In the ten-year period from 1978 through 1987, 261 patients with intussusception were admitted to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The diagnosis was established by barium enema or at laparotomy. The patients were divided into two groups; there were 228 children ranging in age from 1 month to 14 years, and 33 adults. Among the children, 134 (59%) were male and 94 (41%) were female, a ratio of 1.4:1. There was no clear seasonal incidence. INTRODUCTION: Congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract are a significant cause of morbidity in children and less frequently in adults. In rare cases, they may run undetected during childhood and may present during adolescence. The detectability of ectopic gastric mucosa by Technetium (Tc)-99m pertechnetate abdominal scanning was investigated by reviewing 62 such scans in 52 pediatric patients with gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The histologic diagnoses and clinical conditions were correlated to the findings of the scans. There were 21 true-positives, 35 true-negatives, one false-positive and five false-negative studies. The overall sensitivity of this scan for the detection of ectopic gastric mucosa was 81%, the specificity was 97% and the accuracy was 90%.

Thirteen children aged 2 to 16 years have had a subtotal resection of small bowel, following a mid-gut volvulus in 10 cases.
