NS3 proteins of flaviviruses contain motifs which indicate that they possess protease and helicase activities. The helicases are members of the DExD/H box helicase superfamily and NS3 proteins from some flaviviruses have been shown to possess ATPase and helicase activities in vitro. This study shows that glycosaminoglycans promote muscle reinnervation following neonatal sciatic nerve injury. Such an effect appears to be mediated by insulin-like growth factor-1. The mRNA for insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in the submandibular gland of mature and developing rats was examined by Northern blotting and in situ hybridization with an oligonucleotide probe. We present our strategy and progress towards the identification of rare restriction fragment length variants (RFLVs) segregating with the fragile-X syndrome. DNA from a carrier mother and two retarded sons was digested with 7 restriction endonucleases and Southern blots were probed with cloned unique X-chromosomal sequences. Treatment with cyclophosphamide and antithymocyte serum (ATS) did not significantly increase the susceptibility of mice to bluetongue virus infections of the nervous system. Cyclophosphamide actually inhibited virus growth in newborn and 2-week-old mice and, in newborn mice, diminished the severity of virus-induced pathologic sequelae. Eighteen chronic knee effusions unresponsive to the usual methods of therapy were treated by intra-articular injections of radioactive gold ((198)Au) and followed up for one year. Ten patients had classical rheumatoid arthritis; three intermittent hydrarthrosis (both knees were treated in one patient); two ankylosing spondylitis, and one synovitis of undetermined cause. In 12 knees the effusion completely disappeared, usually within three months. Temporary increased pain and swelling occurred during the first week in five cases. Radiation dosimetry is discussed in detail.
