Vibration does not improve results of the canalith repositioning procedure.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), the canalith repositioning procedure performed with vibration applied over the mastoid bone of the affected ear is more effective in resolving the symptoms and preventing recurrence of BPPV than the procedure performed without vibration. DESIGN: Retrospective case review. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: Ninety-four patients diagnosed as having BPPV involving the posterior semicircular canal. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were assigned to one of 2 treatment groups: the canalith repositionin…

Vibration arthrometry in the patients with failed total knee replacement.

This is a preliminary research on the vibration arthrometry of artificial knee joint in vivo. Analyzing the vibration signals measured from the accelerometer on patella, there are two speed protocols in knee kinematics: 1) 2 degrees/s, the signal is called "physiological patellofemoral crepitus (PPC)", and 2) 67 degrees/s, the signal is called "vibration signal in rapid knee motion". The study has collected 14 patients who had revision total knee arthroplasty due to prosthetic wear or malalignment represent the failed total knee replacement (FTKR), and 12 patients who had just undergone the pr…

Imaging of vocal fold vibration by digital multi-plane kymography.

Digital multi-plane kymography is presented as a new method to demonstrate vocal fold vibration from digital high-speed recordings. Single lines from digital high-speed sequences of laryngoscopical examinations are concatenated to images, which are called kymograms. In order to reveal anterior-posterior (AP) modes of vibration several kymograms from different location of the glottis can be obtained from a single recording. Problems due to rotation of the endoscope or relative movements of patient or examiner can be solved by image processing algorithms specifically designed for this applicatio…

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation and vibration of neck muscles in neglect.

Four neglect patients without visual field defects, one with a lesion of the right basal ganglia and three with a right, predominantly parietal lesion, were examined with a cancellation and a copying task before, during and after neck muscle vibration, during transcutaneous electrical stimulation of neck muscles and during vibration of hand muscles on the left side. In all patients, neck muscle vibration improved task performance, while transcutaneous electrical stimulation and hand vibration had little or no effect. The present results demonstrate that the effect of neck muscle vibration cann…

Prognosis of vibration induced white finger: a follow up study.

OBJECTIVES--To follow up 102 patients with vibration induced white finger (VWF). METHODS--102 subjects with VWF were reexamined one to 13 years after the condition had first been diagnosed. Information about symptoms, occupation, vibration exposure, smoking habits, age, and the prevalence of other diseases was present in the medical records from the first examination and was collected by a questionnaire and an interview at the second examination. The decrease in systolic blood pressure in a finger during cold provocation (FSP%) was measured in the same finger at both examinations. RESULTS--At …

Pain, nerve dysfunction and fatigue in a vibration-exposed population.

The long term use of hand-held vibrating tools may cause vasospastic and neuromuscular problems. Symptoms include painful blanching of the fingers at low temperatures, intermittent paresthesia and numbness, impaired dexterity, a tendency to drop tools, and an increasing inability to identify small objects by touch alone. Neurological as well as vasospastic problems are graded according to the Stockholm workshop scales. Accurate and early diagnosis is particularly important (e.g., in vibration-exposed patients presenting a carpal tunnel syndrome, it is necessary to distinguish whether compressi…

Low-frequency vibration emitted from unstable hip in human neonate.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) continues to be an orthopedic enigma. Some authors still believe it is a purely birth phenomenon. Even with widespread birth screening, however, DDH continues to become evident later than three months of age, long after a satisfactory outcome can be guaranteed. In an effort to reduce the number of late manifestations, the authors have developed a noninvasive form of screening for DDH called vibration arthrometry. Five hundred neonates were examined in local maternity hospitals, according to the guidelines of Ortolani and Barlow. The new method involves …

[The effect of whole-body vibration: an unrecognized medical problem].

Exposure to whole-body vibration is a growing concern in industry, traffic and in other branches of the economy. This harmful physical factor endangers work efficiency and human health not only at work but also in everyday life, in public transportation and even at home. In spite of increasing exposure to vibrations, our medical practice does not pay adequate attention to the health effects of whole-body vibration. The paper deals with the basic characteristics of vibration (frequency, amplitude, velocity and acceleration), its adequate evaluation (effective or weighted average value, peak val…

Objective testing for vasospasm in the hand-arm vibration syndrome.

Since vibration white finger (VWF) became a prescribed industrial disease in 1985, objective testing for the diagnosis and grading of the severity of the condition has become desirable. Measurements have been made of finger blood flow and finger systolic pressure before and after cold challenge in 22 healthy control subjects and 34 men presenting for medical examination in connection with compensation claims for VWF. This type of testing has previously produced one false negative result in 35 patients with an established clinical diagnosis of Raynaud's syndrome and no false positives in 40 con…

Vibration-induced muscle injury. An experimental model and preliminary findings.

The hind paws of rats were subjected to vibration at a frequency of 80 Hz., an acceleration of 32 m./s.2 rms (i.e. ah.w approximately 6.3 m./s.2 rms) for five hours daily during five consecutive days. Morphological, histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses of the soleus, extensor digitorum longus and the plantar muscles in the vibrated limb and the contralateral control limb were performed. No changes were seen in the soleus or extensor digitorum longus muscles but different degrees of degeneration of the muscle fibres were seen in the plantar muscle sections as well as signs of regenera…

Effects of vertical vibration on passenger activities: writing and drinking.

Two laboratory studies have investigated how handwriting ability and holding a cup of liquid depend on the characteristics of whole-body vertical vibration. The effects of vibration magnitude (0.16 to 2.5 ms-2 r.m.s.), vibration frequency (0.5 to 10 Hz), and vibration duration (2 cycles to 10 s) on handwriting were studied with 20 subjects. Subjects were asked to copy letters of the alphabet by writing on a hand-held surface. Writing speed decreased and subjective ratings of writing difficulty increased with increasing vibration magnitude, particularly in the frequency range 4 to 8 Hz. Writing…

Clinical implications of vibration-induced changes in the lumbar spine.

There are strong indications that whole body vibrations are involved in the pathophysiology of different spinal aberrations known or assumed to generate back pain and sciatica. There also are several possible pathogeneses for these pathologic changes, although the proofs still are inconclusive or lacking. A better understanding of the relationships between vibration and spinal disorders in the near future will help us to prevent the occurrence of some of the problems causing pain and disability.

[Digital vibration syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome: possible neurophysiological differences?].

Workers using vibrating tools are exposed to vascular and nervous symptoms called vibration syndrome (VS); moreover, the same subjects show increased prevalence of possible carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). To determine the diagnostic criteria of both syndromes, we studied clinical and neurophysiological signs and differences in 18 patients with VS and in 18 with CTS; neither group had any other pathologic symptoms. Clinical symptoms clearly distinguished the 2 groups of patients: Raynaud's phenomena were mainly observed in patients with VS (83% of cases), whereas Tinel's sign was found exclusivel…

Back disorders in crane operators exposed to whole-body vibration.

In The Netherlands so far little research has been carried out to investigate the health effects of exposure to whole-body vibration at work. In a retrospective (10-year) follow-up study, the incidence of permanent work disabilities in crane operators exposed to vibration was compared to that of a control group. The emphasis in this presentation is on disablement because of back disorders. Among the crane operators with more than 5 years of exposure to vibration, more disability due to back trouble occurred than in the control group. The incidence density ratio (IDR) exceeded 2 for disability …

Influence of local vibration on plasma creatine phosphokinase (CPK) activity.

This study was designed to obtain basic information about the mechanism of the occurrence of muscular disorders after exposure to vibration. The hind legs of rats were exposed to acute and chronic local vibration at frequencies of 30, 60, 120, 240, 480, and 960 Hz with a constant acceleration of 50 m/sec2. The exposure time was four hours for acute, and four hours a day for two weeks continuously for chronic exposure. Blood was collected after exposure to measure plasma creatine phosphokinase (CPK) activity. In both exposure groups the activity of plasma CPK was significantly higher at 30, 60,…

Influence of vision on vibration-induced illusions of limb movement.

Illusory motion of the unseen stationary forearm can be elicited by vibration of the biceps brachii or triceps brachii muscle. We have studied in 12 individuals how sight of part of the arm alone or in relation to other objects affects such vibration-induced, illusory motion of the forearm. Our findings indicate a complex but systematic influence of vision in attenuating apparent motion of the forearm. They show, too, that the seen and felt positions of the forearm can be dissociated and that physically impossible spatial configurations of the arm can be experienced. These findings have implic…

Urinary excretion of hydroxyproline in workers occupationally exposed to vibration.

Urinary hydroxyproline excretion was measured in 130 chain saw operators aged 28-59 and in 31 normal control subjects aged 26-59 with no occupational exposure to vibration. The results measured were expressed as a ratio of hydroxyproline to creatinine. (1) No significant correlation between hydroxyproline/creatinine ratio and age was observed among normal subjects. (2) In chain saw operators grip and pinch strength decreased gradually with an increase of the total chain saw operating time, while the prevalence of pain in the hands or motility disturbance in the elbow joints showed a tendency t…

[Conditioned trace reactions of hypothalamic neurons following exposure to vibration].

Trace reactions were studied in 112 hypothalamic units in rabbits during motor defensive conditioning to time after vibration action of two intensities. A later formation of conditioned trace reactions was observed as compared to the control. Vibration of lesser intensity improved the course of trace processes and slightly increased the number of neurones responding to the conditioned stimulus (45% as against 43% in the control); after a stronger vibration action, conditioned reactions to time were recorded only in 29% of the hypothalamic cells eith a simultaneous diminution of the trace respo…

Hybrid Physics-Guided Neural Network for Vibration Sensor Nonlinearity Correction.

Accelerometers built on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) play a critical role in structural monitoring and machinery diagnostics; however, their accuracy suffers from intrinsic nonlinearities-dead zones, hysteresis, saturation, and colored noise. Conventional physics-based correction methods are interpretable yet cannot capture complicated hysteretic behavior, while purely neural-network approaches generalize poorly and lack a physical foundation. This paper proposes a hybrid architecture that combines a residual convolutional neural network with a physics-guided low-pass filter prior, f
