Thalamic dysfunction has been associated with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. We describe an adult patient with a lacunar infarct in the posterior region of the right thalamus exhibiting a paranoid schizophrenia-like psychosis as the only clinical manifestation. Neuropsychological assessment showed alterations in visuospatial memory and executive functions at follow up. This case highlights the role of information processing by the thalamus in the development of delusions. We suggest that dysfunction of the right mediodorsal and pulvinar thalamic nuclei disrupts both thalamic sens

Objective: Neurodevelopmental disorders, including Reading Disorder, Disorder of Written Expression, and Developmental Coordination Disorder, often co-occur with ADHD. Although research has identified increased functional impairment in the presence of these comorbid diagnoses, few direct comparisons of intellectual profiles have been conducted. Thus, the present study examined Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) profiles of children with ADHD alone and with comorbid neurodevelopmental disorders. Method: Participants included 296 children with ADHD, ADHD with Devel

The neuropsychological test scores of 23 learning disabled children were compared with those of a matched population of normal children in the 9-1 to 13-1 age range. All children were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), a dichotic listening task involving both free and directed recall conditions, a handedness inventory, the Tactile Performance Test and the Category Test from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. A multivariate analysis of variance resulted in a significant separation between groups (p less than .001) using these procedures

BACKGROUND: The majority of children born with very low birth weight (VLBW; < 1500g) enter mainstream schools. They experience significant neurodevelopmental disabilities during childhood. The specific aims of our study were to evaluate the neonatal outcomes of VLBW infants and whether they would influence intelligence quotient (IQ), cognitive function and learning disabilities at the age of 6 or 8 years.
METHODS: We enrolled VLBW neonates who weighed less than 1500g and who were delivered at Shin-Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital in 1996 and 1999. The psychological assessments were applied wit

The study assessed cognitive decline in non-demented, non-depressed patients with well defined Parkinson's disease and determined the predictive value for cognitive decline of different motor symptoms. Motor disability was measured with the Unified Parkinson's disease rating scale, impairment in activities of daily living, levodopa test, and long term clinical follow up. Neuropsychological evaluations included modified mini mental state, fluency, Wechsler logical memory, Wisconsin card sorting test, and the Montgomery and Asberg depression rating scale. Fifty three patients fulfilling clinical

BACKGROUND: Oral supplementation of anserine/carnosine helps preserve cognitive functions in healthy older adults. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transition between cognitive-normal and dementia. Therefore, it needs to investigate whether anserine/carnosine supplementation (ACS) has effects on subjects with MCI.
METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-week trial was performed. Fifty-four subjects with MCI were randomized to an active group ingesting 750 mg of anserine and 250 mg of carnosine per day or a placebo (1:1). Evaluation of cognitive change was conducted util

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) often exhibit cognitive impairments, with choroid plexus (ChP) volume linked to these deficits and cortical structures. However, the relationship between ChP volume, cognition, and brain morphology in mood disorders remains understudied. This study aimed to investigate these mechanisms.
METHOD: The study included 216 BD patients, 316 MDD patients, and 268 healthy controls who completed questionnaires, cognitive tests (e.g., the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), the Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), the Chinese Rev

Recent studies have shown a positive effect of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), a noninvasive brain stimulation technique, on cognitive function of healthy individuals [1]. However, investigation into the effects of tACS on individuals with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is lacking. In this pilot study, we investigated the hypothesis that following a regular schedule of challenging brain exercises combined with simultaneous tACS application would improve the working memory and cognitive function of older adults with memory impairments. Further, we explored whet

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is characterized by optic neuritis and longitudinally extensive acute transverse myelitis. The brain is generally considered healthy in NMO, though very recent studies have demonstrated that magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities may be observed in various brain regions of NMO patients. To date, cognitive functions have never been investigated in NMO.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate cognitive functions in a cohort of 30 patients with NMO.
DESIGN: Observational, prospective study.
PATIENTS: We studied 30 patients with NMO and compared them with 30 patients

Research on mathematics achievement by children with Williams syndrome (WS) has been very limited. We describe the math achievement of 72 9-year-olds with WS, compare their math and reading achievement, and explore concurrent predictors of math achievement using the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-III (WIAT-III) to measure achievement and the Differential Ability Scales-II (DAS-II) to measure cognitive abilities. For both Numerical Operations and Math Problem Solving, mean standard scores (SSs) were in the mild disability range with a full range from severe disability to average ability.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) have an elevated risk for anxiety disorders throughout the life span, making it a research priority to identify the individual factors associated with anxiety. Most of the existing literature is based on questionnaire data and suggests that impaired executive functions (EF) increase the risk for anxiety in WS. The aim of this study was to use direct measures by trained clinicians to investigate the effects of general intelligence, inhibition, sustained attention, and working memory on anxiety in WS, to further elucidate potential underlying m

BACKGROUND: Chronic primary musculoskeletal pain (CPMP) is a recently defined diagnosis characterised by persistent pain accompanied by emotional distress and/or functional disability. Although sleep disturbances and cognitive complaints are common in individuals with chronic pain, few studies have examined their relationship in CPMP, a condition that remains underexplored. This study aimed to examine whether cognitive functioning in individuals with CPMP is affected by sleep quality, exploring its potential contribution across cognitive domains to the neuropsychological profile of this condit
