[Development of the larynx and trachea following division of the cricoid cartilage and segmental resection of the trachea in the growth stage. An animal experiment study].

Laminotomy as described by Réthi, and segmental tracheal resection with end-to-end anastomosis have proved useful in the adult for the treatment of stenoses of the larynx. In children, the question arises why these may interfere with the growth of the larynx and trachea. A vertical split of the cricoid cartilage followed by stabilization of the larynx by the temporary introduction of a Montgomery silicone T-tube was carried out on four kittens aged four to six weeks. A segmental tracheal resection with end-to-end anastomosis was performed on other animals of the same age. When the animals had

A wireless modular platform for neuro-behavioral recording and closed-loop manipulation in small animals.

Investigating the neural mechanisms of social group interactions and other naturalistic behaviors in small animals remains limited by current technology. Tethered neural recording systems are incompatible with many of these behaviors, while existing wireless devices for small animals are constrained by weight, bandwidth, recording duration and the lack of closed-loop modulation capabilities. Here we overcome these limitations by developing a Wireless, Interactive, Lightweight Datalogger (WILD) with integrated flexible neural probes, optogenetics, an inertial measurement unit, an ultrasonic mic

Intraglottal pressure distribution computed from empirical velocity data in canine larynx.

Intraglottal velocity measurements were taken using particle image velocimetry and the corresponding estimates for the intraglottal pressure were computed using the pressure Poisson equation. Results from five canine larynges showed that when the flow separated from the divergent glottal walls during closing, the vortices that were formed in the separated region of the glottis created negative pressure near the superior aspect of the folds. The magnitude of the negative pressure was directly proportional to the subglottal pressure. At low subglottal pressure, negative pressures at the superior

A cervid vocal fold model suggests greater glottal efficiency in calling at high frequencies.

Male Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) produce loud and high fundamental frequency bugles during the mating season, in contrast to the male European Red Deer (Cervus elaphus scoticus) who produces loud and low fundamental frequency roaring calls. A critical step in understanding vocal communication is to relate sound complexity to anatomy and physiology in a causal manner. Experimentation at the sound source, often difficult in vivo in mammals, is simulated here by a finite element model of the larynx and a wave propagation model of the vocal tract, both based on the morphology and b

Effects of Voice Therapy for Dysphonia due to Tension Imbalance in Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis and Paresis.

OBJECTIVES: Medialization procedures, such as type I thyroplasty, arytenoid adduction, and vocal fold injection, are popular treatments for dysphonia due to unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). However, dysphonia occasionally persists after medialization procedures owing to tension imbalance. This tension imbalance causes diplophonia, asymmetry and aperiodic vibrational flutter in travelling wave motion. Currently, there is no established treatment for tension imbalance. We herein report two cases with residual dysphonia due to tension imbalance following medialization for chronic UVFP, and

Multispecies perspectives on dementia in the poetry of Jenna Butler.

Jenna Butler's Wells (2012) is a collection of poetry in which the poet mourns the loss of her grandmother, a life-long birdwatcher who can still recognize the familiar calls of birds that she is no longer able to name due to cognitive issues associated with dementia. Treating this scenario as one that invites interpretation from a posthuman perspective, this paper conducts a close analysis that is situated at the intersection of age studies and animal studies and highlights the possibilities and the perils of linking these two fields of inquiry. Balanced on the divide between animalizing peop

Individual differences in frequency modulated 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations reflect but do not predict cocaine self-administration in rats.

Frequency-modulated (FM) 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in rats reflect a positive emotional state. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether anticipatory and cocaine-induced FM 50-kHz USVs can predict individual vulnerability to cocaine self-administration behavior. Twenty singly housed rats underwent behavioral testing (elevated plus maze, novel object recognition, and tickling-induced vocalizations) and amphetamine sensitization. The animals then participated in 22 self-administration (SA) sessions (2 days on / 1 day off), during which active nose pokes and FM 50-kHz USVs were r

Thyroarytenoid Muscle Gene Expression in a Rat Model of Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Voice disorders in Parkinson's disease (PD) are early-onset, manifest in the preclinical stages of the disease, and negatively impact quality of life. The complete loss of function in the PTEN-induced kinase 1 gene (Pink1) causes a genetic form of early-onset, autosomal recessive PD. Modeled after the human inherited mutation, the Pink1-/- rat demonstrates significant cranial sensorimotor dysfunction including declines in ultrasonic vocalizations. However, the underlying genetics of the vocal fold thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle that may contribute to vocal deficits has not b

Phonation Threshold Pressure Revisited: Effects of Intrinsic Laryngeal Muscle Activation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Phonation threshold pressure (Pth ) is the minimum subglottic pressure required to reach phonation onset and is considered a marker for vocal efficiency and health. We investigated the effects of intrinsic laryngeal muscle (ILM) activation on Pth . STUDY DESIGN: In vivo animal study. METHODS: In an in vivo canine phonation model, laryngeal adductor muscles were activated together by stimulation of the recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs) and individually via stimulation of respective terminal nerve branches. Cricothyroid (CT) muscles were activated via stimulation of the

Effects of amphetamine on pro-social ultrasonic communication in juvenile rats: Implications for mania models.

Communication is the act of information transfer between sender and receiver. In rats, vocal communication can be studied through ultrasonic vocalizations (USV). 50-kHz USV occur in appetitive situations, most notably juvenile play, likely expressing the sender׳s positive affective state. Such appetitive 50-kHz USV serve important pro-social communicative functions and elicit social exploratory and approach behavior in the receiver. Emission of 50-kHz USV can be induced pharmacologically by the administration of psychostimulant drugs, such as amphetamine. However, it is unknown whether ampheta

Behavioral changes after maternal separation are reversed by chronic constant light treatment.

BACKGROUND: Rats subjected to maternal separation display behavioral alterations (e.g. increased immobility in the forced swim test) and molecular changes (e.g. in growth factors and related signal transduction proteins). Light treatment has previously been shown to have antidepressant effects in rat models of depression, but has not been studied in a rodent model of maternal separation. METHODS: This study focused on maternally separated rat pups. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of chronic constant light exposure during adolescence with the selective serotonin reuptake inhib

Regulation of sociosexual communication in female Long-Evans rats by ovarian hormones.

Two experiments examined the role of the steroid hormones, estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), and testosterone (T), in activating scent marking and 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations in ovariectomized Long-Evans rats in response to a devocalized male rat. In Experiment 1, females received, in a counterbalanced order, a series of six hormone treatments consisting of two injections (48-54 and 4 hr before behavioral tests). The six treatments were 8 micrograms E2 followed by 500 micrograms P or oil, 2 micrograms E2 followed by 500 micrograms P or oil, and oil followed by 500 micrograms P or oil. Inje

The effect of recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation on phonation in an in vivo canine model.

The present investigation was designed to examine the effect of variation in recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation (RLNS) on vocal fold vibration. Photoglottography (PGG), electroglottography (EGG), and subglottic pressure (Psub) were measured in seven mongrel dogs using an in vivo canine model of phonation. The PGG, EGG, and Psub signals were examined at three fundamental frequencies (F0) (100 Hz, 130 Hz, and 160 Hz) for RLNS, using a constant rate of air flow. Increasing RLNS, which caused activation of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles, produced a modest increase in F0, a marked increase in P

Behavioral effects of acclimatization to restraint protocol used for awake animal imaging.

Functional MRI in awake rats involves acclimatization to restraint to minimize motion. We designed a study to examine the effects of an acclimatization protocol (5 days of restraint, 60 min per day) on the emission of 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations and performance in a forced swim test (FST). Our results showed that USV calls are reduced significantly by days 3, 4 and 5 of acclimatization. Although the rats showed less climbing activity (and more immobility) in FST on day 5 compared to the 1st day of restraint acclimatization, the difference was not detected once the animals were given a 2-we

Subject-Specific Modeling of Implant Placement for Type I Thyroplasty Surgery.

Type I thyroplasty is widely used to improve voice production in patients affected by unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Almost two-thirds of laryngologists report using Silastic® implants to medialize the vocal fold, with implant size, shape, and location determined experientially. However, post-surgical complications arising from this procedure (extrusion, migration, resizing) necessitate revision in 4.5-16% of patients. To improve initial surgical outcomes, we have developed a subject-specific modeling tool, PhonoSim, which uses model reconstruction from MRI scans to predict the optimal impla

Advances in regenerative medicine for otolaryngology/head and neck surgery.

Head and neck structures govern the vital functions of breathing and swallowing. Additionally, these structures facilitate our sense of self through vocal communication, hearing, facial animation, and physical appearance. Loss of these functions can lead to loss of life or greatly affect quality of life. Regenerative medicine is a rapidly developing field that aims to repair or replace damaged cells, tissues, and organs. Although the field is largely in its nascence, regenerative medicine holds promise for improving on conventional treatments for head and neck disorders or providing therapies
