INTRODUCTION: The concomitant unexpected arrival of a breast tuberculosis and cerebral tuberculomas to a same immunocompetent patient has not been ever described in the literature.
EXEGESIS: We report the case of an non-HIV-infected woman who presented a pulmonary, breast tuberculosis and intracranial tuberculomas. Investigation for acid-fast bacilli in sputum and cerebrospinal fluid was negative. The patient received an antituberculous therapy for 15 months, which led to the disappearance of the cerebral lesions.
CONCLUSION: Our case was particular by the affected organs, the absence of imm

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is the major opportunistic infection of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) on a worldwide basis. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to illustrate and review the spectrum of imaging findings associated with pulmonary TB in patients with AIDS and to describe important factors that may complicate the radiographic follow-up of patients being treated for TB.

The present study examines whether pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) has an annual seasonal pattern. A mathematical model is also obtained to forecast the pattern of incidence. The data for the study are the cases of PTB reported throughout Spain, published in the Epidemiology Bulletin by the Carlos III Health Center of the Spanish Ministry of Health in a 26-year period, 1971-1996. The analytical results show that the low rates in tuberculosis notifications over the period 1971-1981 have changed, halting in 1982 and reversing with high incidence from 1983 onwards. An annual seasonal pattern was als

Surgery in pulmonary tuberculosis in one form or other gives good results. Indications for surgery include drug resistant pulmonary tuberculosis, massive recurrent haemoptysis, post-tuberculosis bronchiectasis or destroyed lung, empyema with or without bronchopleural fistula and for diagnostic purposes. In all cases a clear indication for surgery is mandatory. Processes of surgery include lung resection, thoracoplasty, decortication, thoracotomy and biopsy, thoracoscopy and ib resection for pleurocutaneous flap procedures. Adequate postoperative management is very important. Complications like

Estimates of the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in developing countries are based on case reporting from local health laboratories or the annual risk of tuberculin skin test conversion. Because these methods are problematic, the authors used a multiple case ascertainment method to estimate the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis from 1989 to 1993 in a Peruvian shantytown of 34,000 inhabitants. Two methods, face-to-face interview of all local inhabitants and examination of local laboratory smear records, were used for case gathering. The number of missed cases was estimated by capture-reca

The clinical epidemiology of pulmonary paragonimiasis and tuberculosis was investigated in a known endemic municipality of Sorsogon, Philippines. Records of diagnosed tuberculosis patients on treatment and follow up at the local Rural Health Unit over a two year period from 1993 to 1994 were reviewed to provide an overview of pulmonary tuberculosis in the area, specifically to describe the population at risk, the basis for diagnosis and the proportion of case notification who were sputum negative. Patients from the same group of individuals as well as undiagnosed tuberculosis patients with pro

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to describe the CT findings of pulmonary tuberculosis in children and to define indications for the use of CT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT findings in 41 consecutive children with confirmed tuberculosis were retrospectively analyzed by two radiologists. Chest radiographs and medical records were also reviewed to determine whether additional information provided by CT scans had altered clinical management of the disease.
RESULTS: Mediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathy was seen in 34 patients (83%). In 29 of these patients, enlarged nodes had low-attenuatio

Adrenocortical function was studied in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and the findings compared with those in healthy subjects. Plasma cortisol levels in newly diagnosed patients were appreciably higher than in the healthy subjects (P less than 0.001). A normal (positive) response to ACTH (tetracosactrin) stimulation was observed in 35 (97%) of 36 healthy subjects, 15 (56%) of 27 newly diagnosed patients with tuberculosis and 5 (42%) of 12 chronic cases (i.e. those who had had the disease for more than 3 years); the difference between the healthy subjects and the two groups of tuberculos

The results of experimental studies using a phantom suggest that the calculation of CT values pulmonary nodular shadows is not so reliable. The CT images of bronchogenous spread type tuberculous lesions reveal a regularity that corresponds to the bronchial branching pattern, called centrilobular shadows. On the other hand, hematogenous spread type lesions (miliary tuberculosis) distribute randomly regardless of bronchial branching. Centrilobular shadows, lobular shadows and multilobular shadows are the fundamental pattern of pulmonary tuberculosis on CT images. Shadows showing broncho-vascular

Pulmonary tuberculosis produces a broad spectrum of radiographic abnormalities. During the primary phase of the disease these include pulmonary consolidation (50%), which often involves the middle or lower lobes or the anterior segment of an upper lobe; cavitation (29%) or pneumatocele formation (12%); segmental or lobar atelectasis (18%); pleural effusion (24%); hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy (35%); disseminated miliary disease (6%); and a normal chest radiograph (15%). During the postprimary phase of the disease, common abnormalities include exudative and/or fibroproductive parenchyma

A very brief review is given of the pathology of primary pulmonary tuberculosis. Numerous characteristic, but not pathognomonic, radiological appearances of primary pulmonary tuberculosis are briefly described and some of them are illustrated. The final diagnosis, however, depends on correlating the radiological picture with the clinical picture and special investigations.

Finger clubbing was observed in 21% of 70 adult Nigerian patients presenting with pulmonary tuberculosis. These patients had a significantly higher incidence of haemoptysis and they also showed a significantly lower body weight and serum albumin than those without clubbing. Their chest x-rays revealed larger cavities and at 2 months the mortality of the patients with finger clubbing (40%) was very much higher than of those without (5.5%). It is suggested that finger clubbing is of value in assessing patients with pulmonary tuberculosis because it helps to identify those with severe destructive
