Intense Pulsed Light Annealing Process of Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide Semiconductors via Flash White Light Combined with Deep-UV and Near-Infrared Drying for High-Performance Thin-Film Transistors.

In this study, an intense pulsed light (IPL) process for annealing an indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (IGZO) semiconductor was conducted via flash white light combined with near-infrared (NIR) and deep-ultraviolet (DUV) drying to form a thin-film transistor (TFT). The IGZO thin-film semiconductor was fabricated using a solution-based process on a doped-silicon wafer covered with silicon dioxide. In order to optimize the IPL irradiation condition for the annealing process, the flash white light irradiation energy was varied from 70 to 130 J/cm2. Drying by NIR and DUV irradiation was employed and opti

PEGylated (NH4)xWO3 nanorod mediated rapid photonecrosis of breast cancer cells.

Photothermal therapy has emerged as a potential minimally invasive technique to destroy malignant cells with high selectivity. It utilizes low band gap nanoscale materials as photothermal agents dispersed at the affected area to increase the temperature locally by absorbing radiation in the near infrared (NIR) region and destroys the cells. In an effort to develop a photothermal agent with high efficacy for photothermal therapy, we found that (NH4)xWO3 nanorods of length 0.5-1.0 μm and diameter ∼100 nm could destroy breast cancer cells rapidly when irradiated with a wavelength in the therapeut

Laser safety in fiber-optic monitoring of spinal cord hemodynamics: a preclinical evaluation.

The prevention and treatment of spinal cord injury are focused upon the maintenance of spinal cord blood flow, yet no technology exists to monitor spinal cord ischemia. We recently demonstrated continuous monitoring of spinal cord ischemia with diffuse correlation and optical spectroscopies using an optical probe. Prior to clinical translation of this technology, it is critically important to demonstrate the safety profile of spinal cord exposure to the required light. To our knowledge, this is the first report of in situ safety testing of such a monitor. We expose the spinal cord to laser lig

A prospective observational study of the change in regional cerebral oxygen saturation during cesarean delivery in women receiving phenylephrine prophylaxis for spinal hypotension.

BACKGROUND: Spinal hypotension causes decreased regional cerebral oxygen saturation (ScO2) in women undergoing cesarean delivery. In this study we aimed to measure the change in ScO2 using near infrared spectroscopy in women receiving a prophylactic phenylephrine infusion during cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational cohort study. Fifty-three women had ScO2 measurements at the following time points: preoperatively, in the supine position with 30° of left lateral tilt; one and five minutes after spinal anesthesia; at the time of skin incision;

Hemodynamic Response Alterations in Sensorimotor Areas as a Function of Barbell Load Levels during Squatting: An fNIRS Study.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) serves as a promising tool to examine hemodynamic response alterations in a sports-scientific context. The present study aimed to investigate how brain activity within the human motor system changes its processing in dependency of different barbell load conditions while executing a barbell squat (BS). Additionally, we used different fNIRS probe configurations to identify and subsequently eliminate potential exercise induced systemic confounders such as increases in extracerebral blood flow. Ten healthy, male participants were enrolled in a crossove

Cerebral Tissue Oxygenation during Immediate Neonatal Transition and Resuscitation.

This article provides a review of cerebral tissue oxygenation during immediate transition after birth in human neonates. Recommended routine monitoring, especially if resuscitation is needed, during this period includes arterial oxygen saturation and heart rate measured by pulse oximetry and electrocardiogram. However, there is increasing interest to monitor in addition with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) the oxygenation of the brain. There is a different pattern of increase between cerebral tissue oxygenation and arterial oxygen saturation during the immediate transition, with cerebral tis

Vibration-related extrusion of capillary blood from the calf musculature depends upon directions of vibration of the leg and of the gravity vector.

PURPOSE: In this study, we investigated the effects of vibration of the whole lower leg on the content and the oxygenation of hemoglobin in the unloaded relaxed lateral gastrocnemius muscle. Vibration was applied orthogonal to and in parallel with leg axis to examine whether the extrusion of blood depends on an alignment of main vessel direction, axis of vibration and gravity. METHOD: The blood volume in the muscles was altered by horizontal and 30° upright body posture. Fifteen male subjects were exposed to 4 sets of experiments with both vibration directions and both tilt angles applied in

Association between impaired brain activity and volume at the sub-region of Broca's area in ultra-high risk and first-episode schizophrenia: A multi-modal neuroimaging study.

Recent studies have suggested that functional abnormalities in Broca's area, which is important in language production (speech and thoughts before speech), play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. While multi-modal approaches have proved useful in revealing the specific pathophysiology of psychosis, the association of functional abnormalities with gray matter volume (GMV) here in subjects with an ultra-high risk (UHR) of schizophrenia, those with first-episode schizophrenia (FES), and healthy controls has yet to be clarified. Therefore, the relationship between cortical

Preoperative prediction of cerebral hyperperfusion after carotid endarterectomy using middle cerebral artery signal intensity in 1.5-tesla magnetic resonance angiography followed by cerebrovascular reactivity to acetazolamide using brain perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the signal intensity of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) on preoperative 1.5-T magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) could identify patients at risk for hyperperfusion following carotid endarterectomy (CEA) as a clinical screening test and whether an additional measurement of preoperative cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) to acetazolamide on brain perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) could increase the predictive accuracy for the development of hyperperfusion. METHODS: In 301 patients, the signal intens

The fluoro-less and contrast-less peripheral endovascular intervention: Halfway there.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous endovascular revascularization requires the use of fluoroscopic guidance and radiopaque contrast. We present a successful intervention without the use of iodinated contrast. CASE: A 92-year-old man with dry gangrene involving the second and fourth left toes had acute on chronic kidney injury. Arterial duplex showed severe stenosis in bilateral superficial femoral arteries (SFAs). Fluoroscopic and ultrasound guidance and intravascular imaging were used to avoid iodinated contrast. After right to left femoral crossover, the entire left SFA was imaged with ultrasound.

Imaging assessments of lower urinary tract dysfunctions: Future steps.

Urodynamic tests are the standard diagnostic method for lower urinary tract dysfunctions (LUTD). However, these tests are invasive. The current review describes the noninvasive imaging techniques that have been used to monitor LUTD. The main imaging technologies that have been applied in diagnosing LUTD were 2D ultrasonography, Doppler ultrasonography, and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Ultrasonographic parameters, such as bladder wall thickness (BWT), detrusor wall thickness (DWT), and ultrasound-estimated bladder weight (UEBW), have been proposed as surrogates for bladder outlet obstruct

Cerebral and somatic oxygen saturations after repair of tetralogy of Fallot: effects of extubation on regional blood flow.

BACKGROUND: After repair of tetralogy of Fallot, some patients experience a low cardiac output state owing to right ventricular diastolic failure. Negative-pressure ventilation has been shown to improve cardiac output in these patients. What has not been evaluated is the effect of extubation and loading of the respiratory muscles on the distribution of cardiac output after repair of tetralogy of Fallot. METHODS: In 23 consecutive patients undergoing repair of tetralogy of Fallot, standard hemodynamic variables, central venous oxygen saturations, and near infrared spectroscopy of the brain, me

Degradation process of lead chromate in paintings by Vincent van Gogh studied by means of spectromicroscopic methods. 4. Artificial aging of model samples of co-precipitates of lead chromate and lead sulfate.

Previous investigations about the darkening of chrome yellow pigments revealed that this form of alteration is attributable to a reduction of the original Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and that the presence of sulfur-containing compounds, most often sulfates, plays a key role during this process. We recently demonstrated that different crystal forms of chrome yellow pigments (PbCrO(4) and PbCr(1-x)S(x)O(4)) are present in paintings by Vincent van Gogh. In the present work, we show how both the chemical composition and the crystalline structure of lead chromate-based pigments influence their stability. Fo

Cerebral autoregulation in the first day after preterm birth: no evidence of association with systemic inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Both systemic inflammation and impaired cerebral autoregulation (CA) have been associated with brain injury in preterm infants. We hypothesized that impaired CA represents a hemodynamic link between inflammation and brain injury. RESULTS: Neither fetal vasculitis nor interleukin-6 (IL-6) affected CA significantly. A high level of IL-6 was associated with hypotension (P = 0.03) irrespective of dopamine therapy. The magnitude of impairment in CA increased with decreasing mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) (P = 0.02). No significant associations were found between these parameters

Assessment of intermittent UMTS electromagnetic field effects on blood circulation in the human auditory region using a near-infrared system.

The aim of the present study was to assess the potential effects of intermittent Universal Mobile Telecommunications System electromagnetic fields (UMTS-EMF) on blood circulation in the human head (auditory region) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) on two different timescales: short-term (effects occurring within 80 s) and medium-term (effects occurring within 80 s to 30 min). For the first time, we measured potential immediate effects of UMTS-EMF in real-time without any interference during exposure. Three different exposures (sham, 0.18 W/kg, and 1.8 W/kg) were applied in a controlled,

Rapid and reagent-free screening of occult hepatitis B virus infection based on plasma Vis-NIR spectral pattern recognition.

INTRODUCTION: Occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI) is a specific form of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection characterized by testing negative for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) with the presence of HBV DNA in the blood. Due to the complexity and high cost of HBV DNA testing, which is rarely included in routine physical examinations, leading to underdiagnosis of OBI. In this study, plasma visible-near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy pattern recognition was employed to develop the discriminant analysis models for distinguishing between OBI from healthy (normal controls) plasma. METHODS:

Bioengineered nanocellulose-Schiff base sensor for selective fluorometric detection of Cd2+ ions in aqueous media.

Cadmium (Cd2+) is recognized as a highly detrimental, non-essential heavy metal and is classified as a Class I carcinogen, presenting significant hazards to both human health and aquatic ecosystems, even at minimal concentrations. Its prolonged biological half-life and propensity for bioaccumulation necessitate ongoing surveillance in both drinking water and wastewater. Traditional detection methods, including inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), offer high sensitivity but are hindered by factors such as expensive equipment, extensive

Self-calibrated pulse oximetry algorithm based on photon pathlength change and the application in human freedivers.

SIGNIFICANCE: Pulse oximetry estimates the arterial oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (SaO2) based on relative changes in light intensity at the cardiac frequency. Commercial pulse oximeters require empirical calibration on healthy volunteers, resulting in limited accuracy at low oxygen levels. An accurate, self-calibrated method for estimating SaO2 is needed to improve patient monitoring and diagnosis. AIM: Given the challenges of calibration at low SaO2 levels, we pursued the creation of a self-calibrated algorithm that can effectively estimate SaO2 across its full range. Our primary objectiv

Application of non-contact hematocrit prediction technologies to overcome hematocrit effects on immunosuppressant quantification from dried blood spots.

Fully automated dried blood spot (DBS) analysis for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of the immunosuppressants tacrolimus, sirolimus, everolimus and cyclosporin A suffers from a so-called hematocrit (hct) effect. This effect is related to the analysis of a partial DBS punch and extractability differences imposed by blood with different hcts. As this is intrinsic to automated DBS analysis, this poses a serious drawback for accurate immunosuppressant quantification. Knowledge of a sample's hct allows to correct the derived immunosuppressant concentrations for this effect. Unfortunately, when us
