Bladder or urethral calculi in 50 patients were effectively fragmented and removed per-urethrally using an ultrasonic lithotriptor with the probe vibrating at 30,000 implulses/s. In adults, local anaesthesia was employed and the operation performed as an out-patient procedure. The method has the advantages over others discussed in that a small (23 F) sheath is used and that damage to the bladder or urethra by the probe is avoided. Using a newer, modified sheath resembling that for punch prostatectomy, larger stones can be fragmented by engaging the stone in the fenestrum of the sheath.

Abdominal ultrasonography often enables to display the fluid collection of an abcess or haematoma. This type of diagnostic procedure is most useful in a post-operative period. The intestinal gases which stop the ultrasonic beam may be responsible for diagnostic failures. Positive results, which are the most frequent, are never the less precious to assess and decide a treatment policy.

The ultrasonic appearances of the kidney in images which contain grey shades corresponding to the detected echo-pulse heights have been examined. These "greyscale" images were obtained using a standard Nuclear Enterprises Diasonograph 4102B and a Varian 620/L digital computer interfaced to this Diasonograph. The computer was used to analyse and display the ultrasonograms with 16 grey shades. Both kidneys of 36 subjects were examined and compared with IVU findings. This group included patients with normal kidneys, polycystic kidneys, hydronephrosis, glomerulonephritis and neoplastic tumours. It
