TOMM40 rs2075650 may represent a new candidate gene for vulnerability to major depressive disorder.

Evidence suggests that depression is a risk factor for dementia; however, the relationship between the two conditions is not fully understood. A novel gene (TOMM40) has been consistently associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), but has received no attention in depression. We conducted a three-level cross-sectional study to investigate the association of the TOMM40 rs2075650 SNP with depression. We recruited a community sample of 1220 participants (571 controls, 649 lifetime depression) to complete a psychiatric background questionnaire, the Brief Symptom Inventory, and Big Five Inventory at L

Error-related negativity and tic history in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The error-related negativity (ERN) is a negative deflection in the event-related potential after an incorrect response, which is often increased in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the relation of the ERN to comorbid tic disorders has not been examined in patients with OCD. This study compared ERN amplitudes in patients with tic-related OCD, patients with non-tic-related OCD, and healthy controls. METHOD: The ERN, correct response negativity, and error number were measured during an Eriksen flanker task to assess performance monitoring in 44 youth with a

Altered neural response of the appetitive emotional system in cocaine addiction: an fMRI Study.

Research on addiction suggests that emotional alterations play an essential role in the development, maintenance, relapse and treatment outcome of substance abuse disorders. Although many neuroimaging studies focussed on the neural response to conditioned stimuli, much less is known about the neural response to natural affective stimuli in this pathological population. Previous research has demonstrated an altered emotional experience and autonomic response to emotional stimuli using the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) in drug abusers. Here we aimed, using functional magnetic res

Variability in post-error behavioral adjustment is associated with functional abnormalities in the temporal cortex in children with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Error processing is reflected, behaviorally, by slower reaction times (RT) on trials immediately following an error (post-error). Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) fail to show RT slowing and demonstrate increased intra-subject variability (ISV) on post-error trials. The neural correlates of these behavioral deficits remain unclear. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) are key regions implicated in error processing and subsequent behavioral adjustment. We hypothesized that children with ADHD, compared to typicall

Amygdala hypersensitivity in response to emotional faces in Tourette's patients.

OBJECTIVES: Tourette's syndrome is characterised by motor and vocal tics as well as a high level of impulsivity and emotional dysregulation. Neuroimaging studies point to structural changes of the basal ganglia, prefrontal cortex and parts of the limbic system. However, there is no link between behavioural symptoms and the structural changes in the amygdala. One aspect of daily social interaction is the perception of emotional facial expressions, closely linked to amgydala function. METHODS: We therefore investigated via fMRI the implicit discrimination of six emotional facial expressions in

Distinct effects of {delta}9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol on neural activation during emotional processing.

CONTEXT: Cannabis use can both increase and reduce anxiety in humans. The neurophysiological substrates of these effects are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of 2 main psychoactive constituents of Cannabis sativa (Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol [Delta9-THC] and cannabidiol [CBD]) on regional brain function during emotional processing. DESIGN: Subjects were studied on 3 separate occasions using an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm while viewing faces that implicitly elicited different levels of anxiety. Each scanning session was preceded by the ingestion

Atypical involvement of frontostriatal systems during sensorimotor control in autism.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder involving dysmaturation of widely distributed brain systems. Accordingly, behaviors that depend on distributed systems, such as higher level cognition and sensorimotor control, are compromised in the disorder. The current study investigated alterations in neural systems underlying sensorimotor disturbances in autism. An fMRI investigation was conducted using saccadic and pursuit eye movement paradigms with 13 high functioning individuals with autism and 14 age- and IQ-matched typically developing individuals. Individuals with autism had reduced activatio

Bisretinoids as a Source of Early Photoreceptor Pathology in Stargardt Disease.

BACKGROUND: Stargardt disease (STGD1) due to biallelic mutations in the ABCA4 gene is the most frequent single-gene retinal disease with a genetic prevalence of about 1 in 7,000. Pathology in STGD1 is due to dysfunction of a retina-specific vitamin A transporter which causes accumulation of cytotoxic vitamin A byproducts known as bisretinoids. Bisretinoids produce a distinct autofluorescent emission within affected cells that is seen to precede atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), photoreceptor cell death, and vision loss. This sequence of pathogenesis, and the fact that formation

Schlieren imaging and video classification of alphabet pronunciations: exploiting phonetic flows for speech recognition and speech therapy.

Speech is a highly coordinated process that requires precise control over vocal tract morphology/motion to produce intelligible sounds while simultaneously generating unique exhaled flow patterns. The schlieren imaging technique visualizes airflows with subtle density variations. It is hypothesized that speech flows captured by schlieren, when analyzed using a hybrid of convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network, can recognize alphabet pronunciations, thus facilitating automatic speech recognition and speech disorder therapy. This study evaluates the feasibili

Hypertensive Emergency Presenting With Isolated Cranial Nerve III Palsy and Subsequent Intracranial Hemorrhage.

Hypertensive emergencies present as a life-threatening condition characterized by severely elevated blood pressure with evidence of acute end-organ damage. The most common neurological presentations include ischemic stroke, encephalopathy, and intracranial hemorrhage; however, isolated cranial nerve palsies are a rare occurrence. We present a case of a 72-year-old female with a history of chronic hypertension who presented to the emergency department at Chino Valley Medical Center with a one-week history of malaise, headache, hypertension, and right eye pain. She subsequently developed a right

Using rare genetic mutations to revisit structural brain asymmetry.

Asymmetry between the left and right brain is a key feature of brain organization. Hemispheric functional specialization underlies some of the most advanced human-defining cognitive operations, such as articulated language, perspective taking, or rapid detection of facial cues. Yet, genetic investigations into brain asymmetry have mostly relied on common variant studies, which typically exert small effects on brain phenotypes. Here, we leverage rare genomic deletions and duplications to study how genetic alterations reverberate in human brain and behavior. We quantitatively dissected the impac

Image Processing for mHealth-Based Approach to Detect the Local Tissue Inflammation in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: A Proof of Concept Study.

Skin lesions are a feature of many diseases including cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Ulcerative lesions are a common manifestation of CL. Response to treatment in such lesions is judged through the assessment of the healing process by regular clinical observations, which remains a challenge for the clinician, health system, and the patient in leishmaniasis endemic countries. In this study, image processing was initially done using 40 CL lesion color images that were captured using a mobile phone camera, to establish a technique to extract features from the image which could be related to the cl

Fluorescence distinguishing of SO2 derivatives and Cys/GSH from multi-channel signal patterns and visual sensing based on smartphone in living cells and environment.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2), cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH), which perform crucial actions in regulating the balance of human, are closely related reactive sulfur species (RSS). Moreover, SO2 is one of the most concerned air pollutants, which is easily soluble in water and forms its derivatives. Therefore, it is highly desirable to differentiate SO2 derivatives and Cys/GSH in living cells and environment. Herein, a new near-infrared (NIR) mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe, NIR-CG, which could distinguish SO2 derivatives and Cys/GSH by using multiple sets of signal patterns under single ex
