Angle Class III malocclusion with anteroposterior and vertical discrepancy in the final stage of growth.

Angle Class III malocclusion is characterized by an anteroposterior dental discrepancy with or without anteroposterior and vertical skeletal changes. Patients usually seek orthodontic treatment because facial appearance is compromised in most cases. The present study describes the clinical case of a 12-year and 6-month-old girl in her final stage of pubertal growth presenting Class III malocclusion with anteroposterior and vertical discrepancies. Initial treatment consisted of maxillary expansion using a Hass expander followed by the use of a Petit facemask for a minimum of 16 hours a day. Dur

Treatment of a "Gummy Smile": Understanding Etiology is Key to Success.

When dealing with excessive gingival display it is important for the treating clinician to properly identify the etiology, as potential etiologic factors can vary widely. Treatment decisions in this case involving a patient with high lip dynamics and a "gummy smile" were complicated because treatment recommendations differed for each of the several etiologies involved. The treatment performed, which included orthodontics combined with crown lengthening and in which the final restorations were segmented anterior to posterior to give both the clinician and laboratory improved control, was design

Bone modelling at fresh extraction sockets: immediate implant placement versus spontaneous healing: an experimental study in the beagle dog.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this investigation is to describe histologically the undisturbed healing of fresh extraction sockets when compared to immediate implant placement. METHODS: In eight beagle dogs, after extraction of the 3P3 and 4P4, implants were inserted into the distal sockets of the premolars, while the mesial sockets were left to heal spontaneously. Each animal provided four socket sites (control) and four implant sites (test). After 6 weeks, animals were sacrificed and tissue blocks were dissected, prepared for ground sectioning. RESULTS: The relative vertical buccal bone resor

Mandibular muscle morphology in children with different vertical facial patterns: A 3-dimensional computed tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: This study was undertaken to assess whether 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) can be used to evaluate the relationships between the mandibular muscles and craniofacial morphology in children with different underlying vertical facial patterns. METHODS: Twenty children (mean age, 11.9 +/- 1.6 years) underwent cranial CT examination. Three-dimensional CT images were reconstructed for the evaluation of the cross-sectional size, volume, and spatial orientation of the masseter, medial pterygoid, and lateral pterygoid muscles. These muscle factors were also assessed in relation to

Differential diagnosis and treatment of excess gingival display.

Excess gingival display, commonly described as the "gummy smile," has received increased emphasis in the dental literature in recent years. There are several etiologies for this condition, including lip length and activity, clinical crown length, dentoalveolar extrusion, and vertical maxillary excess. For this reason, it is essential that a differential diagnosis be developed so that a specific therapy or group of treatments can be developed for a patient. It is the purpose of this article to describe a differential diagnosis for excess gingival display as well as recommendations for treatment

Facial and dental anomalies in cleidocranial dysplasia: a study of 17 cases.

Seventeen cases of cleidocranial dysplasia were analysed. On average, there was mandibular prognathism due to increased mandibular length, and a short cranial base. The maxilla was short vertically but not antero-posteriorly. In 13 young subjects followed for an average period of 6 years, more than half of the total number of teeth of each type had not erupted at the normal age, with the exception of mandibular incisors. Twice as many maxillary incisors were delayed compared with those in the lower jaw. Only six of 25 mandibular central incisors were delayed. There was a total of 63 supernumer

Cephalometric analysis of permanently snoring patients with and without obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Habitual heavy snoring may be considered a preliminary stage of sleep apnea syndrome. This investigation deals with the craniofacial morphology of 51 heavily snoring patients, with and without obstructive sleep apnea, and with 28 healthy control patients. The apnea group showed a reduced posterior airway and a posterior rotation of the mandible. Reduction of the anterior-posterior diameter of the cranial base, maxilla and mandible and vertical reduction of the posterior facial height appeared to be common facial characteristics in both snoring and apnea patients. These findings indicate an ana

Posterior maxillary osteotomies: an aid for a difficult prosthodontic problem.

Patients who have supereruption of posterior dentoalveolar segments provide an interesting challenge to the dentisr. The severe problems require a team approach to achieve the best results. Factors influencing the treatment include the periodontal status of the involved teeth as well as the concern of the patient. The posterior maxillary osteotomy provides the chance to maintain the vital functional teeth in an otherwise difficult situation. It must be emphasized that the patient must wear an opposing splint or prosthesis following surgery to prevent relapse. This conservative approach maintai

Correlation between the upper airway volume and the hyoid bone position, palatal depth, nasal septum deviation, and concha bullosa in different types of malocclusion: A retrospective cone-beam computed tomography study.

BACKGROUND: The upper airway volume is among the factors that affect orthodontic treatment plans. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), as an accurate diagnostic modality, can help assess anatomical structures associated with the upper airway volume. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to use CBCT to determine if there are differences in the upper airway volume between different sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns, considering the hyoid bone position, palatal depth, nasal septum deviation (NSD), and concha bullosa. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From among 105 initial CBCT samples retrieved from the arc
