Toward harmonizing global pesticide regulations for surface freshwaters in support of protecting human health.

To promote international collaboration on environmental pollution management and human health protection, we conducted a global-level study on the management of pesticides for surface freshwater quality. Prior to actions being taken in terms of water treatment or remediation, it is essential that clear and definite regulations be disseminated. In our study, 3094 surface freshwater quality standards for 184 different pesticides were recorded from 53 countries and categorized according to pesticide types and standard types, as well as diverse use of freshwater by humans, and compared water quali

Fluoride occurrences, health problems, detection, and remediation methods for drinking water: A comprehensive review.

Fluoride contamination has become a considerable threat to our society worldwide. Fluoride in drinking water is primarily due to rich fluoride soil, volcanic activity, forage, grasses and grains, and anthropogenic reasons. World Health Organization has regulated the upper limit for fluoride in drinking water to be 1.5 mg/L while different countries have set their standards according to their circumstances. Excess amounts of fluoride ions in drinking water can cause dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, arthritis, bone damage, osteoporosis, muscular damage, fatigue, joint-related problems, and

1,4-Dioxane removal from water and membrane fouling elimination using CuO-coated ceramic membrane coupled with ozone.

1,4-Dioxane is a synthetic cyclic ether traditionally used as a chlorinated solvent stabilizer. It is a small molecule and recalcitrant compound that is difficult to remove by conventional processes and in this regard, there is a need for the development of new technologies. In this study, an innovative CuO-coated ceramic membrane (CM) reactor system that can be used to oxidize 1,4-dioxane dissolved in surface water by catalytic ozonation was developed. The effect of the thickness of the CuO deposited on the ceramic membrane surface on the permeability, fouling resistance, 1,4-dioxane removal,

Disinfection by-products in drinking water: Occurrence, toxicity and abatement.

Disinfection means the killing of pathogenic organisms (e.g. bacteria and its spores, viruses, protozoa and their cysts, worms, and larvae) present in water to make it potable for other domestic works. The substances used in the disinfection of water are known as disinfectants. At municipal level, chlorine (Cl2), chloramines (NH2Cl, NHCl2), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), ozone (O3) and ultraviolet (UV) radiations, are the most commonly used disinfectants. Chlorination, because of its removal efficiency and cost effectiveness, has been widely used as method of disinfection of water. But, disinfection

Drinking water treatment by multistage filtration on a household scale: Efficiency and challenges.

Universalising actions aimed at water supply in rural communities and indigenous populations must focus on simple and low-cost technologies adapted to the local context. In this setting, this research studied the dynamic gravel filter (DGF) as a pre-treatment to household slow-sand filters (HSSFs), which is the first description of a household multistage filtration scale to treat drinking water. DGFs (with and without a non-woven blanket on top of the gravel layer) followed by HSSFs were tested. DGFs operated with a filtration rate of 3.21 m3 m-2.d-1 and HSSFs with 1.52 m3 m-2.d-1. Cr(VI) Adsorption on Engineered Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Exploring Complexation Processes and Water Chemistry.

Surface-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles are promising adsorbents due to their large surface areas and ease of separation after contaminant removal. In this work, the affinity of Cr(VI) adsorption to 8 nm surface-functionalized superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles was determined for surface coatings with amine (trimethyloctadecylammonium bromide, CTAB) and carboxyl (stearic acid, SA) functional groups. Cr(VI) adsorbed more strongly to the CTAB-coated nanoparticles than to the SA-coated materials due to electrostatic interactions between positively charged CTAB and anionic Cr(VI) spec

Superior trichloroethylene removal from water by sulfide-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron/graphene aerogel composite.

Sulfide-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) is a promising material for removal of organic pollutants from water, but S-nZVI nanoparticles (NPs) easily agglomerate and have poor contact with organic contaminants. Herein, we propose a new S-nZVI/graphene aerogel (S-nZVI/GA) composite which exhibits superior removal capability for trichloroethylene (TCE) from water. Three-dimensional porous graphene aerogel (GA) can improve the efficiency of electron transport, enhance the adsorption of organic pollutants and restrain the agglomeration of the core-shell S-nZVI NPs. The TCE removal rates

The effectiveness of water treatment processes against schistosome cercariae: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is one of the most disabling neglected tropical diseases, ranking second in terms of years lived with disability. While treatment with the drug praziquantel can have immediate beneficial effects, reinfection can occur rapidly if people are in contact with cercaria-infested water. Water treatment for schistosomiasis control seeks to eliminate viable cercariae from water, thereby providing safe alternative water supplies for recreational and domestic activities including laundry and bathing. This provision may reduce contact with infested water, which is crucial for r

Degradation of methadone by the sunlight/FC process: Kinetics, radical species participation and influence of the water matrix.

Free chlorine sunlight photolysis (sunlight/FC) markedly enhances the degradation rate of methadone, a synthetic opioid used medically, over that obtained using sunlight alone. The pseudo-first-order rate constants of methadone degradation under acidic conditions ([methadone] = 0.2 μM, [free chlorine] = 4 μM, and pH = 4) for sunlight/FC and sunlight photolysis are 7.0 ± 1.1 × 10-2 min-1 and 1.4 ± 0.2 × 10-2 min-1, respectively. The improved methadone degradation can be attributed to the production of HO and reactive chlorine species (RCS) during sunlight/FC photolysis. HO and RCS predominantly

Aminobacter sp. MSH1 invades sand filter community biofilms while retaining 2,6-dichlorobenzamide degradation functionality under C- and N-limiting conditions.

Aminobacter sp. MSH1 is of interest for bioaugmentation of biofiltration units in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) due to its ability to degrade the groundwater micropollutant 2,6-dichlorobenzamide (BAM). Using a continuous flow chamber biofilm model, MSH1 was previously shown to colonize surfaces and degrade BAM at trace concentrations as low as 1 μg/L under the oligotrophic conditions found in DWTPs. In DWTP filtration units, MSH1 has to compete with the resident biofilm microbiota for space and nutrients. Using the same model, we examined how a sand filter community (SFC) affects MSH

[Removal of Humic Acid from Water Using Pt/biochar Electrode Reactor].

A Pt/biochar electrode reactor was developed to remove humic acid in water. The removal efficiency and characteristics of the reactor were investigated. Experimental results showed that Pt/biochar electrode reactor obtained 74.58% removal rate after 300 min reaction under current density of 20 mA·cm-2. The removal rate was increased by 58.3% comparing with 47.10% removal rate achieved by Pt/graphite electrode reactor. Electrochemical oxidation and air floating played the main roles in removal of humic acid from water. The improved removal efficiency of humic acid in Pt/biochar electrode reacto

Removal of 2-ClBP from soil-water system using activated carbon supported nanoscale zerovalent iron.

We explored the feasibility and removal mechanism of removing 2-chlorobiphenyl (2-ClBP) from soil-water system using granular activated carbon (GAC) impregnated with nanoscale zerovalent iron (reactive activated carbon or RAC). The RAC samples were successfully synthesized by the liquid precipitation method. The mesoporous GAC based RAC with low iron content (1.32%) exhibited higher 2-ClBP removal efficiency (54.6%) in the water phase. The result of Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model implied that the different molecular structures between 2-ClBP and trichloroethylene (TCE) resulted in more dif

[Preparation of coated iron nanoparticles for reduction of trichloroethylene].

Nanoscale alpha-Fe particles with size of about 80 nm were prepared with a microemulsion-coated method. The results demonstrated that this kind of iron particles could exist stably in the air for 7 d compared with nanoscale iron particles prepared by liquid-phase and microemulsion methods. The removal rate of trichloroethylene with an initial concentration of 10 mg x L(-1) can reach 90% in 700 h. The reduction kinetics was studied under room temperature, neutral, and anaerobic conditions. Experiments show that the reduction process of TCE by nanoscale iron particles conforms to pseudo first or

Rangeland grazing as a source of steroid hormones to surface waters.

Cattle and other livestock excrete endogenous steroid hormones, including estrogens, androgens, and progestins; therefore, allowing grazing livestock direct access to surface waters can result in the release of steroids in agricultural watersheds. Elevated concentrations of steroids are problematic because low concentrations of certain steroids can affect fish reproduction. To assess the occurrence and transport of steroids arising from grazing cattle, gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS) was used to quantify a suite of estrogens, androgens, and progestins in small creeks imp

Effects of phosphate addition on the removal of disinfection by-product formation potentials by biological activated carbon filtration.

In drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), the widely used biological activated carbon filters (BACFs), as the last barrier before disinfection, can remove dissolved organic matter (DOM) known as precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Whether phosphate addition can improve water purification and DBP control of BACFs is still controversial. This study investigated short-term and long-term effects of phosphate addition on controlling DBP formation potentials (FPs) by BACFs via column and batch experiments. The BAC columns presented good water purification performance: they removed aroun…

Breaking the Rigid-Locking Effect: Unlocking Efficient Fenton-Like Reactions for Water Decontamination.

Overcoming the kinetic bottleneck of Fe(II) regeneration has always been a top priority for enhancing Fenton/Fenton-like processes to degrade emerging contaminants (ECs). In conventional iron-based catalysts (e.g., Fe2O3, FeOOH), the iron center is tightly locked inside a rigid cage of hexa-oxygen coordination ([FeO6] unit) that is resistant to geometric distortion and electron transfer. This phenomenon, termed "Rigid Locking Effect", hinders the Fe(III)-to-Fe(II) conversion. To break this, we propose a ligand-engineering strategy by partially replacing oxygen coordination with chlorine, featu

Coordination Microenvironment Engineering in Nanoconfined Structures Shifts Peracetic Acid Activation toward Broad-Spectrum Radicals for Enhanced Hospital Wastewater Purification.

Peracetic acid (PAA) presents a promising solution for hospital wastewater treatment, by integrating direct disinfection with the catalytic generation of oxidative species for pollutant degradation. While nanoconfined catalysts exhibit high efficiency and low metal leaching in PAA activation, their reactive outputs have been largely confined to limited broad-spectrum pollutant removal in such complex wastewater. Herein, we break the traditional paradigm of nanoconfined catalysts favoring nonradical pathways by modulating the iron coordination microenvironment within novel carbon nanotube-confi

Adaptive reinforcement learning for energy-efficient high-recovery closed-circuit reverse osmosis.

Closed-circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO) achieves high recovery; however, its semi-batch purge-and-refill cycles complicate control and optimization. Unlike static rule-based operation, reinforcement learning is increasingly used for operational optimization to adaptively select real-time control setpoints under changing conditions. In this study, a data-calibrated dynamic CCRO simulator was integrated with a reinforcement learning control framework and evaluated under realistic plant-variable conditions. Plant behavior was stably reproduced by the simulator, achieving low RMSE across permeate fl

Mechanochemical Molten-Salt-Assisted Surface Nitridation Promotes Electron Transfer Dechlorination of Zerovalent Iron.

The widespread application of zerovalent iron (ZVI) in water treatment and remediation has motivated research into modifications of the material that result in improved performance. The newest and most promising involves nitridation, but available methods for nitridation are not environmentally sustainable processes. Here, we demonstrate that mechanochemical molten-salt-assisted synthesis can be an effective method to produce surface-nitridated ZVI (sN-ZVI). This modification promoted the dechlorination rate of ZVI by up to 82-fold toward chlorinated ethenes and chloroform (CF). Enhanced condu
