[Dynamic paradigm in psychopathology: "chaos theory", from physics to psychiatry].

For the last thirty years, progress in the field of physics, known as "Chaos theory"--or more precisely: non-linear dynamical systems theory--has increased our understanding of complex systems dynamics. This framework's formalism is general enough to be applied in other domains, such as biology or psychology, where complex systems are the rule rather than the exception. Our goal is to show here that this framework can become a valuable tool in scientific fields such as neuroscience and psychiatry where objects possess natural time dependency (i.e. dynamical properties) and non-linear character

Brain-computer-interface-based intervention increases brain functional segregation in cognitively normal older adults.

Brain-computer interface (BCI)-based cognitive training systems have shown promise in enhancing cognitive performance in cognitively normal older adults. However, the brain network changes underlying these behavioural improvements remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated topological alterations in intrinsic brain functional networks following BCI-based training and their behavioural relevance in cognitively normal older adults using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph theoretical analysis. Compared to a non-intervention waitlist (WL) group, the i

Three-Dimensional Liver Image Segmentation Using Generative Adversarial Networks Based on Feature Restoration.

Medical imaging provides a powerful tool for medical diagnosis. In the process of computer-aided diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer based on medical imaging, accurate segmentation of liver region from abdominal CT images is an important step. However, due to defects of liver tissue and limitations of CT imaging procession, the gray level of liver region in CT image is heterogeneous, and the boundary between the liver and those of adjacent tissues and organs is blurred, which makes the liver segmentation an extremely difficult task. In this study, aiming at solving the problem of low segme

Dehaze of Cataractous Retinal Images Using an Unpaired Generative Adversarial Network.

Cataracts are the leading cause of visual impairment worldwide. Examination of the retina through cataracts using a fundus camera is challenging and error-prone due to degraded image quality. We sought to develop an algorithm to dehaze such images to support diagnosis by either ophthalmologists or computer-aided diagnosis systems. Based on the generative adversarial network (GAN) concept, we designed two neural networks: CataractSimGAN and CataractDehazeNet. CataractSimGAN was intended for the synthesis of cataract-like images through unpaired clear retinal images and cataract images. Cataract

Hybrid two-stage CNN for detection and staging of periodontitis on panoramic radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition causing chronic damage to the tooth-supporting connective tissues, leading to tooth loss in adults. Diagnosing periodontitis requires clinical and radiographic examinations, with panoramic radiographs crucial in identifying and assessing its severity and staging. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a deep learning method for visual data analysis, and Dense Convolutional Networks (DenseNet), which utilize direct feed-forward connections between layers, enable high-performance computer vision tasks with reduced computational demands.

Imaging-genetics-based dementia risk prediction using deep survival neural networks in the Rotterdam Study.

Accurate dementia risk prediction is challenging, and may be facilitated by better use of imaging and genetic data, including their complex interactions. We explored using deep survival neural networks to integrate these multi-modal, high-dimensional data. We included 3521 Rotterdam Study participants, 6340 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, with follow-up clinical diagnosis for dementia, and used 515 samples from Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) as an external validation. Genetic data included APOE-ε4 status and 76 additional SNPs. We developed models combining Convolut

Explainable AI for gait speed analysis from multimodal data fusion.

Gait speed analysis is vital for applications in healthcare, rehabilitation, human-robot interaction, and autonomous systems, necessitating robust methods to address its complexity. This study introduces an advanced framework for gait speed classification through multimodal data fusion and deep learning, optimized using Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP). Utilizing a publicly available 4 datasets of 50 injury-free adults walking at varying speeds, we integrate data from full-body motion capture, electromyography (EMG), and force plates to capture detailed gait dynamics. We propose two nove

Actinic keratosis staging in multimodal image data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Actinic Keratosis (AK) is a common skin condition, usually appearing on sun-exposed areas, whose progression is associated with characteristic dermatoscopic and structural changes. Early detection of AK is crucial, as cancer progression may occur in changed skin. This study aimed to develop a multimodal, machine-learning-based framework combining dermatoscopic and high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) data to automatically stage AK and identify early lesions. METHODS: A dataset containing 222 pairs of dermatoscopic and HFUS images was clinically evaluated using the 3-poin

Prediction of Pharmacoresistance in Drug-Naïve Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Using Ictal EEGs Based on Convolutional Neural Network.

Approximately 30%-40% of epilepsy patients do not respond well to adequate anti-seizure medications (ASMs), a condition known as pharmacoresistant epilepsy. The management of pharmacoresistant epilepsy remains an intractable issue in the clinic. Its early prediction is important for prevention and diagnosis. However, it still lacks effective predictors and approaches. Here, a classical model of pharmacoresistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) was established to screen pharmacoresistant and pharmaco-responsive individuals by applying phenytoin to amygdaloid-kindled rats. Ictal electroencephalogra

Early diagnosis model of mycosis fungoides and five inflammatory skin diseases based on a multimodal data-based convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and early-stage MF is difficult to differentiate from erythematous inflammatory disease. With the exception of biopsy, noninvasive information such as a patient's medical history and clinical and dermoscopic images is of great significance for early diagnosis of MF. However, there is a lack of diagnostic models based on convolutional neural networks that can use multimodal information. OBJECTIVES: To develop an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning model based on multimodal information, to verify its

A convolutional neural network-based system for identifying neuroendocrine neoplasms and multiple types of lesions in the pancreas using EUS (with videos).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: EUS is sensitive in detecting pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (pNEN). However, the endoscopic diagnosis of pNEN is operator-dependent and time-consuming because pNEN mimics normal pancreas and other pancreatic lesions. We intended to develop a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based system, named iEUS, for identifying pNEN and multiple types of pancreatic lesions using EUS. METHODS: Retrospective data of 12,200 EUS images obtained from pNEN and non-pNEN pancreatic lesions, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), and pancreatic

LGF-Net: A multi-scale feature fusion network for thyroid nodule ultrasound image classification.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid cancer is one of the most common cancers in clinical practice, and accurate classification of thyroid nodule ultrasound images is crucial for computer-aided diagnosis. Models based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) or a transformer struggle to integrate local and global features, which impacts the recognition accuracy. PURPOSE: Our method is designed to capture both the key local fine-grained features and the global spatial features essential for thyroid nodule diagnosis simultaneously. It adapts to the irregular morphology of thyroid nodules, dynamically focuses on

Deep Semantic Segmentation of Kidney and Space-Occupying Lesion Area Based on SCNN and ResNet Models Combined with SIFT-Flow Algorithm.

Renal segmentation is one of the most fundamental and challenging task in computer aided diagnosis systems. In order to overcome the shortcomings of automatic kidney segmentation based on deep network for abdominal CT images, a two-stage semantic segmentation of kidney and space-occupying lesion area based on SCNN and ResNet models combined with SIFT-flow transformation is proposed in paper, which is divided into two stages: image retrieval and semantic segmentation. To facilitate the image retrieval, a metric learning-based approach is firstly adopted to construct a deep convolutional neural

Noisy models of the ventral stream reveal the impact of recurrence and learned representations on information processing timescales.

In vision neuroscience, the temporal dynamics of the sensory stream and of its neural representations are thought to be deeply linked to the function of the hierarchy of cortical areas that deal with object recognition, known as the visual ventral stream. Neural representations that are invariant under identity-preserving object transformations, and therefore allow for efficient learning of object identity, are theorized to emerge from a self-supervised learning process that attempts to extract "temporally stable" features from the sensory input. Conversely, invariance increases along the hier

Interpreting Convolutional Neural Networks in Population Genetics.

Machine learning approaches have become a powerful alternative to traditional methods in population genetics. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in particular have been successful in inferring natural selection, recombination rates, introgression, dispersal distances, and effective population size changes. One limitation of CNNs and other deep learning methods is that they can be difficult to interpret. When they have been shown to be as or more successful than summary-statistic-based methods, what are they learning? Here we investigate CNNs from two different methods: the  pg-gan discrimina

Sleep, circadian rhythms, chronobiology, and neural synchrony: Integrative mechanisms in brain function, health, and disease.

Sleep and circadian rhythms are crucial for regulating metabolism, cognitive function, and nightly brain repair. Chronobiology studies these biological timing systems by focusing on mechanisms such as neural synchrony, which underlies coordinated brain wave patterns that support transitions between sleep stages, memory encoding, and cognitive performance. Recent work in genetics, brain imaging, and computational modeling has uncovered specific pathways connecting circadian clocks to sleep regulation and neural network synchronization. For example, clock genes drive rhythmic cellular activity,

Stimulus representation in human frontal cortex supports flexible control in working memory.

When holding visual information temporarily in working memory (WM), the neural representation of the memorandum is distributed across various cortical regions, including visual and frontal cortices. However, the role of stimulus representation in visual and frontal cortices during WM has been controversial. Here, we tested the hypothesis that stimulus representation persists in the frontal cortex to facilitate flexible control demands in WM. During functional MRI, participants flexibly switched between simple WM maintenance of visual stimulus or more complex rule-based categorization of mainta

OTMorph: Unsupervised Multi-Domain Abdominal Medical Image Registration Using Neural Optimal Transport.

Deformable image registration is one of the essential processes in analyzing medical images. In particular, when diagnosing abdominal diseases such as hepatic cancer and lymphoma, multi-domain images scanned from different modalities or different imaging protocols are often used. However, they are not aligned due to scanning times, patient breathing, movement, etc. Although recent learning-based approaches can provide deformations in real-time with high performance, multi-domain abdominal image registration using deep learning is still challenging since the images in different domains have dif

CBCT-guided adaptive radiotherapy using self-supervised sequential domain adaptation with uncertainty estimation.

Adaptive radiotherapy (ART) is an advanced technology in modern cancer treatment that incorporates progressive changes in patient anatomy into active plan/dose adaption during the fractionated treatment. However, the clinical application relies on the accurate segmentation of cancer tumors on low-quality on-board images, which has posed challenges for both manual delineation and deep learning-based models. In this paper, we propose a novel sequence transduction deep neural network with an attention mechanism to learn the shrinkage of the cancer tumor based on patients' weekly cone-beam compute

Recurrent Saliency Transformation Network for Tiny Target Segmentation in Abdominal CT Scans.

We aim at segmenting a wide variety of organs, including tiny targets (e.g., adrenal gland), and neoplasms (e.g., pancreatic cyst), from abdominal CT scans. This is a challenging task in two aspects. First, some organs (e.g., the pancreas), are highly variable in both anatomy and geometry, and thus very difficult to depict. Second, the neoplasms often vary a lot in its size, shape, as well as its location within the organ. Third, the targets (organs and neoplasms) can be considerably small compared to the human body, and so standard deep networks for segmentation are often less sensitive to th
