Effect of septal flash on right ventricular systolic function in left bundle-branch block patients with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction.

A leftward motion of the ventricular septum prior to ejection, known as the septal flash (SF), is frequently observed in patients with left bundle-branch block (LBBB). We investigated whether the abnormal motion of the ventricular septum affects right ventricle (RV) contractile performance in LBBB patients with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Forty-four patients with complete LBBB were selected using standard 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs), with 30 healthy individuals serving as controls. According to the presence of SF, patients with LBBB were allocated to two subgroup

Longitudinal right ventricular function as a predictor of functional capacity in patients with mitral stenosis: an exercise echocardiographic study.

BACKGROUND: The influence of right ventricular (RV) function on exercise capacity has been poorly explored in mitral stenosis (MS). The objective of this study was to assess the determinants of functional status with exercise echocardiography in MS. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients (55 +/- 12 years, 29 female) with MS (1.3 +/- 0.5 cm(2)) underwent an exercise echocardiography (14 patients had previous balloon valvuloplasty). RV function was assessed by tricuspid annulus S-wave velocity (Tric-S) and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE). RESULTS: Tric-S correlated with TAPSE (P = .0

Utility of three-dimensional echocardiography for evaluating right ventricular size and function and ventricular myocardial deformation in repaired tetralogy of fallot.

PURPOSE: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction remains a major long-term complication in patients with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF). While cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is the gold standard for right ventricular (RV) assessment, it is limited by accessibility and cost. Three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE), with its strain imaging capabilities, offers a promising alternative for the serial evaluation of right ventricular (RV) size and function. This study aims to compare RV volumetric and myocardial deformation parameters obtained by 2D and 3D echocardiography (2DE, 3DE) with RV func

Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction as a confounding factor in the assessment of the impact of pulmonary regurgitation on the right ventricular size and function in patients after repair of tetralogy of Fallot.

PURPOSE: To compare right ventricular (RV) size and function between patients with combined pulmonary regurgitation (PR) plus RV outflow tract (RVOT) obstruction (RVOTO) and patients with isolated PR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive individuals with significant PR (PR fraction ≥ 20%) after tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) repair who underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) were included. Patients with additional hemodynamic abnormalities (residual ventricular septal defect, extracardiac shunt, and/or more than mild regurgitation at a valve other than the pulmonary valve) were excluded. Regional dysfunction of the right ventricular outflow tract reduces the accuracy of Doppler tissue imaging assessment of global right ventricular systolic function in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot.

BACKGROUND: The influence of regional right ventricular (RV) dysfunction on the accuracy of Doppler tissue imaging (DTI) assessment of global RV function is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of regional dysfunction of the RV outflow tract (RVOT) on the correlations between RV DTI indices and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) measurements of global RV function in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot. METHODS: Consecutive patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot who underwent echocardiography with DTI of the right ventricle and CMR within 4 weeks of each ot

Right ventricular function in respiratory distress syndrome and subsequent partial liquid ventilation. Homeometric autoregulation in the right ventricle of the newborn animal.

Infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) and subsequent partial liquid ventilation (PLV) cause increased pulmonary vascular resistance, thus raising afterload. In nine newborn lambs the effects of IRDS and subsequent PLV on right (RV) and left ventricular (LV) contractility and systolic pump function were assessed using indices derived from RV and LV pressure-volume relations, obtained by micromanometric and conductance catheters during transient inferior vena cava occlusion. Pulmonary function deteriorated during IRDS with a significant decrease in the ratio of arterial oxygen pressure to

Serial changes in right ventricular function after mitral valve surgery: retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Despite the clinical relevance of right ventricular (RV) function assessed on echocardiography, its predictive utility for patients receiving mitral valve surgery remains uncertain. The primary objectives of this study were to characterize RV function before and after valvular surgery and to establish the diagnostic value of this assessment. METHODS: Echocardiograms were collected prospectively from patients undergoing mitral valve surgery between 2020 and 2023. Subsequently, a retrospective analysis of preoperative and postoperative echocardiographic parameters was performed to e

In heart failure, echocardiographic parameters of right ventricular function are powerful tools to predict renal failure.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a high prevalence in patients with heart failure (HF) and is associated with prolonged hospitalization, increased need for intensive care and mortality. There is an urgent need to identify factors that influence the interaction between heart and kidney disorders, often described as cardiorenal syndrome (CRS). We investigated the epidemiology and risk factors of renal insufficiency in patients with HF. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including 281 consecutive patients with HF that are examined at regular intervals at our outpatien

Recovery of right ventricular function in patients with transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis after one-year tafamidis administration.

Baseline cardiac functions are known to be potent predictors of cardiovascular events in the natural history of transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM). However, previous studies have not shown functional and morphological changes in the heart during tafamidis administration. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tafamidis on cardiac function by measuring right ventricular strain in patients with ATTR-CM. We performed a retrospective analysis of serial transthoracic echocardiography examinations (at baseline and one year after tafamidis introduction) using a vendor-independent spec

Impact of Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty on Right Ventricular Function in Patients With Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension.

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) can develop in some patients after an acute pulmonary embolism. The disease is characterized by the conversion of emboli into fibrotic thrombi that chronically impede normal circulation through the pulmonary arteries and increase pulmonary vascular resistance. Over time, this increases right ventricular (RV) afterload and strains the RV. The RV compensates by undergoing cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and RV dilation that can maintain stroke volume. However, these adaptations eventually decrease cardiac output and lead to right heart failure. Bal

Genome-wide association analysis reveals insights into the genetic architecture of right ventricular structure and function.

Right ventricular (RV) structure and function influence the morbidity and mortality from coronary artery disease (CAD), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), pulmonary hypertension and heart failure. Little is known about the genetic basis of RV measurements. Here we perform genome-wide association analyses of four clinically relevant RV phenotypes (RV end-diastolic volume, RV end-systolic volume, RV stroke volume, RV ejection fraction) from cardiovascular magnetic resonance images, using a state-of-the-art deep learning algorithm in 29,506 UK Biobank participants. We identify 25 unique loci associate

Evaluation of echocardiographic derived parameters for right ventricular size and function using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (cMRI) is the gold standard for right ventricular (RV) assessment due to its high spatial resolution. The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) recommends eight structural and six functional quantitative parameters for evaluation of the RV. This study sought to simplify echocardiographic RV assessment by examining the relative diagnostic value of the echo recommended parameters by applying them to cMRI imaging of the RV. METHODS: We applied ASE recommended measures of RV size and function to 56 cMRI's and compared them to RV volumetric analy

The Right Ventricular-Pulmonary Arterial Coupling and Diastolic Function Response to Therapy in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Multiparametric risk assessment is used in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) to target therapy. However, this strategy is imperfect because most patients remain at intermediate or high risk after initial treatment, with low risk being the goal. Metrics of right ventricular (RV) adaptation are promising tools that may help refine our therapeutic strategy. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does RV adaptation predict therapeutic response over time? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We evaluated 52 incident treatment-naive patients with advanced PAH by catheterization and cardiac imaging longitudinally

Effect of cone reconstruction on right ventricular function in patients with Ebstein's anomaly: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Cone reconstruction (CR) is a novel technique for surgically treating the tricuspid valve and right ventricle (RV) in patients with Ebstein's anomaly. However, precise changes in the RV function after CR remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the RV size and New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class by conducting a meta-analysis of reported data. METHODS: The MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched for relevant studies. The variables were RV measurements, NYHA functional classes and tricuspid valve regurg

Evaluation of right ventricular function in fetal hypoplastic left heart syndrome by color tissue Doppler imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Postnatal outcome of fetuses with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is determined mainly by right ventricular function. Our study examines whether there are differences in right ventricular function during gestation of fetuses with HLHS compared with healthy fetuses. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted including 20 fetuses with HLHS and 20 gestational age-matched controls. Peak systolic and diastolic right ventricular free wall velocities were assessed using color tissue Doppler imaging (c-TDI). Subsequently, isovolumic time intervals, ejection time (ET'), E'/A' ratio a

Synergic effects of renin and aldosterone on right ventricular function in hypertension: a tissue Doppler study.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) is associated with poor cardiovascular outcome. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is involved in alterations of the left ventricular geometry and function. Detrimental effects of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system on the right ventricular function are being postulated, but data supporting this assumption are still lacking. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of hyperreninemia, hyperaldosteronism or their combination on right ventricular function in hypertensive individuals. METHODS: Plasma renin activity (PRA) and plasma a

Coronary sinus dilatation is a sign of impaired right ventricular function in patients with heart failure.

OBJECTIVE: The coronary sinus (CS) has been largely ignored by physicians due to a lack of adequate data about the importance of CS enlargement in patients with heart failure (HF). We aimed to assess whether CS dilatation develops in patients with HF and to demonstrate its relation with global myocardial function of the right ventricle (RV). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 45 healthy subjects and 95 HF patients exhibiting left ventricular systolic dysfunction on echocardiographic examination (EF <45%) secondary to ischemic (n=56) or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) (n=39) were
