Restriction of nutrients to pathogens (nutritional immunity) is a critical innate immune response mechanism that operates when pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis have the potential to evade humoral immunity. Tuberculosis is of growing concern for zoological collections worldwide and is well-illustrated by infections of Asian and African elephants, where tuberculosis is difficult to diagnose. Here, we investigated hematological parameters and iron deposition in liver, lung, and spleen of three Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. For reference pu

Tuberculosis is one of the most widespread diseases, occurring in more than eight million persons, and about three million die annually of tuberculosis. In industrialized countries, the incidence has increased significantly over the last 10 years. HIV infection is a main factor leading to this increase. Outbreaks of nosocomial tuberculosis among patients and healthcare workers have been reported. Tuberculosis is often caused by multidrug-resistant bacilli in patients with HIV infection. Physicians must be aware of this danger and careful adherence to guidelines is required to prevent further n

In patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), it has been observed and increase in the incidence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Recently, the presence of abdominal tuberculous abscesses has been described as a manifestation of this form of tuberculous disease. However, hepatic abscesses by Mycobacterium tuberculosis are rare among patients infected by the HIV. In the literature, just two patients with this type of abscesses have been described as a form of presentation of the infection by the HIV. In this paper, we present the case of one patient with positive serology to th

Whipple's disease and pulmonary and lymph node tuberculosis have been diagnosed in a 70 year-old man hospitalized for weight loss and fever. The tuberculous or Whipple's disease-related nature of associated non-necrotizing epithelioid hepatic granulomas could not be determined. The existence of cellular immune defects in Whipple's disease could explain the association with tuberculosis, which has not been previously reported in the literature.

The paper presents the results of a combined biochemical study of 111 patients suffering from recently diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis combined with chronic opisthorchiasis (main group) and 36 tuberculosis patients without infestation (control group). It was established that the mixed abnormality was significantly more often accompanied by hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. The thymol and mercury-chloride sublimate tests produced positive results in 22.5 and 9.0% of the main group patients, respectively. Increased bilirubin content and alanine and aspartate aminotransferase activities were

Hepatic toxicity is the most serious adverse effect of anti-tuberculosis drugs. This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of silymarin as a hepatoprotective herbal agent. In a randomized double blind clinical trial, 70 new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were divided into two groups. The intervention group was assigned to receive silymarin and the control group received placebo. Tuberculosis was treated by classic regimen consisting isoniazid, rifampin, pyrazinamide and ethambutol. No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups concerning the frequency of drug

Liver necropsy from patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus was analyzed in 117 cases. Wide ranges of opportunistic infections were recorded in 47%. Cryptococcosis (21.4%) was the most outstanding infection, followed by tuberculosis (16.2%), cytomegalovirus (5.1%) and penicillosis (3.4%). Non-specific alterations of the liver tissues included fatty steatosis (49.6%), fibrosis (55.6%), portal inflammation and reactive hepatitis. Cases of chronic active and chronic passive hepatitis and one case of hepatocellular carcinoma were reported. In the infected liver, predominant pathologica

During 1984-5 this continuing survey showed that 41 infections occurred in the staff of 193 laboratories, representing 23,043.5 person years of exposure. The community was the probable source of two cases each of hepatitis A and B, one of tuberculosis, two of campylobacter enteritis, and 12 of Norwalk viral diarrhoea. Occupational exposure was the probable cause of six hepatitis B infections (affecting haematology, biochemistry, and microbiology staff), three of tuberculosis (affecting mortuary and morbid anatomy workers), seven shigella, three salmonella (including one typhoid) and one pseudo

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a common complication of tuberculosis treatment. We utilised data from the REMoxTB clinical trial to describe the incidence of predisposing factors and the natural history in patients with liver enzyme levels elevated in response to tuberculosis treatment.
METHODS: Patients received either standard tuberculosis treatment (2EHRZ/4HR), or a 4-month regimen in which moxifloxacin replaced either ethambutol (isoniazid arm, 2MHRZ/2MHR) or isoniazid (ethambutol arm, 2EMRZ/2MR). Hepatic enzymes were measured at 0, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 17 weeks and as clinica

Adverse drug reactions are not unusual during Anti-Tubercular Therapy (ATT). One of the common complications of anti-tubercular treatment is drug induced hepatitis and renal insufficiency has also been reported. Renal failure and/or hepatitis encountered during treatment of tuberculosis can have varied aetiologies: drug induced, concomitant viral infection, pre-existing co-morbidities or a combination of these. Since, hepatitis and/or renal insufficiency can be life threatening a prompt diagnosis is warranted, where drugs should be kept as one of the important cause. Identifying the drug helps

BACKGROUND: With the introduction of more potent immunosuppressive agents in inflammatory bowel disease, prevention of opportunistic infections has become necessary by introducing screening programs. Prevalence of the most important infectious agents may vary in different geographical areas. The aim of our study was to assess the immune status for hepatitis B, varicella, mononucleosis, and cytomegalovirus infection together with the determination of the hepatitis C and tuberculosis status in Southern Italy.
METHODS: Prevalence of latent tuberculosis, together with serology of hepatitis B and

The results of liver biopsy in 100 patients with tuberculosis are reported. In 8 patients, biopsy only occurred secondarily, during liver disease which appeared during antituberculous treatment. In five cases, the association of rifamycin and isoniazid was probably responsible and the mild histological signs noted suggested a favourable course after stopping one of the drugs or simply reducing the dose. The 3 other patients had virus hepatitis and biopsy was of prognostic interest by revealing the onset of post-hepatic cirrhosis. In 92 cases, liver biopsy was carried out before treatment. In 3

The muramidase content of reactive cells in the lesions of human foreign body reactions, lepromatous and tuberculoid leprosy, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and granulomatous hepatitis, was assessed using specific anti-human muramidase antiserum and a peroxidase-anti-peroxidase marker system. Epithelioid and giant cells in sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, granulomatous hepatitis, and tuberculoid leprosy all showed the presence of muramidase in their cytoplasm. The muramidase content of macrophages in foreign body reactions and lepromatous leprosy varied and most multinucleate cells in these lesions gave

The efficiency of the use of the natural drug Galstena (Richard Bittner GmbH) was experimentally and clinically studied on a model of damage induced by toxic doses of tuberculostatics (rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide) in laboratory rats and in patients with different forms of pulmonary tuberculosis and with hepatitis caused by specific antituberculous drug therapy, who were treated at the Clinic of Phthiziology. Galstena was found to have marked hepatoprotective properties and to be able to prevent renal and pancreatic disorders. The drug also showed an antioxidative activity. The use of G

Isolated hepatic tuberculosis presenting as a mass either with or without fever can be confused with hepatocellular carcinoma. Clinical examination and laboratory investigations are not specific. Radiological investigations such as ultrasound and computed tomography cannot confirm the diagnosis; hence it is vital to always make an effort to demonstrate presence of acid fast bacilli in aspirated pus or necrotic material from a liver mass. We present a case of 50 years old male patient with HIV/AIDS who presented with non-specific symptoms without fever, clinically with hepatomegaly mimicking he
