Multicompartmental models and diffusion abnormalities in paediatric mild traumatic brain injury.

The underlying pathophysiology of paediatric mild traumatic brain injury and the time-course for biological recovery remains widely debated, with clinical care principally informed by subjective self-report. Similarly, clinical evidence indicates that adolescence is a risk factor for prolonged recovery, but the impact of age-at-injury on biomarkers has not been determined in large, homogeneous samples. The current study collected diffusion MRI data in consecutively recruited patients (n = 203; 8-18 years old) and age and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 170) in a prospective cohort design. Pa

[Community-informed connectomics of cortical intrinsic organization in subjective cognitive decline].

Objective: To investigate the intrinsic organization of cortical circuitry in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) via restin … twork (DAN). The WMD values in the DLPFC showed significant positive correlations with the auditory verbal learning test (AVLT)short-delayed memory (r=0.364,P=0.029),recognition memory (r=0.364, P=0.029) and the Boston naming test scores (BNT, r=0.356, P=0.033)in the SCD group. Enhanced activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus in deaf and dyslexic adults during rhyming.

Hearing developmental dyslexics and profoundly deaf individuals both have difficulties processing the internal structure of words (phonological processing) and learning to read. In hearing non-impaired readers, the development of phonological representations depends on audition. In hearing dyslexics, many argue, auditory processes may be impaired. In congenitally profoundly deaf individuals, auditory speech processing is essentially absent. Two separate literatures have previously reported enhanced activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus in both deaf and dyslexic adults when contrasted w

Subtyping of children with developmental dyslexia via bootstrap aggregated clustering and the gap statistic: comparison with the double-deficit hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The marked degree of heterogeneity in persons with developmental dyslexia has motivated the investigation of possible subtypes. Attempts have proceeded both from theoretical models of reading and the application of unsupervised learning (clustering) methods. Previous cluster analyses of data obtained from persons with reading disabilities have suffered from the inherent limitations of unsupervised learning methods. Specifically, the reliability and stability of cluster solutions have proven difficult to determine. Recent developments in the clustering literature have addressed thes

Effects of age and β-amyloid on cognitive changes in normal elderly people.

Age-related decline is common in multiple cognitive domains. β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition, a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, is also associated with cognitive changes in many older people. In this study, we examined a wide range of cognitive function in order to differentiate the effect of age and Aβ on cognition during aging. Using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with the radiotracer Pittsburgh Compound B (PIB), we classified normal older subjects as High PIB-Old and Low PIB-Old and applied sequential multivariate analyses (i.e., principal components analysis [PCA] and d

Medicaid Education and Eligibility Planning for Caregivers: Website Usability and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Most older Americans have not saved enough to cover long-term care costs. Medicaid-a public health care program for low-income individuals-can help Americans with qualifying care needs pay for assistance in a nursing home or for services in the home. Determining financial eligibility for Medicaid is complicated, and the application process is often managed by family caregivers with limited knowledge of Medicaid programs. OBJECTIVE: A one-stop digital solution is needed to help family caregivers plan for the cost of long-term care services and learn about getting help paying for se

Resting SPECT-neuropsychology correlation in very mild Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships between brain function and some of the most frequently impaired cognitive domains in the first stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD), we searched for correlation between the scores on 3 neuropsychological tests and brain perfusion, assessed by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with very mild AD. METHODS: Twenty-nine consecutive outpatients (mean age 78.2+/-5.5) affected by probable AD in the very mild phase (i.e. with a score > or =20 on the mini-mental state examination, MMSE) underwent brain SPECT with (99m)Tc-ethylcistei

[Neuropsychological impairment in the early Alzheimer's disease].

This analysis is centered on the study of cognitive disorders in Alzheimer's disease (AD), mainly for major neuro-psychological functions. We insist on the heterogeneity of the clinical picture peculiarly in the early stages of the illness, even if the deficits of episodic memory and of attentional/executive capacities are the first to deteriorate, preceding impairment in perceptual and language function and potentially having a substantial impact on the patient's capacity to cope independently. An episodic memory deficit is the hallmark of AD, but it must be stressed that this deficit may tak

Helping to solve problems associated with spina bifida: 1. Presentation of the TRS Project: organizing services for low frequency diagnostic groups and 2. Cognitive deficits often seen in young adults with spina bifida: effects in the school and work place.

1. A Presentation of the TRS Project: Counselling and (Re)habilitation Center. A Model Project in Organizing Services for Low Frequency Diagnostic Groups. Persons with low frequency disabilities often require services from a number of professions. The patient organizations claim that the patients themselves often have to coordinate their own treatment. The TRS project has been established as one of the initiatives under the Norwegian Government's Plan of Action for the Disabled. The project is one of three national projects designed to develop models for the coordination of services for person

Cognitive decline and oral health in middle-aged adults in the ARIC study.

Even before dementia becomes apparent, cognitive decline may contribute to deterioration in oral health. This cohort study of middle-aged adults evaluated associations of six-year change in cognitive function with oral health behaviors and conditions in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. Cognitive function was measured at study visits in 1990-1992 and 1996-1998 with three tests: (a) Delayed Word Recall (DWR), (b) Digit Symbol Substitution (DSS), and (c) Word Fluency (WF). Cognitive decline scores were computed as 'studentized' residuals of 1996-1998 scores regressed against
