Endopleura uchi (Huber) Cuatrec (Humiriaceae), known as uxi or uxi-amarelo in Brazil, is an endemic tree of the Amazon forest. In traditional medicine, its stem bark is used to treat a variety of health disorders, including cancer, diabetes, arthritis, uterine inflammation, and gynecological infections. T-box genes, in all metazoans studied from nematode to man, exist in small gene families. We have isolated and characterized cDNAs that encode a protein expressed in the axons and growth cones of a subset of Xenopus embryonic neurons. Patients with basal cell nevus syndrome have a high incidence of multiple basal cell carcinomas, medulloblastomas, and meningiomas. Because somatic PATCHED (PTCH) mutations have been found in sporadic basal cell carcinomas, we have screened for PTCH mutations in several types of sporadic extracutaneous tumors.
