BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the impact of disability from nonfatal work-related injuries and illnesses. We developed Years of Productivity Lost (YPL) as a measure of the burden of disability.
METHODS: YPL was calculated for incident workers' compensation claims with compensable injuries filed in 1986 in Washington State. Final work disability status was determined in June, 1993. We estimated YPL by adding actual accumulated time loss and future lost productivity predicted from permanent partial disability awards and pensions.

We reviewed results of the first 131 recipients who received a single or bilateral sequential lung transplant at Barnes Hospital between July 1, 1988, and July 31, 1992. Follow-up data were complete as of January 1, 1993, for a minimum of 5 months' follow-up for all surviving recipients. There were 11 hospital deaths for an overall 92% hospital survival. Thirteen late deaths occurred and 107 (81%) recipients remain alive with a median follow-up period of 19 months. Tracking law enforcement-associated fatalities is complicated by an absence of a national database. Death certificates often fail to report deaths due to law enforcement activity. Adopting recommendations by the National Association of Medical Examiners, the present study was conducted using records from the King County Medical Examiner's Office of all deaths associated with law enforcement, including deaths in correctional facilities, from 1995 to 2024. Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is an important cause of respiratory illness. However, information about hMPV incidence, patient characteristics, and symptoms outside hospital settings is limited. BACKGROUND: Nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae, often associated with wounds, can rarely cause infective endocarditis (IE). Five patients with C. diphtheriae IE were identified within 12 months at a Seattle-based hospital system. We reviewed prior C. diphtheriae-positive cultures to determine if detections had increased over time and evaluated epidemiologic trends.
METHODS: We conducted a formal electronic health record search to identify all patients aged ≥18 years with C. diphtheriae detected in a clinical specimen (ie, wound, blood, sputum) between 1 September 2020 and 1 April 2023.
