Association between Helicobacter pylori infection and thyroid dysfunction in adults visiting a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection are both highly prevalent in Pakistan. Several studies have proposed a potential immunological link between H. pylori infection and autoimmune thyroid disease, though evidence remains controversial. Given the cross-sectional design of this study, causal relationships cannot be inferred; the objective was to determine whether a statistically significant association exists between H. pylori infection and thyroid dysfunction in adults attending a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS: A cross-sectional s

Access to Healthcare in Thailand During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Interview Study of Migrants From Myanmar.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore how the military coup, COVID-19, and limited healthcare access affected the health and well-being of Myanmar migrants. BACKGROUND: Myanmar is among the poorest countries in Southeast Asia. The combined effects of COVID-19, political instability, and civil conflict have created a humanitarian crisis, resulting in migrants having severely restricted access to food, water, healthcare, and basic rights. DESIGN: A qualitative interview study. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 32 Myanmar migrants living in Thailand (M = 38.5 yea

Polytrauma in the elderly: who is at risk? A case-control study.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: The elderly population of developing countries is increasing rapidly. Complicating this demographic development, elderly patients are at high risk for injuries that result in polytrauma and tend to experience worse outcomes when such injuries occur. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and identify risk factors for polytrauma in the elderly population (≥ 65 years). METHODS: The following case-control study used the Trauma Registry Database of the University Hospital Bern to extract the case group, consisting of elderly polytrauma patients (ISS ≥ 16). The control

Inertia or unanticipated bottlenecks? Exploring stakeholder perspectives on the implementation determinants of the national alcohol policy five years post-enactment in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use accounts for a huge proportion of the global burden of disease, and many countries grapple with its severe negative social and health consequences. In 2018, Zambia adopted a national alcohol policy with the aim to reduce the prevalence and impact of harmful alcohol use. However, five years post-adoption, the policy implementation has been slow. This study sought to explore the implementation determinants of the national alcohol policy five years post-enactment in Zambia. Implementation determinants, a concept from Bullocks theoretical framework, refer to the enabling an

Addressing viral hepatitis C reinfections in a low-threshold programme for people who inject drugs in Slovenia.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remains a public health threat. Although therapy with direct-acting antivirals made its elimination possible, major challenges remain in treating vulnerable populations, such as people who inject drugs (PWID) enrolled in low-threshold programmes (LTPs). This study analysed the outcome of HCV management focused on HCV reinfection in a specifically designed model-of-care (MoC) for PWID in Slovenia, where treatment is prescribed without limitations, though only by specialist physicians. METHODS: All HCV antibody (anti-HCV) positive users of a MoC, co

A qualitative analysis exploring barriers and enablers to distribution, delivery, and access to COVID-19 vaccines in Botswana.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted pre-existing weaknesses, revealing deep-rooted issues in infrastructure, access, and resource allocation that have long impeded African countries' ability to effectively meet population health needs. It also became evident during the pandemic that there were discrepancies in how vaccines were distributed, delivered and accessed in these countries. We aimed to identify vaccine distribution, service delivery processes and related barriers in Botswana to contextually explore practices that either enhance or hinder access and equity in vaccine distri

Political determinants of cervical cancer control in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer (CC) is the most common and second-most deadly cancer among Peruvian women, despite national authorities' sustained political and budgetary efforts to improve Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, screening for early detection of cervical cancer, and making treatment more accessible. Considering the importance of the health system in CC prevention and control, this article examines the role of the health system as a whole in the CC screening in Peru, a dimension that previous studies have not comprehensively covered. To this end, this article utilizes the WHO's bu

Obstetric and Neonatal Outcomes in Patients With Maternal Myasthenia Gravis: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Muscle weakness, autoantibodies, and medication use in myasthenia gravis (MG) can complicate pregnancy and delivery. Vaginal delivery is encouraged despite increased risk of acute operative delivery. Our aim was to assess childbirth outcomes related to MG in a current, unselected, nationwide birth cohort. METHODS: This cohort study included all singleton births in the Medical Birth Registry of Norway from 1999 to 2022. Maternal MG, defined as MG diagnosis or pyridostigmine use, was identified from current and previous pregnancies. We compared adverse pregnancy, deli

Born Too Soon: Care for small and sick newborns, evidence for investment and implementation.

PROGRESS: Over the past decade, the world has made policy progress for newborns including the first global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.2 (< 12 neonatal deaths per 1000 live births) and the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP). However, gaps remain for investment and action, especially for babies born too soon, too small, or who become sick. An estimated 20-30 million newborns have life-threatening conditions requiring hospital care each year. Annually, approximately 2.3 million newborns die during the neonatal period, the majority being preterm. A further 1 million newborn survivor

Preterm birth in Mogadishu, Somalia: Burden and determinants from a retrospective cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth, delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, affects 15 million births globally and causes 1.1 million under-five deaths annually. In Somalia, decades of civil war have severely weakened the healthcare infrastructure, posing significant challenges to maternal and neonatal healthcare. However, data on preterm birth and its determinants in Somalia remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the prevalence and determinants of preterm birth among women delivered at the Mogadishu Somali Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan Training and Research Hospital. DESIGN: Retrospective cro

Global and regional causes of maternal deaths 2009-20: a WHO systematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality is not on track to meet Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.1 of a global maternal mortality ratio below 70 per 100 000 livebirths by 2030. Updated evidence on causes of death is needed to accelerate progress. METHODS: We conducted a multi-strategy systematic review to identify causes of maternal deaths occurring in 2009-20. Data sources included civil registration and vital statistics systems data from the WHO Mortality Database, reports published by Member States, and national and subnational journal articles identified via bibliographic databases. Sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness in police officers from Kerala, India.

BACKGROUND: Globally, poor sleep is a significant public health problem. Healthy sleep is important for physical and mental well-being, particularly for individuals who work in environments with shift schedules. However, this issue has not been adequately addressed, especially in low-and-middle-income settings. This study examined sleep apnea and excessive daytime sleepiness among police officers in Kerala, India, and explored the factors associated with these conditions. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, we collected data from 253 police officers selected from 14 police stations

Injection‑induced sciatic nerve injuries in Turkey: a public health and patient safety analysis of Supreme Court decisions.

BACKGROUND: Intramuscular injections are routine interventions worldwide, yet when executed incorrectly they can cause sciatic nerve injury (SNI) that leaves patients with lifelong motor-sensory disability. Although international guidelines recommend the ventrogluteal site, the dorsogluteal region remains dominant in Turkey, potentially elevating risk. This study analysed Turkish Supreme Court decisions on injection-induced SNI from public-health, ethical and legal perspectives. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional content analysis of all publicly available Supreme Court crim

Enhancing protection against vector-borne diseases in forcibly displaced communities: evaluating the efficacy of spatial repellents for cutaneous leishmaniasis control in North-East Syria.

BACKGROUND: In Syria, during the 14 years after the outbreak of civil war, 16.7 million people have been forced to flee their homes, of which 7.2 million remain internally displaced in 2025. Breakdown in waste management caused by aerial bombardment has created ideal conditions for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) transmission, vectored by phlebotomine sandflies. Displaced populations reside in flimsy shelters where conventional vector control tools are operationally unfeasible. A small, lightweight, portable transfluthrin-based spatial repellent (Mosquito Shield™) has been developed which may cir

Stakeholders influence to reduce vitamin A deficiency in children aged 15 to 23 months in Iran: an analysis of stakeholders and networking.

UNLABELLED: AIME: Vitamin A deficiency remains a significant public health concern in developing countries, substantially contributing to morbidity and mortality among young children. In Iran, the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency among children aged 15 to 23 months increased during the decade from 2002 to 2012, mostly due to socio-economic reasons. Given the complexity of managing this deficiency, multiple stakeholders are involved in its prevention and treatment. The objective of this study is to identify these stakeholders and assess their interests, influence, and interconnections to enha

Social and behavioural considerations for responding to Anopheles stephensi in Africa: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles stephensi has been identified in multiple African countries over the past decade. Unlike malaria vectors endemic to Africa, invasive An. stephensi shares characteristics with Aedes aegypti, including laying eggs in artificial containers near human dwellings, particularly in urban areas. These characteristics pose a threat to malaria control and elimination and shape needed interventions, including the role of individuals, households, and communities. Due to the urgency to develop strategies for the African context, this scoping review sought to identify social and behavio
