Simultaneous glottal transillumination or photoglottography (PGG), electroglottography (EGG), and video laryngostroboscopy were used to measure the traveling wave velocity of the vibrating vocal folds during phonation in human subjects. Coordination of air-stepping elicited by subcutaneous injections of L-DOPA (25-100 mg/kg) was studied in rats from the day of birth through 20 days of age. In view of previous research concerning the lateral bias of hand movements accompanying speech, it was postulated that patients with bipolar depression should differ from normal controls with respect to the asymmetry of mouth opening when repeating speech sounds. This hypothesis was confirmed. Our patient group, consisting of 29 remitted euthymic out-patients, did not show the greater right-sided mouth opening characteristic of the gender-matched normal controls.

Forty-eight patients, 4 to 24 years of age, with recurring absence seizures were studied prospectively for twenty-seven months. Each patient and his EEG were recorded simultaneously by a multicamera videotape technique and each recording was repeatedly viewed and described in writing by two observers who subsequently resolved any differences by joint viewing. Recent evidence suggests that frontal brain electrical activity reveals asymmetries in activation in response to positive vs negative affective stimuli. This study was designed to evaluate whether this asymmetry is present at birth. Newborn infants were presented with water followed by a sucrose solution and then by a citric acid solution. Facial expression was videotaped during the presentation of the liquids and EEG was recorded from the frontal and parietal scalp regions on the left and right side. Usable EEG data were obtained from 16 newborn infants in response to these taste conditions.
