Children with small chests.

The volume of the thoracic cage may be severely restricted by faulty rib growth due to a variety of bone diseases. At one extreme the thorax may be too small to permit adequate lung expansion after birth; at the other, the abnormality may only be recognized by examination of an x-ray. However, in a small group of infants the deformity, though not obvious clinically, may be severe enough to cause fatal respiratory failure in the first few months of life. It is possible that some of these infants may be saved by surgical enlargement of the thoracic cage.

Aggrecan governs intervertebral discs development by providing critical mechanical cues of the extracellular matrix.

Aggrecan (ACAN) is localized in the intervertebral disc (IVD) in unique compartment-specific patterns where it contributes to the tissue str … ant mice are perinatally lethal and characterized by short snout, cleft palate and disproportionate dwarfism. Whole-mount skeletal staining and µ-CT analysis of Acan iE5/iE5 mice at embryonic day 18.5 revealed compressed vertebral bodies with accelerated mineralization compared to wild type controls. In Acan iE5/iE5 mice, histochemical staining revealed co …

Genomic diversity and signatures of selection in meat and fancy rabbit breeds based on high-density marker data.

BACKGROUND: Domestication of the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) has led to a multi-purpose species that includes many breeds and lines with … igmentation-related traits (EDNRA, EDNRB, MITF and OCA2) and body size, with a strong candidate for dwarfism in rabbit (COL2A1). CONCLUSIONS: We report a genome-wide view of genetic loci that underlie the main phenotypic differences in the analyzed rabbit breeds, which can be useful to understand the shift from the domestication process to the development …

Identification of novel loci associated with maturity and yield traits in early maturity soybean plant introduction lines.

BACKGROUND: To continue to meet the increasing demands of soybean worldwide, it is crucial to identify key genes regulating flowering and ma … psis flowering genes, while loci affecting yield and 100 seed weight contained genes known to cause dwarfism. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated substantial variation in soybean agronomic traits of interest, including maturity and flowering dates as well as yield, and the utility of GWA analyses in identifying novel genetic factors underlying important …

Molecular Characterization of the Chicken Parvovirus Based on VP1 Gene Circulating in Brazilian Chicken Flocks.

Parvovirus infection affects several animal species, especially young animals. In birds, parvovirus infection has been described in Muscovy ducks, turkeys, and chickens, all of which had enteric diseases characterized by diarrhea. Chicken parvovirus (ChPV) has been detected in poultry around the world in animals affected by enteric problems, showing dwarfism, cloacal pasting, and diarrhea. In Brazil, ChPV was detected in chickens affected by diarrhea fifteen years ago. However, the genetic characteristics of ChPV circulating in chicken flocks were not determined. Therefore, the aim of the pres…

Osteopetrosis-like disorders induced by osteoblast-specific retinoic acid signaling inhibition in mice.

Osteopetrosis is an inherited metabolic disease, characterized by increased bone density and narrow marrow cavity. Patients with severe oste … use model and surprisingly found it mimicked the symptoms of osteopetrosis found in clinical cases: dwarfism, increased imperfectly-formed trabecular bone deposition with a reduced marrow cavity, thin cortical bone with a brittle skeleton, and hematopoietic and immune dysfunction. Micro-CT, the three-point bending test, and histological analysis drew a lan …

Risk of ventriculoperitoneal shunt malfunction in operatively treated early onset spinal deformity.

PURPOSE: Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement is a common neurosurgical procedure performed in patients with early onset scoliosis (EOS … ructural defects or obstructions, 2 intraventricular hemorrhage, 1 cerebral palsy, and 1 campomelic dwarfism. During the first 2 years following rib-based insertion, there was a mean of 2.5 expansion/revision procedures (0-5) with no shunt-related complications. The mean length of follow-up in this series was 7.0 years (2.6-13.2). A total of three (16%) pa …

Runt-related transcription factor-2 (Runx2) is required for bone matrix protein gene expression in committed osteoblasts in mice.

Runt-related transcription factor-2 (Runx2) is an essential transcription factor for osteoblast differentiation. However, its functions after the commitment into osteoblasts are controversial and remain to be clarified. We generated enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP)-Cre transgenic mice driven by the 2.3-kilobase (kb) Col1a1 promoter, and Runx2 was deleted in osteoblasts and odontoblasts in Runx2fl/flCre mice. The sutures and fontanelles were more widely opened in Runx2fl/flCre newborns than in Runx2fl/fl newborns. Runx2fl/flCre mice exhibited dwarfism with shorter incisors and 37% had …

Lack of Vacuolar H+ -Pyrophosphatase and Cytosolic Pyrophosphatases Causes Fatal Developmental Defects in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The cytosolic level of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) is finely regulated, with PPi hydrolyzed primarily by the vacuolar H+-pyrophosphatase ( … pa2 and fugu5 ppa1 ppa4 had nearly lethal embryonic phenotypes, with the survivors showing striking dwarfism and abnormal morphology. Moreover, fugu5 ppa1+/- ppa4 showed severe atrophy at the leaf margins. The other triple mutants, fugu5 ppa1 ppa5 and fugu5 ppa2 ppa4, exhibited death of root hairs and were nearly sterile due to deformed pistils, respective …

Minor intron splicing revisited: identification of new minor intron-containing genes and tissue-dependent retention and alternative splicing of minor introns.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in minor spliceosome components such as U12 snRNA (cerebellar ataxia) and U4atac snRNA (microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type 1 (MOPD1)) result in tissue-specific symptoms. Given that the minor spliceosome is ubiquitously expressed, we hypothesized that these restricted phenotypes might be caused by the tissue-specific regulation of the minor spliceosome targets, i.e. minor intron-containing genes (MIGs). The current model of inefficient splicing is thought to apply to the regulation of the ~ 500 MIGs identified in the U12DB. However this database was cre…

Morphological, transcriptomics and phytohormone analysis shed light on the development of a novel dwarf mutant of cabbage (Brassica oleracea).

Plant dwarf mutants generally exhibit delayed growth, delayed development, short internodes, and abnormal leaves and flowers and are ideal materials to explore the molecular mechanism of plant growth and development. In the current study, we first discovered a spontaneous cabbage (Brassica oleracea) dwarf mutant 99-198dw, which exhibits a dwarf stature, wrinkled leaves, non-heading, and substantially reduced self-fertility compared with the wild-type 99-198; however, the underlying molecular mechanism of its dwarfism is unknown. Here, we performed comparative phenotype, transcriptome and phyto…
