The role of cytology and HPV typing as a screening tool in patients with intraanal warts.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Given that anorectal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been related to anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) and rectal cancer, we conducted this study to evaluate the role of cytology of anal smears in the diagnosis of intraanal disease and related AIN and to correlate it to HPV genotypes. METHOD: A total of 72 patients (58 males and 14 females) with perianal warts underwent anoscopy with biopsies and anal cytologic examination. Cytology was carried out for the identification of any dysplasia according to the Bethesda system. All specimens were examined with polymer

[Topical imiquimod for the treatment of anogenital warts in an infant].

BACKGROUND: Treatment of anogenital warts (AW) in children and infants is painful because of the destructive techniques involved, as a result of which general anaesthesia may be required. For adults, topical imiquimod is an efficient and well-tolerated product used for these lesions. Here, we report a case demonstrating the benefits of topical imiquimod in the treatment of AW in infant. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A ten-month-old infant was presenting large AW in the inguinal and perianal folds for a period of two months, which persisted despite one month of treatment with podophyllotoxin. After a

Obstetrician-gynecologists and the HPV vaccine: practice patterns, beliefs, and knowledge.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, can be contracted by young girls shortly after sexual debut. Human papillomavirus can lead to cervical and anogenital cancers and genital warts. A vaccine has been developed to protect against precancerous lesions. We examined obstetrician-gynecologists' practices, opinions, and knowledge regarding this vaccine. DESIGN: A 37-item questionnaire was sent out by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to its fellows and junior fellows between May and November o

Risk factors for anogenital human papillomavirus infection in men.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is strongly associated with cervical and other anogenital cancers. Identification of risk factors for HPV infection in men may improve our understanding of HPV transmission and prevention. METHODS: HPV testing for 37 types was conducted in 463 men 18-40 years old recruited from 2 US cities. The entire anogenital region and semen were sampled. A self-administered questionnaire was completed. Multivariate logistic regression aided the identification of independent risk factors for any HPV type, oncogenic HPV types, and nononcogenic HPV types. RESULTS: Pre

Anal condyloma: a comparison between HIV positive and negative patients.

HIV positive and negative patients with anal condylomata were compared to determine an association with squamous cell neoplasia, its disease progression, and response to treatment. From 1992 to 2003, 61 patients were diagnosed with anal condylomata by anal biopsy. Thirty-four patients were HIV+ and 27 patients were considered HIV-. Upon retrospective chart review, details on disease progression, development of malignancy, and subsequent treatment were collected. Sixty-one per cent of HIV+ patients had a neoplastic process in contrast to 25 per cent of HIV- patients (P = 0.005). Five patients d

Topical use of cidofovir induced acute renal failure.

BACKGROUND: Cidofovir has antiviral activity against a wide spectrum of DNA viruses. Several small studies have focused on the efficacy of topical cidofovir in various viral-induced diseases. We report a systemic complication of such therapy. CASE REPORT: A bone marrow transplant recipient with chronic renal failure developed genital condylomas resistant to standard therapy. After topical cidofovir application (1% once daily for 5 days, then 4% for 12 days), the lesions improved while local erosions appeared. Acute renal failure with features of tubular acidosis occurred at day 19. Spontaneou
