OBJECTIVES: To present an update on the status of poliomyelitis worldwide, number of cases per year, regions most affected by the disease, vaccines currently available, their risks and benefits, monovalent vaccine use, risks of disseminating a mutant virus in the community, progress that has been made in terms of worldwide eradication and the World Health Organization's (WHO) proposals in this transition period between global eradication and the post-eradication period.

Meningitis and sepsis caused by serogroup B meningococcus are two severe diseases that still cause significant mortality. To date there is no universal vaccine that prevents these diseases. In this work, five antigens discovered by reverse vaccinology were expressed in a form suitable for large-scale manufacturing and formulated with adjuvants suitable for human use. The Warsaw Transplant Center comprises 3 programs for transplantation of kidney, pancreas and liver. At the end of 2005, 3,616 kidney, 131 simultaneous pancreas kidney and 592 liver transplants had been performed. Pattern of infertility cases attending the gynaecologic out patient clinic of Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu Nigeria is presented. The incidence of infertility was found to be 14.8% with a mean duration of 3.38 +/- 1.65 years. Secondary infertility predominated with 78.3% incidence. Universal grammar (UG) is a list of innate constraints that specify the set of grammars that can be learned by the child during primary language acquisition. UG of the human brain has been shaped by evolution. Evolution requires variation. Hence, we have to postulate and study variation of UG. The brain from 98 consecutive patients with the clinical diagnosis of dementia were examined at autopsy in a standardized fashion. We review our experience with 27 cases of pulmonary and meningeal cryptococcosis at the University Hospital, (Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia) where this is the most common cause of adult meningitis in patients without debilitating illnesses. Heart transplantation offered satisfactory outcomes in carefully selected patients with end stage congestive heart failure treated at our institution from 1990-1996. BACKGROUND: We reviewed our experience with isolated lung transplantation at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, Ill. From April 1990 through June 1992, 33 lung transplantations for end-stage pulmonary disease were performed (30 single lung, three bilateral single lung).
