This 65 year-old woman, 1 month postoperative after maxillary sinus carcinoma (pT4N0cM0) excision and reconstruction, presented with significant left facial clear fluid wound leakage. A salivary or cerebrospinal leakage was suspected. Fluid analysis, CT, and MRI were noncontributory. Dynamic salivary scintigraphy with SPECT-CT allowed for the detection and localization of the leakage from the left parotid gland. Radioactive dose rate of the wound bandage was 50 μSv/h compared with 0.05 μSv/h for background and confirmed the diagnosis. Left total parotidectomy resulted in resolution.

INTRODUCTION: Low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a distinctive variant of fibrosarcoma. We recently experienced a rare case of low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma arising in the masseter muscle.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old Korean woman with a large growing mass in her right parotid gland area for 1 year visited our clinic. Complete removal of the tumor was achieved by parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. The tumor measured over 4cm with pathologic findings compatible with low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma.
CONCLUSIONS: Low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is an extremely rare tumor, and report of

Frey syndrome (FS) is a commonly documented postoperative complication following parotidectomy. The aim of this study was to clinically evaluate the efficacy of superficial temporal fascia (STF) as interpositioning barrier between the overlying skin flap and the parotid bed for the prevention of FS following superficial parotidectomy. A retrospective study was designed involving a population of patients from a single institution who underwent superficial parotidectomy for parotid tumours and refractory chronic sialadenitis from 2008 to 2011. Forty-eight cases were identified and divided into t

AIM: To report the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and corresponding histopathological features of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) originating in the parotid gland.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MRI images of seven patients with histopathologically proven SCC originating in the parotid gland were reviewed retrospectively, with an emphasis on tumour size, shape, contour definition, extraparotid infiltration, signal characteristics, and the presence of central necrosis. These were correlated with the microscopic findings of the surgical specimens.
RESULTS: The tumours ranged in size from 3.9-7 cm

PURPOSE: Xerostomia (dry mouth), secondary to irradiation of the parotid glands, is one of the most common side effects of head-and-neck cancer radiotherapy. Diagnostic tools able to accurately and efficiently measure parotid gland injury have yet to be introduced into the clinic. This study's purpose is to investigate sonographic textural features as potential imaging signatures for quantitative assessment of parotid-gland injury after head-and-neck radiotherapy.
METHODS: The authors have investigated a series of sonographic features obtained from the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) -

This study reports the clinical and MR features of salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) of the parotid gland, which is a rare and highly malignant tumour. We assessed retrospectively the clinical and MR features of six patients with histologically proven SDC of the parotid gland. The five men and one woman, ranging in age from 65-71 years (mean, 67 years), had undergone MRI before surgery. All patients presented with parotid masses and four patients had facial paralysis. Two had been aware of the parotid mass for more than 10 years. On MRI, all of the tumours had an ill-defined margin along either th

Frey syndrome is manifested clinically by hemifacial flushing and sweating after a gustatory stimulus. Frey syndrome is usually secondary to traumatic injury in the parotid region and is thought to be the result of misdirected re-sprouting of damaged autonomic nerve fibres. In this case report, we highlight the clinical and psychosocial aspects of Frey syndrome from a patient"s perspective, outline the pathophysiology of the condition and current management strategies, and describe the use of botulinum neurotoxin in the treatment of Frey syndrome.

A 64-year-old Japanese woman suffering from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura was treated with prednisolone. During the course of steroid withdrawal she developed parotid gland enlargement and cervical lymph node swelling with multiple dome-shaped red papules on her trunk and upper limbs. On admission the patient was found to have numbness of her lower limbs (polyneuropathy), lymph node swelling (organomegaly), high glucose level (endocrinopathy), Bence-Jones protein-kappa in the urine (M protein) and skin with hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis and multiple glomeruloid hemangiomas (skin abno

The plasma and saliva cations in parotid malignant tumors of stages II-III were studied in 31 patients before surgical therapy and in 27 control group volunteers. The magnesium (t-Mg), calcium (t-Ca), copper (t-Cu) and zinc (t-Zn) concentrations in plasma were determined, and t-Mg and t-Ca in saliva. Our results showed that salivary and plasma t-Mg concentrations were significantly higher in patients with parotid malignant tumors in comparison to control group (saliva: 0.25 +/- 0.04 mmol/L versus 0.14 +/- 0.03/L, p < 0.01; plasma: 1.05 +/- 0.06 mmol/L versus 0.86 +/- 0.05 mmol/L, p < 0.05). OBJECTIVES: The regression of enlarged neck lymph nodes during intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) may increase actual radiation doses to the parotid glands of patients with head-and-neck cancer. We investigated the changes in the lymph nodes volume during IMRT and the effect of these changes to the parotid gland doses.
METHODS: Ten head and neck cancer patients with enlarged neck lymph nodes were enrolled in this study. Computed tomography (CT) imaging was repeated to evaluate the change in lymph nodes volume after initial 45 Gy, and the second part of IMRT (21 Gy) was then replanned to

Congenital agenesis of the parotid gland is a rare entity whose etiopathogenesis is still unclear. It is usually bilateral and is sometimes associated with other developmental anomalies of the head and neck region. A case is presented in which aplasia of the right parotid gland was associated with an omolateral angioma of the cheek. The radiological diagnostic approach and a review of the literature on agenesis of the salivary glands are presented.

RATIONALE: B cell lymphoma can co-occur with multiple myeloma (MM), and the prognosis in this case is usually poor. We propose the combination of CD19-chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells and BCMA-CAR T cells for the treatment of such patients to obtain a superior prognosis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a 50-year-old patient with previous B cell lymphoma and subsequent multiple myeloma (MM).
DIAGNOSIS: A diagnosis of B cell lymphoma and MM was made.
INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with a combination of haploidentical CD19-chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells and BCMA-CAR T cell

Lymph node metastasis from signet ring cellcarcinoma (SRCC) primary unknown is extremely rare. We here report a case of primary-unknown SRCC that metastasized to the cervical lymph nodes, co-existing with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the parotid gland as a simultaneous double cancer. A 68-year-old female patient with right swollen cervical lymph nodes consulted our medical center. A diagnosis of bilateral cervical lymph node metastasis and a right parotid tumor was made. After bilateral neck dissection and right parotidectomy, the pathological diagnosis was SRCC of primary unknown with me
