Fetal and postnatal metal metabolism-related changes in brain function are associated with childhood behavioral deficits.

Exposure to neurotoxic metals early in life can disrupt brain development and increase risk of later mental health problems, but vulnerable periods and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We examined how early life exposures to mixtures of metals affect children's brain and behavior using naturally shed "baby" teeth as a biomarker of direct exposure. We studied 489 children aged 8 to 14 years and reconstructed weekly concentrations of nine metals from 20 weeks before birth to 40 weeks after birth. We assessed behavior using standardized questionnaires and measured brain structure and functio

Quality of Sibling Relationships in Maltreated Youth Residing in Out-of-Home-Care.

When children are removed from their parents's custody because of substantiated maltreatment and placed in out-of-home placements, they may be placed separately from siblings, potentially leading to even higher levels of stress in children. This possibility emerges insofar as siblings serve as a source of support during the uncertain times that accompany maltreatment and subsequent removal. We explored these issues in the present study, focusing on whether sibling relationship quality was related to post-removal behavioral functioning in maltreated children and adolescents. A total of 102 six-

Gene expression in blood is associated with risperidone response in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) often have severe behavioral problems. Not all children with these problems respond to atypical antipsychotic medications; therefore, we investigated whether peripheral blood gene expression before treatment with risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic, was associated with improvements in severe behavioral disturbances 8 weeks following risperidone treatment in 42 ASD subjects (age 112.7±51.2 months). Exon expression levels in blood before risperidone treatment were compared with pre-post risperidone change in Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Irritabili

Characteristics of physicians presenting for assessment at a behavioral health center.

Physician health and impairment have been of considerable interest in recent years. This study contributes detailed clinical data to the existing body of knowledge, by drawing from a sample of physicians assessed at a behavioral health center over a two year time frame. Demographic, referral, and clinical data were gathered using a systematic medical record review procedure, based on 108 physicians who were evaluated within an intensive multidisciplinary assessment program. The majority suffered from active substance use disorders (52.8%), with other psychiatric disorders (29.6%), and substanc

Substance use by pregnant adolescents.

Alcohol and other drug use by adolescents and adolescent pregnancy are both considered to be major problems in the United States. The risk-taking behaviors of early sexual activity and substance use are associated and are part of a larger problem behavior constellation. Although substance use by adolescents and adolescent pregnancy have both been well documented and studied, substance use by pregnant adolescents is just beginning to be studied systemically. Current studies show significant substance use both by self-report and objective testing among pregnant adolescents, with self-report alon…

Personalized Treatment in Rare Genetic Syndromes: A Case-Report in Witteveen-Kolk Syndrome (SIN3A).

INTRODUCTION: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) include a broad spectrum of disorders. NDDs caused by rare gene mutations are referred to as Rare Genetic Neurodevelopmental Syndromes (RGNS). Witteveen-Kolk syndrome (WITKOS) is such a RGNS, caused by heterozygous mutations in SIN3A and characterized by developmental problems, facial dysmorphisms, short stature, brain abnormalities, intellectual disability, and behavioral problems. Care for individuals with WITKOS mainly focuses on somatic characteristics. To address this issue, we present a case study of the first documented treatment of beha

Determination of an optimal control strategy for vaccine administration in COVID-19 pandemic treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: For decades, mathematical models have been used to predict the behavior of physical and biological systems, as well as to define strategies aiming at the minimization of the effects regarding different types of diseases. In the present days, the development of mathematical models to simulate the dynamic behavior of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is considered an important theme due to the quantity of infected people worldwide. In this work, the objective is to determine an optimal control strategy for vaccine administration in COVID-19 pandemic treatment con

Early inherited risk for anxiety moderates the association between fathers' child-centered parenting and early social inhibition.

Studies of the role of the early environment in shaping children's risk for anxiety problems have produced mixed results. It is possible that inconsistencies in previous findings result from a lack of consideration of a putative role for inherited influences moderators on the impact of early experiences. Early inherited influences not only contribute to vulnerabilities for anxiety problems throughout the lifespan, but can also modulate the ways that the early environment impacts child outcomes. In the current study, we tested the effects of child-centered parenting behaviors on putative anxiet

Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder symptoms in children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic condition. While considerable work has focused on cognitive functioning, several research groups also observed difficulties in social functioning as a prominent feature of NF1. These problems and the possible link between NF1 and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have become increasingly important in recent NF1 literature. The aim of the current study was to assess ASD characteristics in a hospital-based NF1 pediatric population (n = 82) using the standardized Children Social Behavior Questionnaire (CSBQ) and Social Responsiveness Sc

Matching adolescents with a cannabis use disorder to multidimensional family therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy: treatment effect moderators in a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In a recent randomized controlled trial (Hendriks et al., 2011), multidimensional family therapy (MDFT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) were equally effective in reducing cannabis use in adolescents (13-18 years old) with a cannabis use disorder (n=109). In a secondary analysis of the trial data, we investigated which pretreatment patient characteristics differentially predicted treatment effect in MDFT and CBT, in order to generate hypotheses for future patient-treatment matching. METHODS: The predictive value of twenty patient characteristics, in the area of demographic b

[Social Support or Social Contagion? How Patients with Eating Disorders in Inpatient Settings Affect Each Other].

OBJECTIVE: Living with others can provide social support for people with eating disorders. However, peer contagion is possible if competition arises and patients try to outdo each other in their symptomatic behavior. METHOD: In 2 qualitative studies, a total of 19 female patients were interviewed about their experiences in an inpatient setting. RESULTS: The qualitative data analysis of the problem-focused, semi-structured interviews shows opportunities but also risks; especially in groups exclusively for eating disorders. DISCUSSION: It is important to avoid labeling and focusing on symptom

Inhibition of left ventricular stimulation due to left ventricular lead failure and the left ventricular T-wave protection algorithm in patient with cardiac resynchronization therapy and pacemaker dependency.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation in patients with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is often a perplexing problem. The difficulty in the device evaluation increases in the presence of unfamiliar timing cycles and a lead dysfunction. Authors describe a special function of a Biotronik CRT devices called the left ventricle T-wave protection (LVTP), and demonstrate its behavior in a patient with left ventricular (LV) lead failure. This report shows that sometimes it might be difficult to understand the loss of resynchronization in 12-lead ECG when LVTP feature is on, and a malfunct

Violence against women: theoretical reflections.

Violence appears in different forms and circumstances and involves distinct kinds of violent acts against children, women, elderly and other defenseless persons. This serious problem, which degrades women's integrity, is denoted by terms like domestic violence, gender violence and violence against women. Gender violence can appear as physical, psychological, sexual, economic violence, as well as violence at work. Violence against women committed by their intimate partners can be analyzed through the Ecological Model, which explains the close relation between individuals and their environment.

Alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and other substance use among lesbian and bisexual women.

Relationships between sexual orientation and a wide range of substance use and problem variables were examined based on data from the 2000 National Alcohol Survey. Lesbians, bisexuals, and heterosexually identified women who report same-sex partners were compared to exclusively heterosexual women in relation to alcohol consumption, use of tobacco and other drugs, bar-going, alcohol-related problems, and past substance abuse treatment. Substance use patterns were complex and varied between sexual orientation groups. These differences underscore the importance of developing lesbian- and bisexual

Prediction of residential independence of special education high school students.

The residential independence of post-secondary students was assessed for the 2,686 interviewees of the National Longitudinal Transition Study who had left United States high schools between 1985 and the time of the questionnaire in 1987. An index of residential placement independence was the dependent variable in a regression analysis that featured 37 community, family, student, and school program characteristics entered as block-wise predictors (i.e., entered in a controlled order). Results showed a total R2 of .443, with missing data, student maladaptive ("problem") behavior, student compete

Using the Agitated Behavior Scale to Evaluate Restlessness/Agitation Following Traumatic Brain InjuryA Case Example.

Restlessness and agitation following traumatic brain injury are potential barriers to successful rehabilitation. Although there are several ways to address the problem, including environmental management, physical restraint, and medication, the type of treatment which would be most appropriate under particular circumstances has not been established. Existing treatment studies often suffer from an emphasis on anecdotal information rather than measurement of restlessness/agitation. Use of the Agitated Behavior Scale would help remedy this situation by allowing more consistent decisions about beg

A Case Study Examining Fixed Versus Randomized Criteria for Treating a Child With Conduct Problems and Callous-Unemotional Traits.

Children with conduct problems and callous unemotional traits (CPCU) seem to show a decreased response to behavioral treatment (Hawes, Price, & Dadds, 2014). It was hypothesized that children with CPCU may respond differently to behavior therapy when the target behavior criteria are fixed a priori versus when the target behavior criteria are randomly determined post hoc. A single-case study experiment was conducted as an initial step toward investigating this hypothesis. The study was conducted using a daily report card implemented in the context of an intensive behavioral summer treatment pro

Case study: sexual hyperactivity treated with psychostimulants in familial male precocious puberty.

Familial male precocious puberty is a form of precocious puberty resulting from an activating mutation of the luteinizing hormone receptor. Behavior problems are associated with the early onset of puberty. In this case, sexual hyperactivity was treated with psychostimulants. Implications for the effectiveness of methylphenidate in reducing sexual hyperactivity with and without familial male precocious puberty are discussed, and testable hypotheses are proposed for the effects of stimulants on sexual behavior in adolescents.
