One for All, All for One: A Unified Framework for Free-Energy Calculations.

Enhanced-sampling techniques employed in free-energy calculations overcome the limitations of brute-force molecular dynamics (MD) and are widely used to interrogate complex biological and chemical systems at atomic resolution. Depending on the nature of the problem at hand, different strategies are utilized to estimate the underlying free-energy change. In geometrical transformations, sampling is accelerated along a defined set of collective variables (CVs) to reconstruct the associated free-energy landscape. Conversely, in alchemical transformations, the free-energy difference between the two

The Australian Monstrilloida 3. Caromiobenella Jeon, Lee & Soh, 2018, Monstrilla Dana, 1849, and Sarsimonstrillus n. gen.

This is the third paper in a series regarding a taxonomical survey of the monstrilloid copepods collected during the past three decades in coastal systems of Australia. The first contribution included the taxonomic analysis of three genera of the Monstrilloida, i.e., Monstrillopsis Sars, 1921, Maemonstrilla Grygier & Ohtsuka, 2008, and the monotypic Australomonstrillopsis Suárez-Morales & McKinnon, 2007. The second document contained the taxonomic analysis of Cymbasoma Thompson, 1888 which emphasized the remarkable diversity of this genus in Australia, with a total of 25 new species. In this t

Large-scale importance of bark beetle outbreaks for standing deadwood and woodpeckers.

Resource pulses associated with forest disturbances can significantly influence biological communities, with interacting and sometimes lagged effects on species numbers. Among the most common disturbances in temperate forests are bark beetle outbreaks, which represent a resource pulse and initiate additional resource pulses of other insects and of deadwood. Moreover, bark beetle outbreaks are often followed by changes in habitat conditions due to canopy cover loss or salvage logging that can have contrasting effects on co-occurring forest species. However, the effects of this multi-resource pu

Genetic diversity and geographic distribution of Fasciola species from cattle in eight provinces of South Africa.

Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, is a globally significant parasitic disease affecting livestock and humans. Both species exist in South Africa, however, information on their geographical distribution and genetic diversity is limited. This study investigated the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Fasciola species in South Africa using Pepck, COI and ITS markers. Two hundred and seven Fasciola spp. specimens analysed in this study showed that 74.4% of isolates identified as F. hepatica and 25.6% as F. gigantica based on the Pepck gene. The geogra

The role of deer keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae: Lipoptena and Neolipoptena) in occupational and public health.

Deer keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae: Lipoptena and Neolipoptena) are bloodsucking arthropods that primarily feed on deer (family Cervidae) but can occasionally bite humans. The knowledge of their potential harm to wildlife, livestock, and pets is fragmentary. These ectoparasites have been historically understudied, as they were only considered nuisances to various occupational groups and the public. However, there is also mounting evidence that they may be pathogen vectors as several infectious disease agents, including Acinetobacter, Anaplasma, Bartonella, Borrelia, Coxiella, Francisella, Mycop

A dual role for PGLYRP1 in host defense and immune regulation during B. pertussis infection.

Bordetella pertussis, the etiologic agent of whooping cough, remains a serious public health concern despite widespread vaccination. Improved therapeutics and vaccines are urgently needed to treat and prevent pertussis disease. Host recognition of bacterial peptidoglycan (PGN), including B. pertussis extracellular PGN fragment tracheal cytotoxin (TCT), shapes the immune response to infection. Peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGLYRPs) are a conserved family of innate immune molecules which bind bacterial PGN. While they function as immune signaling receptors in arthropods, PGLYRPs in mammals

Thermal indices for assessing the impact of outdoor thermal environments on human health: a systematic review of epidemiological studies.

The global rise in temperatures contributes to the increase of climate-sensitive diseases. Despite mitigation efforts, temperatures are projected to keep rising, highlighting the need for integrated methods to assess the impact of thermal environments on human health. This study summarizes the existing evidence on the statistical relationships (associations) between thermal indices and health outcomes. Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched until December, 2023 for studies examining the association between thermal indices and health outcomes in outdoor environments (p

IgE to cyclophilins in pollen-allergic children: Epidemiologic, clinical, and diagnostic relevance of a neglected panallergen.

BACKGROUND: Cyclophilins are ubiquitous panallergens whose epidemiologic, diagnostic, and clinical relevance is largely unknown and whose sensitization is rarely examined in routine allergy practice. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the epidemiologic, diagnostic, and clinical relevance of cyclophilins in seasonal allergic rhinitis and its comorbidities. METHODS: We examined a random sample of 253 (25%) of 1263 Italian children with seasonal allergic rhinitis from the Panallergens in Pediatrics (PAN-PED) cohort with characterized disease phenotypes. Nested studies of sensitization prevalence, corre

Demographic-environmental effect on dengue outbreaks in 11 countries.

BACKGROUND: Dengue outbreaks are common in tropical or temperate countries, and climate change can exacerbate the problem by creating conditions conducive to the spread of mosquitoes and prolonging the transmission season. Warmer temperatures can allow mosquitoes to mature faster and increase their ability to spread disease. Additionally, changes in rainfall patterns can create more standing water, providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between environmental and demographic factors and the dissemination of dengue fe

Spatiotemporally Explicit Epidemic Model for West Nile Virus Outbreak in Germany: An Inversely Calibrated Approach.

Since the first autochthonous transmission of West Nile Virus was detected in Germany (WNV) in 2018, it has become endemic in several parts of the country and is continuing to spread due to the attainment of a suitable environment for vector occurrence and pathogen transmission. Increasing temperature associated with a changing climate has been identified as a potential driver of mosquito-borne disease in temperate regions. This scenario justifies the need for the development of a spatially and temporarily explicit model that describes the dynamics of WNV transmission in Germany. In this study

The global risk of infectious disease emergence from giant land snail invasion and pet trade.

BACKGROUND: Pathogen outbreaks mostly originate from animals, but some species are more likely to trigger epidemics. The giant land snail (Lissachatina fulica) is a widespread invader, a popular exotic pet, and a notorious vector of the rat lungworm, causing eosinophilic meningitis in humans. However, a comprehensive assessment of the risks of disease outbreak associated with this species is lacking. METHODS: We assessed and mapped the risk of disease transmission associated with the invasion and pet trade of L. fulica. First, we conducted a review of the scientific literature to list all kno

Bim Expression Promotes the Clearance of Mononuclear Phagocytes during Choroidal Neovascularization, Mitigating Scar Formation in Mice.

Inflammation is increasingly recognized as an important modulator in the pathogenesis of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Although significant progress has been made in delineating the pathways that contribute to the recruitment of inflammatory cells and their contribution to nAMD, we know little about what drives the resolution of these inflammatory responses. Gaining a better understanding of how immune cells are cleared in the choroid will give a novel insight into how sustained inflammation could influence the pathogenesis of nAMD. The pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family member

Safety and tolerance of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei N1115 in caesarean-born young children: a randomised, placebo-controlled trial.

The administration of probiotics may help to improve dysbiosis and related health problems in children delivered by caesarean section. However, the effects are strain specific, and safety combined tolerance are considered a priority. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and tolerance of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei N1115 in caesarean-born children aged 6-24 months via a randomised, placebo-controlled intervention study. In total, 101 children were included and randomised to receive either a sachet of L. paracasei N1115 (2×1010 cfu/g, 2 g/day) or placebo (maltodextrin, 2 g/day) per

Placental Inflammation Leads to Abnormal Embryonic Heart Development.

BACKGROUND: Placental heart development and embryonic heart development occur in parallel, and these organs have been proposed to exert reciprocal regulation during gestation. Poor placentation has been associated with congenital heart disease, an important cause of infant mortality. However, the mechanisms by which altered placental development can lead to congenital heart disease remain unresolved. METHODS: In this study, we use an in vivo neutrophil-driven placental inflammation model through antibody depletion of maternal circulating neutrophils at key stages during time-mated murine preg

Is Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Stricto in South America? First Molecular Evidence of Its Presence in Colombia.

The genus Borrelia encompasses spirochetal species that are part of three well-defined groups. Two of these groups contain pathogens that affect humans: the group causing Lyme disease (LDG) and the relapsing fever group (RFG). Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., which is distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, and relapsing fevers are caused by Borrelia spp., which are found in temperate and tropical countries and are an emerging but neglected pathogens. In some departments of Colombia, there are records of the presence of Borrelia sp. in humans and bats. However, little is kn

OPTN/SRTR 2019 Annual Data Report: Kidney.

Despite the ongoing severe shortage of available kidney grafts relative to candidates in need, data from 2019 reveal some promising trends. After remaining relatively stagnant for many years, the number of kidney transplants has increased each year since 2015, reaching the highest annual count to date of 24,273 in 2019. The number of patients waiting for a kidney transplant in the United States was relatively stable, despite an increase in the number of new candidates added in 2019 and a decrease in patients removed from the waiting list owing to death or deteriorating medical condition. Seasonal patterns of relapse and disability in Danish MS patients: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The importance of environmental risk factors in the onset of multiple sclerosis (MS) has been studied extensively. Similarly, a growing number of studies address the importance of environmental factors, including seasonality, for ongoing activity of established disease. Specifically, past research demonstrates higher rates of relapse activity in summer months among individuals with MS. Our study adds to the existing literature on seasonality of disease relapse by analysing a large population-based and virtually complete cohort of patient with relapsing and remitting MS (RRMS) in an

The Torpid State: Recent Advances in Metabolic Adaptations and Protective Mechanisms†.

Torpor and hibernation are powerful strategies enabling animals to survive periods of low resource availability. The state of torpor results from an active and drastic reduction of an individual's metabolic rate (MR) associated with a relatively pronounced decrease in body temperature. To date, several forms of torpor have been described in all three mammalian subclasses, i.e., monotremes, marsupials, and placentals, as well as in a few avian orders. This review highlights some of the characteristics, from the whole organism down to cellular and molecular aspects, associated with the torpor ph

Impact of sleep-disordered breathing on behavior and quality of life in children aged 2 to 7 years with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate.

INTRODUCTION: Children with cleft are at high risk for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). However, little is known about the impact of SDB in this pediatric population. The aim of this study was to investigate whether SDB play a role in behavior and quality of life (QoL) in young children with cleft. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 95 children aged 2.0-7.9 years with cleft palate. Parents completed a sleep (Pediatric Sleep questionnaire), a behavior (Conners' Early Childhood scale), and a generic health-related QoL (KINDL questionnaire) assessment. Symptomatic children were referred for a po
