Navigating Supported Employment and Education Services for Youths During COVID-19 and Severe Weather Events.

In 2021, the British Columbia (BC) Interior experienced a series of unprecedented disasters, ranging from extreme heat and wildfires to catastrophic flooding and evacuations. Along with these severe weather events, BC was affected by COVID-19 outbreaks and public health restrictions. Despite these challenges, communities worked to ensure that youths who are at risk for increased mental health challenges continued to have access to services that promote well-being, such as individual placement and support programs for supported employment and education. This Open Forum presents program consider…

Addressing the public health gap in respiratory protective devices in the United States.

Public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and major wildfires have exposed significant confusion about how members of the public can effectively protect themselves from inhaling harmful airborne particles. Unlike many other nations, no single federal agency oversees respiratory protective devices (RPDs) designed for public use against inhaled contaminants. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) currently holds the authority for establishing standards and approving respirators used in workplaces; however, for public sector use, there is a lack of standards for t…

Global warming amplifies atmospheric formaldehyde exposure and widens spatial inequality.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a globally distributed ambient air pollutant associated with respiratory disease, cancer, and premature mortality, with evidence of adverse health effects even at low ambient concentrations. As a major oxidation product of volatile organic compounds, atmospheric HCHO is strongly affected by natural sources such as vegetation and wildfires, which are highly sensitive to temperature and drought. However, its response to climate warming remains poorly constrained. Here, we develop a deep learning framework that extracts empirical climate sensitivities from more than a decad…

Data Acquisition Filtering Focused on Optimizing Transmission in a LoRaWAN Network Applied to the WSN Forest Monitoring System.

Developing innovative systems and operations to monitor forests and send alerts in dangerous situations, such as fires, has become, over the years, a necessary task to protect forests. In this work, a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is employed for forest data acquisition to identify abrupt anomalies when a fire ignition starts. Even though a low-power LoRaWAN network is used, each module still needs to save power as much as possible to avoid periodic maintenance since a current consumption peak happens while sending messages. Moreover, considering the LoRaWAN characteristics, each module should

Interventions for reducing exposure to air pollution from landscape fires in a changing environment: A systematic review.

Emissions from more frequent and prolonged landscape fires (wildfires, risk reduction fires, agricultural burning) can expose populations to high levels of air pollution and exacerbate a range of health conditions. This systematic review aims to map, evaluate, and synthesise the scientific literature reporting interventions that can reduce exposure to landscape fire smoke (LFS). Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science and reviewed relevant literature published until March 2024. Thirty-three …

Natural and Technological Risk Analysis in European Cross-Border Regions: An Integrated Approach to Hazards and Vulnerability.

Natural and technological disasters often have transboundary impacts, affecting multiple countries simultaneously, while the lack of joint preparedness and coordinated response mechanisms can significantly amplify damages and complicate recovery efforts. This study proposes an integrated methodology to assess transboundary hazards and population vulnerability across European cross-border regions. The framework combines georeferenced data on extreme weather events, wildfires, industrial areas, and nuclear power plants with a population-based vulnerability analysis. The results revealed pronounc…

Exposure to climate change-related extreme events in the first year of life and occurrence of infant wheezing.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change increases the intensity and frequency of extreme events, which will most impact younger generations. Within the NINFEA birth cohort, we investigated the relationship between exposure to such events during the first year of life and infant respiratory health. METHODS: The NINFEA cohort study recruited pregnant women across 11 years in Italy, allowing for climatic variability exploitation by birth place and time. We combined geocoded addresses with climate data, to derive children's cumulative exposure to the following extreme events during their first year: (i) hea

Fabrication of polydopamine reduced CuO nanoparticle-alginate composite nanogels for management of Pseudomonas synringae pv. tabaci in tobacco.

BACKGROUND: The wildfire disease on tobacco can seriously hinder plants. Meanwhile, its pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae, can also infect over 200 plants and threat agriculture production. However, the disease usually occurs after summer rains which washes away most copper (Cu)-based bactericides, allowing the disease to invade. Therefore, we fabricate a new nanogel with high disease control and anti-erosion ability and study the effects of the reductant on the performance of the copper oxide nanoparticle (CuONP) composite nanogel. RESULTS: Polydopamine (PDA) is a polycation for both in situ re

Diffusive uptake rates for passive air sampling: Application to volatile organic compound exposure during FIREX-AQ campaign.

Passive (diffusive) sampling using sorbents is an economical and versatile method of measuring pollutants in air, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Diffusive uptake rates (UTRs) are needed for each analyte to obtain average concentrations during a specific passive sampling time duration. Here, a simultaneous active/diffusive ambient air sampling technique on Tenax®TA was employed to measure 24-hours, 7, 14 and 28-days UTRs of up to 27 VOCs, including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX), C6-C12 hydrocarbons, benzenes derivatives, tetrachloroethylene, pinenes and limonene.

A Discontinuity Analysis of the 2015 Introduction of Bushfire Prone Area Maps.

We study the introduction of wildfire risk maps, known as bushfire prone area maps, in Western Australia in 2015. Using property market transaction data and high-resolution GIS data, we apply a regression discontinuity design to examine the price differential for properties across the hazard discontinuity introduced by these maps. Results show that properties within bushfire prone areas are sold at a 4.2% lower price than those outside. Our analysis further suggests this discount is driven by an information shock, rather than pre-determined risk perception or stricter building regulations for

2024 United States Elections: Air Pollution, Neurodegeneration, Neuropsychiatric, and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Who Cares?

Air pollution exposures ought to be of significant interest for the United States (US) public as health issues will play a role in the 2024 elections. Citizens are not aware of the harmful brain impact of exposures to ubiquitous anthropogenic combustion emissions and friction-derived nanoparticles, industrial nanoplastics, the growing risk of wildfires, and the smoke plumes of soot. Ample consideration of pediatric and early adulthood hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and associations with neuropsychiatri…

Extreme Weather Events and Their Health Impacts: International Variation.

Climate change intensifies extreme weather events, and these events trigger cascading health impacts. Understanding the spatial variation of extreme weather events and their health impacts is critical for building tailored adaptation strategies. This review examines the trends in extreme weather events (including temperature extremes, floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, and wildfires), their linkages with climate change, the health impacts of these events, the global variations in the climate links and health impacts, and recommended adaptation policies. We found regional differences in obser…

Pregnancy, placentas and smoke exposure: multiple understandings of pregnant embodiment during the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires.

The health implications of prolonged wildfire smoke exposure - such as that seen during the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires - are a major concern in public health, not only in Australia but in many fire-prone areas globally. One group identified as potentially more susceptible to smoke exposure than the general population are pregnant women. Based on a study of how pregnant women and parents with newborn babies experienced the bushfire smoke event in Canberra and the NSW southeast coast, the paper examines how the placenta was figured across two domains during this time. The first domain consid

Climate-Triggered Insect Defoliators and Forest Fires Using Multitemporal Landsat and TerraClimate Data in NE Iran: An Application of GEOBIA TreeNet and Panel Data Analysis.

Despite increasing the number of studies for mapping remote sensing insect-induced forest infestations, applying novel approaches for mapping and identifying its triggers are still developing. This study was accomplished to test the performance of Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) TreeNet for discerning insect-infested forests induced by defoliators from healthy forests using Landsat 8 OLI and ancillary data in the broadleaved mixed Hyrcanian forests. Moreover, it has studied mutual associations between the intensity of forest defoliation and the severity of forest fires under Te

Mass incarceration as a climate justice issue.

The climate crisis and mass incarceration are deeply intertwined. While climate change has intensified worldwide, incarcerated populations are disproportionately at risk of experiencing poor health related to climate change through multiple hazards including extreme heat, hurricanes, and wildfires. We detail how incarcerated individuals are at a heightened risk of experiencing multiple climate-related events, how climate change worsens the health of incarcerated individuals, and how carceral infrastructure and policies worsen these impacts. We then propose next steps including (1) further rese…

Towards healthy sleep environments: Ambient, indoor, and personal exposure to PM2.5 and its implications in children's sleep health.

The growing impact of climate change and escalating wildfire seasons has led to heightened ambient air pollution, potentially affecting children's sleep health. However, current epidemiological research often relies on outdoor weather data to model the environmental impacts on sleep health, potentially mischaracterizing the actual bedroom environment. To address these challenges, we conducted experiments to investigate the relationships among ambient, indoor, and personal exposure to PM2.5 concentrations and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children. We employed computational fluid dynamics (C

Photochemical model evaluation of 2013 California wild fire air quality impacts using surface, aircraft, and satellite data.

The Rim Fire was one of the largest wildfires in California history, burning over 250,000 acres during August and September 2013 affecting air quality locally and regionally in the western U.S. Routine surface monitors, remotely sensed data, and aircraft based measurements were used to assess how well the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) photochemical grid model applied at 4 and 12 km resolution represented regional plume transport and chemical evolution during this extreme wildland fire episode. Impacts were generally similar at both grid resolutions although notable differences were s…
