OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WBMRI) inflammatory and structural lesions in most joints and entheses in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with adalimumab.
METHODS: WBMRI was obtained at weeks 0, 6, 16, and 52 in a 52 week follow-up study of 37 RA patients starting treatment with adalimumab. Readability and reliability of WBMRI were investigated for 76 peripheral joints, 23 discovertebral units, the sacroiliac joints, and 33 entheses. Copper (Cu) deficiency in rats reduces the relative concentration of duodenal hephaestin (Hp), reduces iron (Fe) absorption, and causes anemia. Comparative studies on the translocation and retention of intramuscularly (i.m.) injected thorium nitrate (234Th 46 ng + 232Th 5 microg per rat) in solutions of citrate, CaDTPA or citrate + CaDTPA in rats have been conducted. Four color processed whole body bone scintigraphy with 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate was performed in six patients on maintenance hemodialysis, and the results of semiquantitative colorimetric analysis were compared with those of a normal group. The difference between the two (control and patient group) was statistically significant (P less than 0.01). Furthermore, the effect of 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 treatment on renal osteodystrophy was evaluated by this method. The results indicated that this method provides a useful method for assessing the response of renal osteodystrophy to treatment.

Human calcitonin (Cibacalcin), at a dose of 0.5 mg daily for 15 days followed by 0.5 mg every other day for 4-6 months, was administered to 11 patients (eight men and three women, aged 36-74 years) with posttraumatic reflex sympathetic dystrophy of the lower limbs (stage I-II). Within one month there was significant lessening of pain, improved mobility and less oedema. Biochemical tests were within normal limits before and after treatment, while the pre-treatment raised bone retention of 99mTc-methylene-diphosphonate and increased blood flow in the affected area became normal during treatment.

The authors describe a complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and discuss its type according to the presence or absence of nerve injury. A patient underwent thromboendarterectomy of the right popliteal artery. Subsequently, right lower limb reflex sympathetic dystrophy developed, which was confirmed by scintigraphy and responded well to calcitonin treatment. Typing according to the new classification of CRPS type I or II with possible nerve injury is discussed, and a short review of the literature is included.

The purpose of the study was to determine how often the thymus is visualized on whole-body radioiodine scans. One hundred and seventy-five patients had 325 diagnostic scans and 200 post-treatment scans. Activity in the mediastinum possibly consistent with the thymus was seen on seven scans in six patients.
