Follow-up and prospective studies of the classification of liver disease.

Two hundred patients with different liver diseases were observed during a period of 6-8 years. The diagnosis at the first hospitalization wa … al data. Allocation by discriminant analysis was therefore in good agreement with the morphological classification. The follow-up study showed that several patients with initially atypical patterns of clinical chemical results had their diagnosis changed. In 35 patients with the final diagnosis of chronic active hepatitis (CAH) or primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) …

Classification and functional management of congenital central defect of the hand.

Classification of central defect of the hand includes three general categories--Type I (typical), Type II (atypical), and Type III (two, three, and four digit hand). These three types of central defect have one common denominator--central metacarpal deficiency or absence. Otherwise, these three distinct types differ completely in inheritance pattern, characteristic features, bilaterality, and functional management. Functional management of the Type I central defect combines release of the tethered thumb metacarpal from its adduction contracture and simultaneous closure of the cleft using that …

Development of the human pancreas: variations and pathology. A tentative classification.

The pathology of the pancreas is sometimes related to the embryological development of the organ. The first part of this paper is a presentation of the embryology, morphogenesis and cytogenesis of the pancreas. A tentative classification is then proposed to group together the lesions directly related to anomalies of the position and differentiation of the pancreatic buds. Pathological processes affecting the pancreas can be divided into those related to the ducts and those related to the parenchyma of the gland. In each case anomalies arising at a given stage of development lead to different d…

Sonographic diagnosis and classification of anomalies of the female genital tract.

A retrospective study of 68 female patients with sonographic diagnoses of genital tract anomalies was done. Corroboration by hysterosalpingography and/or surgery was available in 47 cases (69 per cent) and by visualization of two cervices on physical examination in three cases (4 per cent). Scan results are categorized as diagnostic, confirmatory, and incorrect. The 50 patients were placed in the following proposed categories: segmental mullerian agenesis (four cases); "peculiar appearing" uterus (three cases); uterus didelphys (19 cases); bicornuate and septate uterus (22 cases); obstructed l

[Classification and clinical assessment of postoperative functions in anorectal anomalies].

There were some problems in International Classification of Anorectal Anomalies. Recto-Urethral Fistula: The level of recto-urethral Fistule and that rectal pouch are different from case to case. Hypertrophied genital folds: this has no value in the diagnosis of low type. Recently the Japan Study Group of Anorectal Anomalies has proposed clinical score, which is based on four parameters, rectal sensation, continence, constipation and soiling. But this score has also some problems. We have proposed a new clinical assessment.

The classification of acute leukaemia (AL) and its clinical significance.

The combination of morphological, cytochemical and immunological methods has resulted in a reproducible and more objective classification of AL. Several of the AML-FAB subtypes (M2, M3 and M5) correlate with specific chromosome abnormalities and are associated with distinct clinical and laboratory features. The classification of ALL based on morphology (FAB types L1, L2 and L3) has been shown to have prognostic value. The heterogeneity of ALL is better recognised by membrane marker analysis, now improved by the use of monoclonal antibodies. The enzyme terminal transferase is the best marker fo…

Classification of femoral neck fractures in the elderly as pathologic fractures.

The following distinctions can be made between fractures of the femoral neck in elderly persons and similar fractures in younger patients: They are much more common in the elderly. They are more frequent in females than in males. There is a much higher incidence in the white than in the black population. Fractures of the opposite hip are more common in the elderly. Associated medical conditions in the elderly may make the patient more susceptible to falls and may increase the degree of osteopenia. There is a high rate of mortality in elderly patients within 1 year of the fracture. Minor trauma

Lumbar spinal stenosis and pseudostenosis. Definition and classification of pathology.

The concept of lumbar stenosis is defined and a classification of the diverse types is proposed. This is based on a correlation of the findings at operation with those of radiographs and axial tomography in patients with spinal stenosis or with disc hernia in a narrow spinal canal. The spinal canal can only be considered stenosed if the osseous canal is narrowed to the point at which it causes compression of the dural sac with or without nerve root involvement. Lumbar spinal stenosis can be divided into: Stenosis of the spinal canal, stenosis of the root canal, and stenosis of the intervertebr…

Classification and associations of hyprochondriasis in patients from a psychiatric hospital.

This study investigated the application of two commonly used classification systems for hypochondriacal patients from a psychiatric hospital as well as other aspects of their condition. Twenty patients with marked hypochondriacal features were examined. One satisfied criteria of the diagnosis of primary hypochondriasis and nine more had secondary diagnoses of hypochondriasis or somatization disorder. It is suggested that a secondary diagnosis of hypochondriasis would be useful for those patients with marked hypochondriacal features who have other psychiatric disorders and are at present exclud…

[Anamnestic and urometric classification of 185 cases of urinary incontinence].

Standard interviews were obtained from 185 women with urinary incontinence over three years to collect information about their individual complaints. All probands then were urometrically examined. The selection had been by negative criteria, as 40.5 per cent of the women had undergone one or several unsuccessful operations earlier in the past. Information based on case histories was grouped by three categories of complaint; only stress symptoms (n = 66), stress and urge symptoms (n = 116), only urge symptoms (n = 3). The following findings were obtained, in terms of ICS classification, by urom…

The 1982 revised criteria for the classification of systemic lupus erythematosus.

The 1971 preliminary criteria for the classification of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were revised and updated to incorporate new immunologic knowledge and improve disease classification. The 1982 revised criteria include fluorescence antinuclear antibody and antibody to native DNA and Sm antigen. Some criteria involving the same organ systems were aggregated into single criteria. Raynaud's phenomenon and alopecia were not included in the 1982 revised criteria because of low sensitivity and specificity. The new criteria were 96% sensitive and 96% specific when tested with SLE and control …

Classification of human leukemia by membrane antigen analysis with xenoantisera.

Rabbit and monkey antisera after appropriate absorption were rendered specific for normal or leukemic lymphoid- and myeloid-associated antig … diagnosis of either acute lymphoblastic leukemia or acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. The serological classification of these patients using the five types of antisera listed above were consistent with the consensus diagnosis. In addition, the lymphoid cancers were further subclassified as to T-, B-, or thymus antigen types. There was no consensus lymphoid versus …

Classification of gynecologic flow cytometry data: a comparison of methods.

Several discriminant function methods for automatically classifying flow cytometry data from human cervical material were developed and compared with previously published methods using a sample of 186 specimens. The misclassification rates (approximately 20%) were similar to those of other published techniques for classifying these data. The methods misclassify different cases, however. The apparent system performance appears to be limited by at least three factors: (1) use of too small a sample in constructing classification algorithms, (2) poor "visibility" of small numbers of abnormal cells…

Determination of the Catterall classification in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

Fifty hips in forty-four children with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, treated at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, San Francisco, were evaluated with a simplified method of Catterall's classification. Our data indicate that the Catterall rating changed in 40 per cent of the hips when they were classified before they had reached the fragmentation stage of Waldenström compared with only 6 per cent when they were classified after fragmentation had occurred.

Use of the respiratory magnetometer in diagnosis and classification of sleep apnea.

Seventeen patients with sleep apnea were studied with reference to the frequency and duration of apneic episodies, the mechanism of the apnea and the extent to which oxygen saturation was depressed by the apnea. In all patients, esophageal pressure was recorded simultaneously with respiratory magnetometer records of rib cage and abdominal motion. Thermistor records from the nose and mouth indicated the presence of apnea. Nine patients had purely obstructive apnea and eight a mixture of central and obstructive apnea. In all instances the magnetometer records alone permitted distinction between
