Differentiation in bacterial symbiont growth between insecticide treated and untreated tropical bed bug.

Symbiotic bacteria are closely associated with insect adaptability and survival, particularly in species with nutritionally limited diets. In the tropical bed bug Cimex hemipterus, these microbial partners synthesize essential nutrients such as B vitamins and amino acids that are absent from blood meals. The global resurgence of bed bug infestations, fueled by increased international travel and insecticide resistance, has challenged conventional control methods. Microbial symbionts are increasingly suspected to contribute to resistance mechanisms, but their role remains poorly defined. This st

Molecular Mechanism of Aflatoxin B1 Synthesis Related AfVerB Regulating the Development, AFB1 Biosyntheis and Virulence of Aspergillus flavus Mainly Through Its CYP Domain.

Aspergillus flavus and its secondary metabolites aflatoxins pose a significant threat to the health of humans, animals, and plants. Therefore, there is an urgent need to control A. flavus contamination. AfverB plays a key role in the aflatoxin gene cluster; however, its function and mechanism in fungal development and virulence remain poorly understood. In this study, we constructed afVerB gene deletion mutants (∆afVerB-1 and ∆afVerB-2) and two CYP domain mutants (afVerB∆D1 and afVerB∆D2) through homologous recombination. Phenotype analysis revealed that, via its two CYP domains, AfVerB is dee

Detection of a New Recombinant Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus 2 in China and Development of Virus-like Particle-Based Vaccine.

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is a very virulent virus of the genus Lagovirus causing severe and fatal hepatitis in the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). RHDV has two distinct genotypes: GI.1 (RHDV) and GI.2 (RHDV2). The first RHDV2/GI.2 strain was identified as a recombinant virus between a non-pathogenic (GI.3P) and a pathogenic (GI.2) lagovirus, and the recombination is thought to have been a key mechanism in the emergence and evolution of RHDV2. Here, a new variant of RHDV2 was identified affecting domestic rabbits on Chinese farms, with a mortality rate of 70-80%. Phyloge

Human adenovirus penton dodecahedron nanoparticles induce an enhanced neutralizing antibody response in mouse model.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infectious diseases and control outbreaks, and nanoparticles are highly suitable platforms for protein-based vaccines. Human adenovirus type 7 (Ad7) is one of the main pathogens causing severe pneumonia. A safe and effective vaccine against Ad7 infection is urgently needed. Penton-dodecahedron (Pt-Dd) nanoparticles, can be generated by the spontaneous assembly of the penton during the replication cycle of human adenovirus type 3. Adenovirus type 3 Pt-Dd has been studied as drug delivery vehicles. However, little attention has been paid to whethe

West Nile Virus and Other Nationally Notifiable Arboviral Diseases - United States, 2023.

In the United States, arthropodborne viruses (arboviruses) are primarily transmitted by infected mosquitoes or ticks. Most infections are asymptomatic; symptomatic infections range from mild febrile illness to severe neuroinvasive disease. This report summarizes 2023 data for nationally notifiable domestic arboviral diseases. Forty-eight states and the District of Columbia reported 2,770 human arboviral disease cases, including 2,022 (73%) hospitalizations and 208 (8%) deaths. As in previous years, West Nile virus (WNV) was the most commonly reported domestic arboviral disease in 2023, account

Larval development of a parasitoid depends on host ecdysteroids.

Parasitoids often exhibit high flexibility in their development depending on stages of their host at the parasitism, yet little is known about the mechanism underlying such flexibility. In the study, we evaluated the larval development time of the parasitoid Exorista sorbillans (Diptera: Tachinidae) on the lepidopteran model insect Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae). We found that the development duration of E. sorbillans larvae parasitizing on the late-developmental silkworms was significantly shorter than that of the larvae parasitizing on the early-developmental hosts. Intriguingly, the

Evaluation of some photosensitizers against the cotton leaf worm, Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), in relation to spectral and thermal reflectance.

Photosensitizing compounds are eco-friendly promising organic dyes for managing insect pests without facing the risk of resistance. The photodynamic efficacy of four Photosensitizing compounds (rose Bengal, rhodamine B, methylene blue and methyl violet) was monitored against the third larval instar of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval), after exposure to sunlight. The LC50 values of the four compounds; rose Bengal, rhodamine B, methylene blue and methyl violet recorded 0.029 × 10-5, 0.24 × 10-5, 14.69 × 10-5 and 15.59 × 10-5 M, respectively. Therefore, rose Bengal was the most effective compoun

Cross-resistance, inheritance and biochemical mechanism of abamectin resistance in a field-derived strain of the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (Acari: Tetranychidae).

BACKGROUND: The citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor), a global pest of citrus, has developed different levels of resistance to various acaricides in the field. Abamectin is one of the most important insecticides/acaricides worldwide, targetting a wide number of insect and mite pests. The evolution of abamectin resistance in P. citri is threatening the sustainable use of abamectin for mite control. RESULTS: The abamectin resistant strain (NN-Aba), derived from a field strain NN by consistent selection with abamectin, showed 4279-fold resistance to abamectin compared to a relatively sus

Bionomic responses of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) to lethal and sublethal concentrations of selected insecticides.

Since 2016, the invasive insect Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) from the Americas has made maize production unattainable without pesticides in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. To counteract this pest, farmers often resort to the use hazardous pesticides. This study aimed to investigate botanicals, microbials, and semi-synthetic insecticides in Ghana for pest control without harming local ecosystems. Under laboratory and on-station conditions, the present study evaluated the acute and sublethal responses of S. frugiperda to: (i) Pieris rapae Granulovirus (PrGV)

Insulin signaling couples growth and early maturation to cholesterol intake in Drosophila.

Nutrition is one of the most important influences on growth and the timing of maturational transitions including mammalian puberty and insect metamorphosis. Childhood obesity is associated with precocious puberty, but the assessment mechanism that links body fat to early maturation is unknown. During development, the intake of nutrients promotes signaling through insulin-like systems that govern the growth of cells and tissues and also regulates the timely production of the steroid hormones that initiate the juvenile-adult transition. We show here that the dietary lipid cholesterol, which is r

First report of Przhevalskiana silenus derived recombinant hypodermin C based indirect ELISA for serodiagnosis of goat warble fly myiasis.

Goat warble fly infestation (GWFI) is a subcutaneous myiasis caused by larvae of Przhevalskiana silenus, an insect belonging to the order Diptera. The diagnosis of GWFI is challenging in the early larval instars (L1 and L2) as they are occult under the skin and hair coat causing prolonged economic loss in form of meat and hide damage. This necessitates early diagnosis for disease control at herd level and its prophylactic management to prevent economic losses. Hypodermins, a class of serine proteases from Hypoderminae subfamily have been used as serodiagnostic antigens for the past four decade

Predicting the habitat suitability of Schistosoma intermediate host Bulinus truncatus, its predatory aquatic insect Odonata nymph, and the associated aquatic plant Ceratophyllum demersum using MaxEnt.

Schistosomiasis is one of the most important parasitic diseases in tropical and subtropical areas. Its prevalence is associated with the distribution of freshwater snails, which are their intermediate hosts. Thus, control of freshwater snails is the solution to reduce the transmission of this disease. This will be achieved by understanding the relationship between the snails and their habitats including natural enemies and associated aquatic plants as well as the factors affecting their distribution. In this study, Maximum Entropy model (MaxEnt) was used for mapping and predicting the possible

A highly expressed odorant receptor from the yellow fever mosquito, AaegOR11, responds to (+)- and (-)-fenchone and a phenolic repellent.

The cornerstone of the reverse chemical ecology approach is the identification of odorant receptors (OR) sensitive to compounds in a large panel of odorants. In this approach, we de-orphanize ORs and, subsequently, measure behaviors elicited by these semiochemicals. After that, we evaluate behaviorally active compounds for applications in insect vector management. Intriguingly, multiple ORs encoded by genes highly expressed in mosquito antennae do not respond to any test odorant. One such case is CquiOR125 from the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus Say. To better understand CquiO

Plant-derived VLP: a worthy platform to produce vaccine against SARS-CoV-2.

After its emergence in late 2019 SARS-CoV-2 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on 11 March 2020 and has claimed more than 2.8 million lives. There has been a massive global effort to develop vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and the rapid and low cost production of large quantities of vaccine is urgently needed to ensure adequate supply to both developed and developing countries. Virus-like particles (VLPs) are composed of viral antigens that self-assemble into structures that mimic the structure of native viruses but lack the viral genome. Thus they are not only a safer altern

Antifungal activity of different Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus species against various fungal phytopathogens and identification of the antifungal compounds from X. szentirmaii.

Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus spp. are enteric bacterial symbionts of Steinernema and Heterorhabditis nematodes, respectively. These bacteria produce an extensive set of natural products (NPs) with antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal, insecticidal, or other bioactivities when vectored into insect hemocoel by nematodes. We assessed the in vitro activity of different Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus cell-free supernatants against important fungal phytopathogens, viz., Cryphonectria parasitica, Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizoctonia solani, and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and identified the bioactive antif

Impact of natural products on discovery of, and innovation in, crop protection compounds.

Natural products (NPs) have long been an important source of, and inspiration for, developing novel compounds to control weeds, pathogens and insect pests. In this review, we use a dataset of 800 historic, current and emerging crop protection compounds to explore the influence of NPs on the introduction of new crop protection compounds (fungicides, herbicides, insecticides) as a function of time. NPs, their semisynthetic derivatives (NPDs) and compounds inspired by NPs (NP mimics, NPMs) account for 17% of all crop protection compounds. NPs, NPDs, and NPMs have been a fairly constant source of

Carnauba wax enhances the insecticidal activity of entomopathogenic fungi against the blowfly Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Blowfly, Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is a problematic synanthropic insect pest, a vector of microbial pathogens, and the causal agent of secondary myiasis. Fungal biopesticides are considered eco-friendly tools, alternative to synthetic pesticides, for the control of arthropod pests; however, to date, little is known about their bioactivity against blowflies. In this study, we assessed the insecticidal activity of three well-known entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria pseudobassiana and Akanthomyces muscarius against L. sericata. In addition, we tested powdered c

Characterization of Antibiosis to Diabrotica speciosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Brazilian Maize Landraces.

Resistance to insect pests can be found in several native, landrace plants and can be an important alternative to conventional control methods. Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) larvae are important maize (Zea mays L.) (Cyperales: Poaceae) root pests and finding native resistance in landraces would greatly contribute to maize-breeding programs aimed at controlling this pest. This study investigated whether the growth, survival, oviposition rhythm, fecundity, and fertility of D. speciosa are negatively influenced by specific maize landraces, and the existence of any morph
