[Pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. Work-hypotheses and experimental data].

In spite of a history of more than 100 years, the pathoaetiology of multiple sclerosis is still unknown today. Research is based on three working hypotheses, i.e. on an immunopathological disease origin, on the conception that MS, as an infectious disease, is caused by a specific pathogen (slow virus infection) and on the assumption of a disturbance of basal metabolism or utilisation. The present position of the scientific foundation of the working hypotheses is presented in detail and supplemented by the results of our own investigations. Of particular interest are the geomedical studies whic

Biases in butterfly survey effort and patterns of protocol used across biogeographic regions.

Butterflies are widely recognized as effective bioindicators due to their short life cycles, close associations with specific host plants, and rapid responses to environmental change. They are comparatively easier to identify than many other insect groups, making them valuable for biodiversity monitoring. Despite this, there is no consensus or standardized guidelines on butterfly monitoring protocols in many regions of the world. This lack of standardization can compromise data quality, limit comparability across studies, lead to inefficient use of resources, and ultimately weaken our capacity

A Review of the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Patients on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Scoping Review Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: ECMO is used to deliver cardiopulmonary support in extreme failure where standard therapies are unfruitful. Although ECMO is associated with high costs and significant risks, advances in technology and clinical management have improved its safety and patient outcomes. AI/ML may provide decision support through data analysis to alert clinicians to potential safety issues, detect complications, and help inform pump/ventilator settings. The primary objective of this scoping review is to examine the applications of AI and machine learning in patients receiving various ECMO mod

Exploring conformational dynamics of the HER2 DFG-flip using machine-learning-guided metadynamics for type II inhibitor design.

Protein kinases regulate cellular proliferation and survival through tightly controlled signalling mechanisms, and their dysregulation is a major driver of cancer. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a clinically validated kinase target, yet structural and drug-discovery efforts have largely focused on type I inhibitors binding the active DFG-in conformation. The absence of experimentally resolved structures for HER2 in the inactive DFG-out state has limited structure-based development of inactive-state type II inhibitors. Here, we employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations coup

Extending the continuum: Mapping post-6-week nurse/midwife-led interventions for postnatal women - A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The postpartum period is a critical phase for both maternal and infant health. In many healthcare systems, postpartum care is limited to a single six-week visit, often leaving women with inadequate support as they undergo the physiological, psychological, and social adjustments required for motherhood. AIM: This scoping review maps the characteristics, delivery approaches, reported outcomes, and evidence gaps of nurse- and midwife-led continuity-of-care interventions that include care or follow-up beyond six weeks postpartum. METHODOLOGY: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework

Influence of Different Degrees of Food Restriction on Immune Function and Gut Microbiota in Brandt's Voles.

Small mammals in temperate areas frequently face fluctuations in food resources, and food shortage is a key factor affecting their immune function. In order to understand whether immune function and gut microbiota change under food shortage, adult male Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) were used and divided into Fed (Fed, n = 8), 80% food restriction (80% FR, n = 10) and 60% food restriction (60% FR, n = 9) groups. The experimental course lasted for 35 days. Food restriction reduced body mass (p < 0.001) but did not affect total fat mass (p = 0.532) or blood glucose levels (p = 0.777) com

Temporal analysis of respiratory virus epidemics in Victoria over winter 2024.

During winter months of temperate regions, concurrent epidemics of multiple respiratory pathogens can occur, causing periods of increased clinical burden. Case time series, which are predominantly used to monitor infection levels, can exhibit substantial noise and day-of-the-week effects, limiting the visual interpretation of trends in raw data. However, statistical methods can infer smoothed trends within case time series by quantifying and accounting for different sources of noise. Here we apply statistical models to estimate the epidemic dynamics of SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus (

Association between ambient temperature and acute type A aortic dissection in a Korean population: a 12-year dual-scale Poisson regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Whether absolute temperature or day-to-day temperature fluctuation more strongly precipitates acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) remains unresolved, particularly in East Asian populations with distinct temperate-monsoon climates. This study investigated the association between meteorological factors and ATAAD occurrence in a Korean population over a 12-year period. METHODS: Clinical data from 522 patients who underwent open surgical repair for ATAAD at a single tertiary center between January 2008 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed alongside meteorological data ob

The effect of pasture allowance and amount of concentrate offered to grazing dairy cows on milk production, dry matter intake, and grazing behavior.

The dairy industry in temperate regions of the world is predominantly pasture-based, with concentrates often fed twice daily in the parlor during milking. Intake of pasture is influenced by the amount of pasture allocated, affecting postgrazing residuals and pasture utilization. This experiment investigated the milk production, DMI, and grazing behavior of dairy cows offered different pasture allowances (PA) and different amounts of concentrate. Thirty-six Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were used in the 25-d experiment, which included two 6-d measurement periods. Three cows were randomly assigne

Cucurbitacin B mitigates Staphylococcus aureus pathogenicity and reprograms macrophage responses to restore host defense.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) remains a major health threat with limited therapeutic options. We identified cucurbitacin B (CuB), a plant-derived triterpenoid, as a concurrent, complementary adjunct that attenuates bacterial virulence while modulating host responses. Structure-guided docking together with electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) and lysate-based cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA) supported the engagement of the Staphylococcus exoprotein expression protein response regulator (SaeR) at the α4/β5 pocket, lowering SaeR-regulated toxins and immune response

Close interactions between prokaryotes and plasmids or viruses highlight a pivotal role of horizontal gene transfer in shaping antibiotic/metal(loid) resistome and their prokaryotic supercarriers in untreated hospital sewage.

Unveiling horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of antibiotic (ARGs) and metal(loid) resistance genes (MRGs) in hospital sewage is critical for surveilling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mobility that poses huge threats to public health. Using metagenomic shotgun sequencing, we provided an integrate insight into AMR characters and the relevant HGT in untreated sewage from one of the world's largest comprehensive hospitals from Oct 2022 to Aug 2023. We uncovered higher richness and diversity of ARGs or MRGs than mobile genetic elements (MGEs), while MGEs exhibited the highest abundance, suggesting gre

Energetics and Oxidative Status: Seasonal Variation in Blood Oxidative Stress Metrics in Four Species of Small Birds from a Cold Winter Climate.

Birds that overwinter in temperate regions must be physiologically flexible to face the demands of living in a thermally fluctuating environment. Much of the previous literature on this topic focuses on whole-animal metabolic rates and corresponding cellular and molecular mechanisms that enable these birds to withstand the demands of changing environmental conditions. Basal and maximal shivering metabolic rates, as well as daily energy expenditure, typically increase in winter for small birds overwintering in cold climates, which might increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) w

Elevated CO2 Increases the Canopy Temperature of Mature Quercus robur (Pedunculate Oak).

The canopy thermal response of natural forests to elevated CO2 (eCO2) is an understudied biophysical feedback in the global climate system. We investigated the effects of eCO2 (150 μmol mol-1 above ambient) on canopy temperature (Tcan) dynamics of mature (> 175 years) Quercus robur (oak) at the Birmingham Institute for Forest Research Free Air CO2 Enrichment (BIFoR-FACE) facility in Staffordshire, England, during the growing seasons of 2021, 2022 and 2023. We employed long-term, high-frequency thermal infrared (TIR) imaging to measure Tcan. Our results show that daily maximum oak Tcan under eC

Quantifying the annual atmospheric CO2 burden from biomass burning and its transport time to monitoring sites.

In the backdrop of increasing global temperatures, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from biomass burning contribute to positive climate feedback under the failure of forest regrowth, leading to a long-term loss of carbon sinks. This study assesses biomass burning CO2 contributions and transport times using the NIES-TM model (2003-2019) with GFEDv5 and GFAS emissions across 16 biomes. The Tropical & Subtropical Grasslands, Savannas and Shrublands (TSG) and Tropical & Subtropical Moist Broadleaf Forests (TSM) biomes contributed the highest, 10.74 ppm and 6.13 ppm respectively over 17 years with th

Communicating anaphylaxis risk in pediatric allergy consultations: A conversation analytic study.

UNLABELLED: Allergy in children is increasing. Reactions vary, with severe cases involving potentially fatal anaphylaxis which is treated with adrenaline. At-risk patients are prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors. However, due to limited specialist UK allergy clinics, risk discussions often take place with non-specialists (e.g., General Practitioners in primary care and general paediatricians in secondary care) who may lack confidence discussing risk and determining treatment suitability. Systematic examination of strategies for discussing risk is needed. OBJECTIVES: To identify, for the firs
