A novel method for measuring and monitoring monobloc distraction osteogenesis using three-dimensional computed tomography rendered images with the "biporion-dorsum sellae" plane. Part II: comparison of measurements before and after distraction.

The aim was to assess the stability of monobloc distraction osteogenesis using three-dimensional computed tomographic (CT) scan volume-rendered images with the "biporion-dorsum sellae" plane. This was a prospective study of patients undergoing monobloc internal distraction osteogenesis at the International Craniofacial Institute, Dallas, TX. Measurements were made of the perpendicular distance of 8 skeletal facial points to the static "biporion-dorsum sellae" plane. The statistical analyses were performed with the paired-samples t test in SPSS. Three male patients were included in the study. O

Computed tomography and computed tomography dacryocystography imaging characteristics of lacrimal sac cysts in adults: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Lacrimal sac cysts (LSCs) are rare lacrimal drainage system (LDS) lesions that often present as medial canthal masses or epiphoras in adults. Computed tomography (CT) and computed tomography dacryocystography (CT-DCG) can aid in the diagnosis of LDS; however, the literature is limited to case reports and adult systematic studies, and discriminative imaging pattern and LDS anatomical change analyses are lacking, hindering treatment. Thus, this study sought to analyze the CT/CT-DCG features and LDS anatomy of adults to address these gaps in the literature. METHODS: This single-cente

The biomechanics of chewing and suckling in the infant: A potential mechanism for physiologic metopic suture closure.

Craniosynostosis is a condition with neurologic and aesthetic sequelae requiring invasive surgery. Understanding its pathobiology requires f … reased degree of metopic suture closure correlated with higher maximum principal strains across the frontal bone and mid-face, a strain regime not observed in models of severe metopic craniosynostosis. In summary, our work provides human evidence that bone strain patterns from chewing and suckling correlate with the physiologically early closure pattern of the …

Maxillofacial surgery in wartime Middle-East: Paul Tessier's missions to Iran.

The Iraq-Iran war (1980-88) resulted in numerous maxillofacial injuries. More than 400,000 people were wounded and required specialist care. Paul Tessier, a leading French plastic surgeon and pioneering craniofacial surgeon, was involved in several missions to Iran and operated on a vast cohort of patients with complex war trauma sequelae. Our study included 322 files relating to patients with war injuries operated on by Paul Tessier in Iran from 1990 to 1993. The files were the property of the Association Française des Chirurgiens de la Face. Relevant epidemiological parameters and data on su

Patient specific instrumentation versus conventional knee arthroplasty: comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The key to a successful knee replacement is restoring normal kinematics with a neutral alignment, thus a hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle of 180° (within 3° limits). Conventional TKR is proven to have excellent results but relies in extensive visual referencing of bony landmarks. Customised cutting blocks provide accurate bone cuts, also lowering the risk of fat embolism, blood loss and operating time. METHOD: We share our experience comparing two different TKA techniques using patient specific instrumentation (PSI) with the Visionaire knee and conventional instrumentation (CVI) from th

Radiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry-based measurement of bone mineral density in patients with severe motor and intellectual disability: An opportunity for patients with severe scoliosis and hip dislocation.

PURPOSE: Radiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry (REMS) is an ultrasound technology currently used for the densitometric evaluation of osteoporosis and has been validated against dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. However, the use of REMS for bone densitometry in patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) remains to be reported. This study aimed to investigate whether REMS technology can be used for densitometric evaluation of osteoporosis in patients with SMID with hip dislocation and severe scoliosis. METHODS: Sixty-five patients with SMID, who resided in a long-te

Regression of brain metastases from breast carcinoma after chemotherapy with bendamustine.

PURPOSE: Bendamustinehydrochloride (bendamustine) is an alkylator with anticipated antimetabolic activity. It has shown activity in malignant lymphoma and breast cancer. Up to now there are no reports about the activity of bendamustine in the treatment of brain metastases. We report on a 38-year-old woman with brain metastases from breast cancer. The first diagnosis of an invasive ductal, hormone receptor negative breast cancer was made in October 1997, stage pT1c pN2 (11/11)cM0 - G3. After lumpectomy and resection of axillary lymph nodes, the patient received adjuvant chemo- and radiotherapy.

The supraorbital eyebrow approach in children: clinical outcomes, cosmetic results, and complications.

OBJECT: The supraorbital eyebrow approach utilizes an eyebrow skin incision to fashion a supraorbital craniotomy for exposure of the subfrontal corridor. This provides anterolateral access to surgical lesions in the anterior cranial fossa, parasellar regions, brainstem, and medial temporal lobe. With use of the endoscope, further areas can be accessed. This approach has been applied effectively in adults, but questions remain about its use in children-specifically with regard to adequate working space, effectiveness for achieving the desired results, cosmesis, and complications. METHODS: The

Nerve structures at risk in the plantar side of the foot during anterior tibial tendon transfer: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Anterior tibial tendon transfer is a common procedure for treatment of clubfoot recurrence. Fixation of the tendon usually includes passing the tendon through the lateral cuneiform. Drilling the bone and passing sutures through the plantar aspect of the foot may cause neurovascular damage. METHODS: Anterior tibial tendon transfer was performed through the lateral cuneiform in twelve cadaveric limbs. Drill holes were made perpendicular to the lateral cuneiform surface (group A), made perpendicular to the weight-bearing surface (group B), inclined 15° in the frontal and sagittal pla

Effect of antiresorptive drugs on bony turnover in the jaw: denosumab compared with bisphosphonates.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw as a result of treatment with receptor activators of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) inhibitors (denosumab) is a new type of bony necrosis, the exact pathogenesis of which is unknown. Our aim was to find out whether the turnover of bone in the jaw is increased after denosumab has been given compared with other skeletal sites, and if that turnover might have a role in denosumab-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (DRONJ). Bone scintigraphic images of 45 female patients with breast cancer and bone metastases were analysed retrospectively, and divided into 3 groups: th
