Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a disease with a predilection for young obese women. The most common symptoms are headache, transient visual obscuration and pulsatile tinnitus. The only focal neurologic finding is false-localizing 6th cranial nerve palsy. Papilledema is usually present and this can lead to optic atrophy with progressive permanent visual loss. The earliest visual loss is constriction of peripheral visual field, usually starting with the inferior nasal quadrant. The diagnostic value of transcranial ultrasound for intracranial lesions in children with headaches was evaluated. From January 1995 to December 1998, 444 children with headaches for more than 2 weeks visited our Pediatric Neurologic and Neurosurgical Outpatient Clinics. The effects of methylmercury chloride (MMC) on the degenerative changes in rat brain and cranial nerves were studied. Twelve Wistar rats were divided into two equal groups. The causes of congenital hydrocephalus vary widely and have an important effect in determining the future counseling of affected cases. We analyzed the postmortem findings of 49 autopsies diagnosed as hydrocephalus to find the causes and related conditions. The cases were collected during the last 10 years (1981-1990).
