Communication lessons learned from the 2017 measles-rubella campaign in India: perspectives from vaccine decision-makers.

In 2017, to reduce the burden of measles and rubella, a nation-wide measles-rubella campaign was launched in India. Despite detailed planning efforts that involved many stakeholders, vaccine refusal arose in several communities during the campaign. As strategic health communication and promotion is critical in any vaccine campaign, we sought to document lessons learned from the 2017 MR campaign from a strategic health communication and promotion perspective to capture lessons learned. To inform future campaigns, we conducted in-depth interviews through a perspective that is not usually capture

Death from COVID-19 of a 57-year-old man refusing medical care and self-medicating with ivermectin.

Since December 2019, the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus causes COVID-19 disease worldwide, which occurs mainly in unvaccinated elderly and polymorbid patients with a more severe course and increased risk of complications and death. Vaccination and specific therapy for the disease using mainly new antiviral drugs are the way to reduce the number of infected, hospitalized patients with a more severe course. We present a case report of an at-risk polymorbid 57-year-old man who refused vaccination and standard treatment for COVID-19 disease based on misinformation from the community. He self-treated h

Assessing dengue knowledge, attitudes and preventive practices in France and Italy: A cross-sectional study using participatory surveillance cohorts.

The dengue virus, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, causes an estimated 100-390 million infections annually worldwide. With no treatment available, mitigation and prevention involve reducing mosquito breeding and limiting feeding opportunities. Due to changing climate conditions, Aedes mosquitoes are increasingly established in Europe causing more local cases. Thus, understanding population knowledge, attitudes, and practices in areas where dengue is an emerging threat is necessary for effective prevention. We designed a cross-sectional survey collecting knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about

Navigating vaccination in pregnancy: Qualitative study in 21 ethnically diverse pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination during pregnancy is crucial for safeguarding maternal and neonatal health, but vaccination rates remain suboptimal, especially in women from Black and Asian ethnic minorities. We explored the perspectives and decision-making processes of pregnant women regarding uptake of the three recommended vaccines in pregnancy: Influenza, Pertussis (whooping cough) and COVID-19. We also explored women's attitudes to taking part in vaccine trials during pregnancy and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to obtain information on vaccines. METHODS: In 2023, we conducted in-depth t

Resurgence of pertussis in Slovak Republic and surrounding Central European countries.

Bordetella pertussis, the pathogen responsible for a highly contagious respiratory disease, utilizes a broad spectrum of virulence factors that results in subacute or chronic cough. We conducted an analysis of pertussis incidence and reported cases in the European region from 2000 to 2024. We analyzed the potential factors contributing to the rise in pertussis incidence despite high vaccination rates. In 2024, the Slovak Republic and surrounding Central European countries (the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Ukraine) have seen a significant increase in pertussis incidence. The resu

A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Community Perceptions of Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines at Turtle Creek Primary Care Center.

BACKGROUND: Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 vaccination rates are subpar across the US, especially in racial and/or socioeconomic minority groups who are understudied in public health literature. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this mixed-methods study was to elucidate attitudes of patients at the Turtle Creek Primary Care Center, a clinic that cares for ∼70% non-white patients, towards flu and COVID-19 vaccines, with the goal of establishing vaccine education gaps and increasing vaccine uptake in minority communities. DESIGN/PATIENTS: This study was conducted as a cross-sectional analysis. Authors

Resurgence of Measles in Europe: A Systematic Review on Parental Attitudes and Beliefs of Measles Vaccine.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Europe has experienced a major resurgence of measles in recent years, despite the availability and free access to a safe, effective, and affordable vaccination measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR). The main driver for this is suboptimal vaccine coverage. The three objectives of this study are to synthesize and critically assess parental attitudes and beliefs toward MMR uptake, to develop strategies and policy recommendations to effectively improve MMR vaccine uptake accordingly, and ultimately to identify areas for further research. METHODS: A systematic review

Epidemiologic and laboratory surveillance of the measles outbreak in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, February 2014-April 2015.

A measles outbreak with two epidemic waves involving 4649 probable and laboratory-confirmed cases was recorded in six out of ten cantons of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina between February 2014 and April 2015. The majority of the patients had never received measles vaccination (3115/4649, 67.00%), and the vaccination status of another 23% was unknown (1066/4649). A total of 281 blood samples were tested serologically. Virus detection was performed using 44 nasopharyngeal swabs. About 57% (161/281) of the laboratory-investigated sera were immunoglobulin M positive, and 95% (42/44) of t

Reasons for partial/non-immunization with oral polio vaccine/triple antigen among children under five years.

To identify the reasons for non-immunization/postponing immunization, parents of 615 poliomyelitis (APM) children and 908 children attending the Outpatient Department (OPD) for other ailments were interviewed. A total of 165 (26.9%), 185 (30.1%) and 264 (43%) among APM and 645 (71%), 183 (20.2%) and 80 (8.8%) among OPD children were immunized, partially immunized and unimmunized, respectively. Forty two per cent and 21% among parents of APM and OPD children, respectively in the unimmunized group were unaware of the need for immunization. The other reasons are minor illnesses, lack of interest,

Parental vaccine concerns in Kentucky.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of parents are questioning the safety and necessity of routine childhood immunizations. Locally produced vaccine risk communication materials may be effective in reassuring these parents. However, little is known about specific vaccine safety concerns in the state of Kentucky. METHODS: An Internet-based survey focusing on parental vaccine safety concerns and potential vaccine risk communication strategies was sent to all members of the Kentucky Chapter of the Amerian Academy of Pediatrics. RESULTS: There were 121 respondents who routinely administered childho

Improving health literacy with mumps, measles and rubella (MMR) vaccination: comparison of the readability of MMR patient-facing literature and MMR scientific abstracts.

BACKGROUND: Historically, there have been many factors that have influenced mumps, measles and rubella (MMR) vaccine uptake, including media bias, social/economic determinants, parental education level, deprivation and concerns over vaccine safety. Readability metrics through online tools are now emerging as a means for healthcare professionals to determine the readability of patient-facing vaccine information. The aim of this study was to examine the readability of patient-facing materials describing MMR vaccination, through employment of nine readability and text parameter metrics, and to co

Leaving No One Behind: Interventions and Outcomes of the COVID-19 Vaccine Maximising Uptake Programme.

The devastating impact of COVID-19 on individuals and communities has accelerated the development of vaccines and the deployment of ambitious vaccination programmes to reduce the risks of infection, infection transmission and symptom severity. However, many people delay or refuse to get vaccinated against COVID-19, for many complex reasons. Vaccination programmes that are tailored to address individual and communities' COVID-19 concerns can improve vaccine uptake rates and help achieve the required herd-immunity threshold. The Maximising Uptake Programme has led to the vaccination of 7979 peop

[Efficacy of a flock-specific pseudotuberculosis vaccine in goats].

In a flock with 33 adult goats repeated abscesses due to Pseudotuberculosis occurred. For the owners refused a sanitation program based on testing and removing, the goats were vaccinated with a flock specific, whole-cells lysate vaccine of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Partly simultaneously or 14 days later vaccinations against Clostridiosis (Covexin8) and against Erysipelas (Erysorb plus) were performed at different application sites. After a twofold basal vaccination in a 4 week interval the goats were revaccinated in half year intervals. The local (swelling at the injection site) and

SARS-CoV-2-specific immune responses in elderly and immunosuppressed participants and patients with hematologic disease or checkpoint inhibition in solid tumors: study protocol of the prospective, observational CoCo immune study.

BACKGROUND: Immunocompromised people (ICP) and elderly individuals (older than 80 years) are at increased risk for severe coronavirus infections. To protect against serious infection with SARS-CoV-2, ICP are taking precautions that may include a reduction of social contacts and participation in activities which they normally enjoy. Furthermore, for these people, there is an uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of the vaccination. The COVID-19 Contact (CoCo) Immune study strives to characterize the immune response to COVID-19 vaccination in immunocompromised, elderly people, and patients wit

Exploring Perceptions and Practices Regarding Adult Vaccination against Seasonal Influenza, Tetanus, Pneumococcal Disease, Herpes Zoster and COVID-19: A Mixed-Methods Study in Greece.

We aimed to document vaccination coverage for five vaccines, predictors of each vaccine's uptake and attitudes regarding adult vaccination. Adults visiting four pharmacies were randomly invited to participate during summer 2022. Among 395 participants (mean age 51.2 years, range 19-96), vaccination rates were 78.1% for influenza and 25.8% for herpes zoster (≥60 years old), 64.3% for pneumococcal disease (≥65 years old), 33.1% for tetanus, while 11.4% had received two and 74.8% ≥3 COVID-19 vaccine doses. Half of participants (50.1%) voiced some degree of hesitancy, and 1.3% were refusers. The s

Factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination intentions among adults in the deep South.

The recent approval of several COVID-19 vaccines signals progress toward controlling the pandemic. Although social distancing and masking have been effective, vaccines are an important additional measure of protection to reduce COVID-19 spread. Adequate uptake is essential to reach herd immunity, estimated to be approximately 67%. However, vaccine hesitancy, the fast-tracked nature of the COVID-19 vaccines, and misinformation circulating through various forms of media have contributed to lower vaccination intention than desired. The current research study developed an online survey conducted v

Update on Routine Childhood and Adolescent Immunizations.

Recommendations for routine vaccinations in children and adolescents have changed multiple times in recent years, based on findings in clinical trials, licensure of new vaccines, and evidence of waning immunity. Despite the overwhelming success of vaccinations, vaccine delay and refusal are leading to pockets of vaccine-preventable diseases. Schedules for diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, and acellular pertussis (DTaP); hepatitis A and B; Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib); inactivated poliovirus; varicella; and measles, mumps, and rubella are unchanged. However, since 2008, 13-valent pneumococ
