Differentiation of oka varicella vaccine strain from wild varicella-zoster virus strains isolated from vaccinees and household contact.

The Oka varicella vaccine strain can be differentiated from wild-type strains by its unique restriction endonuclease fingerprinting (REFP: HpaI-K and EcoRI-P) pattern of the gpV-coding region of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) genome. VZV-DNAs from patients with complicated clinical courses related to vaccination were examined to determine whether they were vaccine-derived or wild-type. A virus was isolated from a one year-old boy with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) who developed typical varicella 28 days after vaccination (case A). Another virus was isolated from a four-year-old boy withou

Herpes simplex virus type 1 infection of endothelial, epithelial, and fibroblast cells induces a receptor for C3b.

We recently demonstrated that herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV 1) induces a receptor on human umbilical vein endothelial cells for complement component C3b (C3bR). We assigned this receptor function to HSV 1 viral glycoprotein C (gC) based on several observations: tunicamycin, which prevents glycosylation and expression of N-linked glycoproteins on the surface of infected cells, markedly reduced expression of the C3bR; monoclonal antibodies to HSV 1 gC blocked detection of the C3bR, whereas monoclonal antibodies to other HSV 1 glycoproteins (gB, gD, gE) had no effect; and the MP mutant of HSV

Clinical studies on the effectiveness of Wratizolin in the treatment of some dermatoses.

Clinical studies on therapeutic effectiveness of ITCL applied as 2-3% ointment, 2% cream and 2-3% lotion were carried out. The study material included 96 patients at the age of 9-80. Of this group, 19 patients were with herpes zoster, 16 with herpes simplex, 29 with eczema complicated by secondary bacterial infection, 30 with palm and foot pustulosis, 1 patient with actinic cheilitis and 1 with varicella. The results obtained have revealed that the preparation is particularly effective in the treatment of dermatoses induced by herpes zoster and herpes simplex virus.

Live attenuated varicella vaccine: the KMcC strain in healthy children.

The KMcC strain of live, attenuated varicella-zoster virus vaccine was studied in healthy children as a preliminary step toward varicella vaccine studies with this strain in children with leukemia. Forty-three children were immunized: 26 with the 40th passage vaccine and 17 with the 50th passage. Studies included surveillance for clinical reactivity, oropharyngeal excretion of vaccine virus, viruria, and viremia. Antibody responses were assayed by fluorescent antibody to membrane antigens and immune adherence hemagglutination. Cell-mediated immune responses were assayed by lymphocyte prolifera

Overview and horizons in prevention of some human infectious diseases by vaccination.

The present measles problem in the United States, an estimated 918,500 cases in 1977, is attributed to the failure of the 14-year vaccination program to immunize enough children to prevent continued circulation of the virus and recurrent outbreaks. A new strategy for rapidly overcoming this problem is recommended. There appears to be no current congenital rubella syndrome problem against which the rubella vaccination program in the United States is directed. However, the continued annual infection of an estimated two million children conceivably could again bring fourth a rubella virus with a

Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis with partial lipodystrophy: discordant occurrence in identical twins.

The course of disease of a patient with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis and partial lipodystrophy is described. The case is further characterized by a deficiency of C3 and C3- activator, by normal values of C4, by evidence of the nephritogenic factor, by raised fibrin degradation products and by an unselective proteinuria. The course of the glomerulonephritis runs parallel to a pronounced susceptibility to infection (at first varicella, tonsillitis and measles, later pneumonia, meningitis, encephalitis and hepatitis). On account of a nephrotic syndrome and an initative impairment of t

Preventative Care in the Patient with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: What Is New?

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) do not receive routine preventative care at the same rate as general medical patients. This patient population is at increased risk of vaccine preventable illness such as influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia. This review will discuss health maintenance needs and preventative care issues in patients with IBD.

Associations Between Routine Vaccinations and the Risk of New-Onset Idiopathic Uveitis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between vaccination and the risk of new-onset idiopathic uveitis (NIU). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of aggregated electronic health records from multiple health systems across the United States. SUBJECTS: Subjects who received the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), human papillomavirus (HPV), varicella, recombinant herpes zoster, or live herpes zoster vaccinations from 2006 to 2025 and propensity-score matched controls. INTERVENTION: Vaccines against COVID-19, HPV, varicella, recombinant herpes zoster, or live herpes zoster. MAIN OUTCOMES AND

Post-COVID-19 pandemic inequities in routine childhood immunization in Canada: racial disparities in uptake of polio, meningococcal conjugate, and varicella vaccines.

BACKGROUND: Decline in routine childhood vaccination coverage in Canada has accelerated following the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing risks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Yet, little is known about how this affects different racial groups. This study examines racial disparities in uptake of childhood polio, meningococcal, and varicella vaccines, and the roles of health literacy and conspiracy beliefs. METHODS: We conducted a national survey that included 2,528 Canadian parents of children aged 0-12 years. Parents reported their child's vaccination status and completed measures of health liter

MMRV vaccine safety: A comprehensive analysis of adverse events recorded among pediatric populations.

Measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccines are widely used in global immunization programs, but safety data on their administration in children remain limited. We analyzed adverse events following immunization(AEFIs) associated with the MMRV vaccine in children under seven y of age, as reported to the US Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) from 2005 to 2025. Disproportionality analyses were applied, with multiple testing correction using a 5% false discovery rate. Subgroup assessments focused on children with asthma, epilepsy, and chronic kidney disease. The results show

Hepatitis B Birth Dose Effects on Childhood Immunization in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends administering the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine at birth, making it the first vaccine that many children receive. However, few studies examine whether children who miss the birth dose are at increased risk of vaccination delay. This study investigates birth dose as a determinant of up-to-date immunization status at age 18 months, considering 7 core childhood vaccine series: diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis; polio; measles, mumps, and rubella; Haemophilus influenzae type B; varicella; hepatitis B; and pneu

An adult co-presented with varicella and herpes zoster caused by varicella zoster virus genotype J, China: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes varicella primarily in childhood, and some rare adults also report varicella. Herpes zoster mainly occurs in adults by endogenous reactivation of latent VZV. Until now, varicella and herpes zoster have seldom been reported simultaneously in one patient. Here, we report a rare case co-presenting with varicella and herpes zoster in a Chinese adult. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old Chinese man suffered papules and vesicles with pain on the left ear. Five days after onset, he was admitted to the Department of Dermatology of The Third Hospital of Xia

A Decade of Varicella Screening Within a Paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Population.

INTRODUCTION: Increased risk of opportunistic infection-e.g., varicella zoster infection-secondary to therapies is a cause of morbidity in inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] patients. The UK vaccination schedule does not include varicella immunisation. We aimed to evaluate the varicella screening and immunisation programme in a paediatric IBD population. METHODS: Data regarding IBD diagnosis, varicella status, and consequent immunisations/treatment interventions were collected retrospectively from the records of patients diagnosed with IBD over a 10-year period [2009-2018]. RESULTS: In all, 52
