HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 53-year-old West African man presented two years after a travel to Guinea because of severe headache, neck stiffnes, fever and pruritus. The patient had been in orthopedical treatment for the last five months.
INVESTIGATIONS: Stool microscopy revealed a high number of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae. Hematology, biochemistry and all other parasitology results were normal. HIV-1/2 testing was negative and CD4+-lymphocyte count was normal. Concomitant infection by Human T Cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was confirmed by serology and PCR. The phylogeneti

Alveolar echinococcosis is a rare metacestodal infection of humans and domestic animals with Echinococcus multilocularis and predominantly a … r without wall mineralizations. Seven animals received surgical and subsequent medical therapy with albendazole (10mg/kg) and all went into clinical remission. This study reviewed for the first time imaging findings associated with alveolar echinococcosis. The disease has to be included in the list of differential diagnoses in dogs with large, cavitary liver …

To investigate the relationships between helminth infections and iron status among school-aged children, 1,115 Tanzanian children in grades 2 through 5 were randomly assigned to treatment or control groups. The children in the treatment group were screened for infection with Schistosoma haematobium and hookworm at baseline, 3 months, and 15 months; infected children were given albendazole against hookworm and praziquantel against schistosomiasis. The control group received a placebo and did not undergo parasitological screening until 15 months after the baseline. Hematological variables were c…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of seizure recurrence after a first seizure due to neurocysticercosis (NC) and to evaluate risk factors for seizure recurrence, including the influence of antihelminthic treatment.
METHODS: The authors prospectively followed 77 patients with a first seizure and active or transitional NC for >7 years (median 24 months).
RESULTS: Thirty-one patients (40.3%) experienced seizure recurrence. Kaplan-Meier estimated recurrence was 22% at 6 months, 32% at 12 months, 39% at 24 months, and 49% at 48 and 84 months. Treatment with an antihelminthic (albendazole) did not …

To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound (US) guided percutaneous sclerotherapy in the pediatric population, 14 hydatid liver cysts (HLC) in eight male patients whose ages ranged between 6 and 16 years (mean 9.9 years) were treated. The maximum diameter was 110 mm. Albendazole was administered orally to all patients for 1 week before percutaneous treatment and for 3-6 months after the procedure to prevent dissemination of the disease. Cyst puncture was performed with 20 G Chiba needles using US guidance. More than one-half of the estimated cyst volume was aspirated, then 20% hypertonic saline (7…

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Primary hydatid cysts of the spinal canal are very rare. The patient in the present case presented with lower caud … approach was used by decompressing thinned posterior elements. Adjuvant therapy with mebendazole or albendazole was not administered, although recently, some authors claim good results with integrated surgical and medical treatment.

Hydatid disease, caused by various Echinococcus species, is endemic in developing countries and most commonly affects the liver and lungs. A … ura. Histopathology confirmed a hydatid cyst. The patient recovered well and was discharged on oral Albendazole. This case emphasizes the rarity of primary pleural hydatid cysts, the diagnostic challenges they pose, and the importance of considering parasitic infections in pleural effusions for timely surgical and medical management.
