertonic saline-evoked activity of ocular neurons in superficial laminae at the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis/cervical (Vc/

Trigeminal uptake and clearance of inhaled manganese chloride in rats and mice.

Inhaled manganese (Mn) can enter the olfactory bulbs via the olfactory epithelium, and can then be further transported trans-synaptically to deeper brain structures. In addition to olfactory neurons, the nasal cavity is innervated by the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve that projects to the spinal trigeminal nucleus. Direct uptake and transport of inhaled metal particles in the trigeminal system has not been investigated previously. We studied the uptake, deposition, and clearance of soluble Mn in the trigeminal system following nose-only inhalation of environmentally relevant concen

Effects of neonatal infraorbital lesions upon central trigeminal primary afferent projections in rat and hamster.

Transganglionic and anterograde horseradish peroxidase transport was used to evaluate the central projections of undamaged trigeminal (V) nerve branches in adult rats and hamsters subjected to transection of the infraorbital nerve and to cauterization of the vibrissae follicles at birth. In rats, deafferented regions of the V brainstem nuclear complex did not receive abnormal projections from undamaged mandibular sensory afferents. Undamaged ophthalmic-maxillary fibers also failed to terminate heavily in the region deafferented by the neonatal infraorbital lesions. In the hamster, on the other

Locus Coeruleus Dysfunction and Trigeminal Mesencephalic Nucleus Degeneration: A Cue for Periodontal Infection Mediated Damage in Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading neurodegenerative disease with deteriorating cognition as its main clinical sign. In addition to the clinical history, it is characterized by the presence of two neuropathological hallmark lesions; amyloid-beta (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), identified in the brain at post-mortem in specific anatomical areas. Recently, it was discovered that NFTs occur initially in the subcortical nuclei, such as the locus coeruleus in the pons, and are said to spread from there to the cerebral cortices and the hippocampus. This contrasts with the prior acceptanc
