Dry eye syndrome (DES) poses a significant challenge for astronauts during space missions, with reports indicating up to 30% of International Space Station (ISS) crew members. The microgravity environment of space alters fluid dynamics, affecting distribution of fluids on the surface of the eye as well as inducing cephalad fluid shifts that can alter tear drainage. Chronic and persistent DES not only impairs visual function, but also compromises the removal of debris, a heightened risk for corneal abrasions in the microgravity environment. Despite the availability of artificial tears on the IS

Crewed spaceflight missions require careful scrutinization of the health risks including alterations to the tear film lipid layer in astronauts. We review the current literature and prior published work on tear film lipid layer biophysics and secondary spaceflight-associated dry eye syndrome (SADES). We define the term spaceflight-associated dry eye syndrome to describe the collection of ocular surface signs and symptoms experienced by astronauts during spaceflight. Our review covers the ocular surface and lipidomics in the spaceflight environment. From our literature review, we extrapolate bi

As interest in deep space travel grows exponentially, understanding human adaptation in becoming an interplanetary species is crucial. This includes the prospect of reproduction. This review summarizes recent updates and innovations in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) on Earth, while also discussing current challenges and areas for improvement in adapting ART studies to the space environment. We discuss the critical components of ART - gamete handling and preparation, fertilization, embryo culture, and cryopreservation - from the daily practice perspective of clinical embryologists and

The International Space Station (ISS) has the possibility to perform experiments regarding rodent reproduction in microgravity. The musculoskeletal system at birth in precocial rodent species more resembles the human than that of altricial rodent species. For precocial rodent species with body weight ≤ 500 g (limit of ISS) determined were: adult body mass, newborn body mass, head-body length, tail length, existing variants (wild, domesticated, laboratory), single/group housing, dry food consumption/24 h, water intake/24 h, basal metabolic rate mlO2/g/h, environmental temperature, sand baths, u

BACKGROUND: While skin conditions are commonly reported in flight on the International Space Station (ISS), postflight skin complaints have generally been limited to foot sole sensitivity upon reloading after landing. In this case report, we describe the postflight skin findings in NASA's first year-long crewmember.CASE REPORT: The crewmember was a 51-yr-old astronaut who spent 340 d in space on this mission. His in-flight course was unremarkable except for medication use for congestion, likely secondary to microgravity-induced fluid shift and elevated CO₂ levels on the ISS, and an episode of

Microgravity in space or simulated by special ground-based devices provides an unusual but unique environment to study and influence tumour cell processes. By investigating thyroid cancer cells in microgravity for nearly 20 years, researchers got insights into tumour biology that had not been possible under normal laboratory conditions: adherently growing cancer cells detach from their surface and form three-dimensional structures. The cells included in these multicellular spheroids (MCS) were not only altered but behave also differently to those grown in flat sheets in normal gravity, more cl

Papilledema has long been associated with elevated intracranial pressure. Classically, tumors, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and obstructive hydrocephalus have led to an increase in intracranial pressure causing optic nerve head edema and observable optic nerve swelling. Recent reports describe astronauts returning from prolonged space flight on the International Space Station with papilledema (Mader et al., 2011) [1]. Papilledema has not been observed in shorter duration space flight. Other recent work has shown that the difference in intraocular pressure (IOP) and cerebrospinal fluid

Orienting oneself in space is not an easy task. On Earth, we combine visual, vestibular and pressure cues into a coherent concept of up and down. Since there are no cues from gravity in space, astronauts have to adjust the way they determine up from down, with the possible risk of space motion sickness. In three tasks performed by one astronaut in the International Space Station (ISS), we examined the effect of artificial touch cues presented to the torso. The role of "natural" touch cues on spatial orientation in microgravity, such as pressure presented to the sole of the feet, has already be

Bone loss during long-term space flight is potentially a significant problem. Bone mineral density measurements show that bone is lost at a rate of about 1% per month from the lumbar spine, and 1.5% per month from the hip. Bone density changes are not uniform throughout the skeleton, and there is accumulating evidence that the distribution of bone density changes may be related to fluid shifts observed in microgravity. The paper summarises the data relating fluid shift of bone density changes in microgravity. In addition, microgravity and ground-based experiment were carried out to investigate

INTRODUCTION: We tested the hypothesis that the elevated peak heart rate (HR) response to maximal exercise following microgravity exposure is associated with increased plasma levels of catecholamines.
METHODS: To do this, plasma norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) were measured in venous blood samples obtained from 7 subjects before and immediately after graded supine cycle exercise to volitional fatigue performed prior to and at the conclusion of 16 d of 6 degrees head-down tilt (HDT).
RESULTS: Resting HR was increased (p = 0.014) following HDT (56 +/- 3 to 63 +/- 2 bpm), but pre-exerci

Space Motion Sickness (SMS) is the malady which frequently occurs shortly after attainment of sustained exposure to hypogravity. It is characterised by a variety of symptoms, which may proceed to nausea and eventually vomiting. Natural adaptation usually occurs if exposure to hypogravity is maintained. The condition appears to be the manifestation of motion sickness that is specific to hypogravity. It is associated with otolith-canal and otolith-eye conflict. SMS may have operational significance in impairing the performance of spacecraft crews. The condition is likely to be amenable to treatm

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased susceptibility to fractures. The microgravity of space creates an extreme environment that provides a model for osteoporosis in humans. This greatly accelerated form of osteopenia results in a 0.5-2% loss of bone mass per month. Rat models for this osteoporosis have been examined on many occasions, but STS-108 was the first Space Shuttle flight to use mice. Data reported to date indicate that spaceflight experiments with mice hold promise in predicting s

The results showed that rats experiencing simulated weightlessness through tail suspension developed elevated IL-4 levels in the soleus muscle and periosteum, with serum IL-4 concentrations remaining unaltered. In vitro, primary PSCs were treated with recombinant IL-4, and the effects of IL-4 on the proliferation a …

Rodent hindlimb unloading (HU) model was developed to elucidate responses/mechanisms of adverse consequences of space weightlessness. Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MMSCs) were isolated from rat femur and tibia bone marrows and examined ex vivo after 2 weeks of HU and subsequent 2 weeks of restoration of load (HU + RL). In both bones, decrease of fibroblast colony forming units (CFU-f) after HU with restoration after HU + RL detected. In CFU-f and MMSCs, levels of spontaneous/induced osteocommitment were similar. MMSCs from tibia initially had greater spontaneous mineralization of extr…
