We studied the immune system in 18 cases of Behçet's disease with ocular involvement. The proportion of CD69+ cells in CD4+ cells was significantly higher in patients with active uveoretinitis than in normal controls (p < 0.01). After OKT-3 stimulation of cultured cells, the proportion was significantly increased in controls (p < 0.01) but not in patients. Fas-ligand positive cells in CD8+ cells in patients did not increase after OKT-3 stimulation. Thus, the T cells in patients were in an activated state in vivo but were not further activated by OKT-3 stimulation. Cultured lymphocytes of patie

The commonest cause of visual morbidity in patients with posterior uveitis is cystoid macular oedema, which usually responds to immunosuppressive treatment. However, a small group of patients do not have a satisfactory visual outcome despite apparently adequate therapy. In a retrospective study of 345 angiograms of 135 patients with active non-occlusive retinal vasculitis 12 patients were identified by independent masked review as showing macular ischaemia on their fluorescein angiograms. Four patients had Behçet's disease, 4 sarcoidosis, and 4 idiopathic retinal vasculitis. Follow-up of these…

A vitrectomy was performed in 30 eyes suffering from different forms of uveitis. An improvement of visual acuity was obtained in 29 cases and was explained by removal of vitreous haze and/or of the cataract, but not by the improvement of the inflammatory process.

This paper presents for the first time documented evidence, clinical details, and photographic illustrations of metipranolol-associated granulomatous anterior uveitis in 26 eyes of 15 patients being treated for glaucoma. There were 56 episodes of granulomatous anterior uveitis, all associated with large (mutton-fat) keratic precipitates, flare, cells, and 'white eyes' (except in seven episodes). In 30 (53.6%) of these episodes there was loss of control of intraocular pressure. Metipranolol 0.6% was implicated in 54 of the 56 episodes and metipranolol 0.3% in the remaining two. Fifty-one other …

The authors describe the clinical picture of various forms of anterior and posterior uveitis associated with Reiter's disease in 28 patients; both eyes were involved in 11 of these. The data of laboratory tests for ophthalmic and urogenital chlamydiasis in these patients are presented; a relationship between uveitis clinical forms and Chlamydia detection rate in the conjunctiva and urethra has been revealed. Different pathogenesis of uveitis clinical forms is discussed and the necessity of their differentiated therapy emphasized.

The indirect fluorescent antibody technique was used to study the relationship between endogenous uveitis and toxoplasma infection. The seropositive rates of toxoplasma antibody in healthy people, farmers and patients with endogenous uveitis were 10.7%, 15.2% and 30.8% respectively. Compared with the healthy people, the infection rate in uveitic patients was significantly higher (P less than 0.01). The odds ratio of toxoplasma infection in endogenous uveitic patients was 3.72. The results suggest that toxoplasma infection is an infectious cause of endogenous uveitis.

Three patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis and uveitis were studied. The uveitis presented as inflammation of the anterior segment of the eye (iridocyclitis) and was characterized by large keratic precipitates and posterior synechiae, consistent with a granulomatous iridocyclitis. Clinical and laboratory evidence militated against other central nervous system diseases often associated with uveitis including neurosarcoidosis, Behçet's syndrome, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, neurosyphilis, and tuberculosis. Further attention should be directed to the possibility of granulomatous …

Twenty-six patients (39 eyes) with retinal neovascularisation associated with ocular inflammation were identified from the retinal vasculitis clinic at St Thomas's Hospital. Eight patients had sarcoidosis, seven patients Behçet's disease, and 11 had idiopathic retinal vasculitis. Twenty-three patients had required systemic therapy to control the inflammation and 11 patients received laser photocoagulation. Fluorescein angiography showed significant capillary closure in 15 eyes and diffuse microvascular leakage in the remaining 24 eyes. All patients had posterior vitreous detachment. The visual
