[Investigating the symptoms of white matter disorders].

In this presentation, I will examine the intricate systemic connections in the white matter and the disturbances that occur due to diseases. In particular, I will discuss Marchiafava-Bignami disease, leukodystrophy with neuroaxonal spheroids, and myotonic dystrophy. Investigation of all three diseases reveals the crosstalk essential for the healthy brain and the resulting dysfunctions that follow lesions of different etiologies.

Origin of the pinking phenomenon of white wines.

Pinking is the terminology used for the salmon-red blush color that may appear in white wines produced exclusively from white grape varieties. The isolation of pinking compounds and their analysis by RP-HPLC-DAD and ESI-MS(n) showed that the origin of the pinking phenomenon in white wines from Vitis vinifera L. of Sı́ria grape variety are the anthocyanins, mainly malvidin-3-O-glucoside. The analysis showed that the anthocyanins were located both in the pulp and in the skin. Wine pinking severity was negatively related with the increase of the average temperature of the first 10 days of October…

Pheochromocytoma in a white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).

A 46-yr-old male white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) died during anesthesia following agonal excitation. On postmortem, a well-demarcated 2.5-cm tan mass was identified in the right adrenal gland. Histopathology confirmed the presence of a pheochromocytoma, and elevated levels of epinephrine in serum collected shortly prior to the animal's death, as compared with sera from healthy controls, demonstrated the functional nature of the tumor. Although rare, pheochromocytoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of suspected hypertension and acute death in rhinos.

Treatment of white coat hypertension with metformin.

White coat hypertension (WCH) is most likely a disorder associated with metabolic syndrome. The study was performed at the Internal Medicine Polyclinic of Dumlupinar University on routine check-up patients. WCH cases who were overweight or obese and desiring weight loss were divided into two subgroups according to whether they preferred to achieve weight loss by medication or diet therapy. The study included 324 cases (204 females) with WCH, 45 of whom were in normal weight range. Therefore, 86.1% (279) of cases with WCH were either overweight or obese, and 41.3% (134) of all WCH cases had dys…

White matter imaging in holoprosencephaly in children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Holoprosencephaly is a disorder of forebrain development characterized by a failure of the brain to separate into two hem … sencephaly. Diffusion tensor imaging has been and will continue to be an important tool for imaging white matter in the brain, and will be reviewed here. Furthermore, recent evidence suggests that holoprosencephaly can be associated with delays or abnormalities in myelination. The functional implications of white matter abnormalities in children with ho …

Ectrodactyly in a West Highland white terrier.

A case of monomelic forelimb ectrodactyly (lobster-claw deformity) in a West Highland white terrier is reported. Clinical and radiographic findings are described. The dog was treated with a soft tissue reconstruction of the cleft. It later developed a slight varus-type deformity at the carpus but remained sound with occasional bouts of mild lameness following vigorous exercise. To the author's knowledge, this is the first reported case of canine ectrodactyly treated by simple cleft reconstruction, and only the second report of ectrodactyly in this breed.

Eating disorders in white and black women.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological studies of eating disorders in the United States have focused on white women and girls, and the prevalence of eating disorders in ethnic minority groups is unknown. This study examined the prevalence of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder in a geographically and economically diverse community sample of young white and black women who previously participated in the 10-year National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Growth and Health Study. METHOD: All NHLBI Growth and Health Study participants were recruited for this study. A two-stage…

A study of "white spotted kidneys" in cattle.

A study was performed at an abattoir in Australia, in an attempt to correlate focal chronic interstitial nephritis (FCIN) producing the so-called "white spotted kidney", with Leptospira spp. and other pathogens in cattle. Samples of kidneys, urine and blood were collected immediately after slaughter from 46 two-year-old heifers, and 72 cows and bulls with gross lesions consistent with FCIN. The same samples were also collected from nine heifers and 12 cows with no gross kidney lesions. Aqueous humour was also collected from the eye of 17 of the adult animals. The sera were processed by a micro…

Pathophysiology and classification of the vibration white finger.

Skin, arteries and nerves of the upper extremities can be affected by vibration exposure. Recent advances in skin and vascular biology as well as new investigative methods, have shown that neurovascular symptoms may be due to different vascular and neurological disorders which should be differentiated if proper management is to be evaluated. Three types of vascular disorder can be observed in the vibration white finger: digital organic microangiopathy, a digital vasospastic phenomenon and arterial thrombosis in the upper extremities. An imbalance between endothelin-1 and calcitonin-gene-relate…

Pneumomediastinum associated with inhalation of white smoke.

Hexachloroethane (HC) smoke, also known as white smoke, is an obscurant used in numerous military situations. Many adverse health effects are associated with the use of white smoke, some of which are potentially life threatening. Inhalation is the most frequent route of injury. Two deaths among U.S. Army personnel resulted from HC smoke exposure in 1988. As recently as 1997, a United Nations soldier in Bosnia died after an HC smoke canister was discharged in his tent. Injuries are predominantly pulmonary and range from cough and dyspnea to chemical pneumonitis, pulmonary edema, and adult respi…

The patient with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is characterized by a classic ECG pattern and a history of palpitations, syncope, pre-syncope, or tachyarrhythmias. An electrophysiology study is an integral part of the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, and with the advent of catheter ablative techniques, WPW syndrome is now considered a curable disease. The critical care nurse needs to be aware of the acute and chronic treatment of this syndrome, the complications of therapy, and the educational needs of the patient and family.

[The "white coat effect" in hypertensive patients].

The "white coat effect" has been investigated by non-invasive automatic blood pressure monitoring in patients with hypertension, defined by casual blood pressure readings. A significant "white coat effect" has been demonstrated in 30 (32%) of the 93 patients: the average values were 17/9 mmHg and 6 beat/min, the highest values were 37/29 mmHg and 13 beat/min. The examination has been repeated after 24 hours in 11 cases and the phenomenon was reproducible. The "white coat effect" did not disappear even when the changes were compared to the averages of three subsequent automatic blood pressure m…
